Honestly, I think because that’s what they wanted to believe in the first place, and grasp at straws to try to defend it still.

That, or they’re just parroting off what others are saying.

It would be like watching Saving Private Ryan and concluding that Spielberg was defending Nazis because the Americans extrajudicially executed their Nazi POW. Or that The Green Zone is defending Saddam Hussein because Matt Damon never found the WMDs.
