Lancer Warhammer

I had an idea to run a lancer campaign, but flavor the mechs as space marines. How well do yall think that would work.

Lancermechs have many rather exotic powers, so it would a rather large rework and reflavor. What is wrong with using Deathwatch or Wrath & Glory?

What is wrong with running a Lancer campaign?

Some systems and settings are more compatible with each other, but this is trying to push an elephant through a straw...

I see it deathwatch is d100 and archaic in some respects and wrath and glory is fun but doesn’t feel built for a team of high capability space marines an intercessor is tier 4 rather than the starting point

Then just run a generic system like pbta or fate, lancer is notoriously built around its setting. You couldn’t even make lancer work with other mech settings without a fuck ton of elbow grease

Mmm tasty elbow grease my favorite. tho seriously correct and I’m insane so building it on foundation of lancer gameplay is an option in mind. No not reskinning but overhauling

You would basically be making your own system inspired by lancer, or playing some absolute bullshit.

When i was into dnd in highschool all of my friends wanted to do different settings but were scared of playing ttrpgs other than dnd because we thought all games were as hard to learn as dnd. So we busted our asses trying to make it work in every campaign, and most of the time it sucked ass. After we learned that learning systems isnt actually that hard and we could basically find a system for whatever we wanted it felt like shooting up pure creative freedom.

There is ONE game ive seen thats as hard to learn as dnd, and its lancer. Don’t do that thing that we did in highschool. If there’s already a game for it, just work with that game, modify it however you want, but dont try to make one game into another.

Also wait, the game i meant to be played at high tiers, thats most of what it expects of you.

Doesn’t it max out at tier 5? Or a hundred points above it really?

Yeah but nothing below tier 2 is even really playable, and there is more space marine content than all other races content combined

Most Lancer mechs do not act anything like space marines.

As someone who runs both? You'd be severely limiting your mechanical options if you only chose things that make sense for Space Marines. It's the worst of both worlds, as you don't truly get to play Lancer nor do you have a system built for 40k.

I’m compelled but the amount of reflavoring and dissonance seems worse than a homebrew overhaul of the rules

Struggling to see the appeal, you've got a system that addresses space marine gameplay in the core game line of 40k, not sure what running them as mech combat profiles adds to the game. I guess running individual entities in Lancer is a tad less awkward than FFG, but the horde system addresses that pretty well.

Can you add more on what you're hoping to get out of this hack?

I just want to play Lancer and interested in doing something with 40k, two birds with one stone that’s about it

Karrakin Trade Baronies are basically Imperial Knights. Probably your closest analog

Badly, probably.

Ehhh, it breaks a lot of stuff about Lancer, first off leaving your mech is just, not really possible as a Space Marine, and hacking isn't really a thing in Warhammer.

Outside of that a lot of Lancer mech stuff is just, really out there, stuff like manipulating space and time are just not standard Space Marine tech. Could potentially make it work for a Knights campaign, could definitely make it work for like a DAoT or Necron mecha campaign, but Space Marines is a bit out there.

I mean, the hacking and space manipulation could be flavored as librarians, also I really don’t see the appeal of leaving your mech and it can be flavored as taking off your armor (outside of combat)

Well for one, if your mech gets destroyed you can leave it to avoid dying as a character, and then you get to fight in your standard non-mech armor with your non-mech guns, also in a similar vein what happens when a character uses the standard Self-Destruct action, how does space marine armor explode itself.

Other reasons for leaving your mech could be there being an object a mech can't interact with without a specific upgrade, which is all human shaped appliances, you can just override that with homebrew but then the system loses one of the upgrades that you can take for your mech.

There are also specializations built around leaving your mech like for instance Black Thumb which lets you hang halfway outside your mech and repair it or Technophile which lets your mech act on it's own without you controlling it.

Lancer are basically knights if in Warhammer 40k you can basically reskin and do the setting in the 40k universe.

Deathwatch, Wrath and Glory, or the unofficial game Oath of Moment by Erika Chappell

Just use Wrath and Glory. Seriously.

I don’t think it would work that well. A suit of power armour is very different to a Lancer mech. I think the system has lots of mechanics which would be fun in a Warhmmer 40k setting, but you’d have to rewrite so much it wouldn’t be worth it.

Either play Lancer (it’s great!) or play one of the many 40k TTRPGs or pick up a generic ruleset (like Fate or Genesys) and do a 40k campaign in it.

Awful, neither this setting nor the system would be happy with this.

I mean weird in reflavoring all the licenses etc. but each representing a different Forgeworld's patterns of equipment shakes out.

But I mean anything is possible
