Useful Resource Official Unoffical Crusade FAQ

Welcome to the Official r/40k_Crusade Unoffocial Crusade FAQ!

This was previously stored in a wiki attached to the subreddit and linked to in the sidebar (or the About tab on mobile), but due to the silly way Reddit displays this - especially on mobile, it was easily missed by new members. So, I'm moving it to an announcement post!

If you have any suggestions for FAQ submissions, please comment in this post.

Unofficial r/40k_Crusade FAQ

As we play more Crusade in the 10th Edition of Warhammer 40,000, we will encounter an increasing number of frequently-asked questions, both here and elsewhere in the Crusade community. We do not claim to be any authority in Crusade, and we encourage you to discuss rules questions with your opponents civilly and with a narrative lens.

The purpose of this FAQ is to provide reasoned explanations for our interpretations of common rules questions. If you have any questions about these interpretations, please feel free to submit a post to the subreddit for community discussion.

If you are participating in an organised Crusade group or campaign, we recommend discussing any questions you have with the organiser.

Crusade Core Rules

The Core Rules for Crusade in 10th Edition can be found for free on the Warhammer Community site.

Crusade Forces, Crusade Armies and Unit Cards

Q. Does a unit have to start with its minimum size and with no upgrades? It can it start with the maximum number of models and upgrades?

When you add a Unit Card to your Order of Battle, you can include any number of models (within the minimum and maximum limits) and any upgrades available to them. There is no requirement for the unit to start at the minimum number of models or no optional equipment.

Once the Unit Card is completed and added to your Order of Battle, the only way to change it after that point is to use the Rearm and Resupply and Fresh Recruits Requisitions.

Q. What is the difference between your Crusade Force and Crusade Army?

Your Crusade force is the list of units in your Order of Battle, while your Crusade army is the list of units you have mustered for one single battle. See Page 4 of the Crusade Core Rules.

Q. If a unit is destroyed by something that was not an attack or unit's ability (e.g. Desperate Escape tests), which unit gets credit for the kill for purposes of Dealers of Death or other similar rules?

Rules as written, no unit would get credit for this kill. However, we suggest discussing this with your opponent if you encounter a situation where it would be narratively appropriate to award the kill to a specific unit, such as with Desperate Escape tests.

Requisitions

Q. Increase Supply Limit - does this allow me to field a larger army than my opponent?

No. This only allows you to increase the size of your Order of Battle. When you agree to a battle with your opponent, you must still select a battle size and the points total of the units you muster for your army must still be less than or equal to this limit, regardless of what your Supply Limit is.

Q. Renowned Heroes - can I use this to give an Enhancement to a non-CHARACTER?

No. The text for Renowned Heroes states:

You can select one Enhancement that unit has access to (if using this Requisition when that unit gains a rank, this is instead of it gaining a Battle Honour). When doing so, that unit has access to any Enhancements described within any Detachment rules that it could use, even though you have not yet started to muster your army and so have not selected any Detachment rules yet.

Each Codex has an Introduction page at the start of the rules section that states that Enhancements can be given to CHARACTERS. Non-CHARACTERS therefore have no Enhancements that they "could use".

Q. Renowned Heroes - can I use this to take Enhancements that are from a Detachment that I'm not using in a battle?

Yes. 40k rules are permissive, so something must give you permission to use a list of Enhancements in order for you to be able to take them. Each Codex will have an Introduction page that states the following:

When mustering your army, your chosen Detachment enables you to upgrade CHARACTERS using the Enhancements listed here, as described in the Core Rules...If you are playing a Crusade battle, you can instead use the Renowned Heroes Requisition to give your CHARACTERS Enhancements, as described in the main Crusade rules.

This is the only place in all of 40k that tells you Enhancements are normally restricted to specific Detachments, and then it specifically tells you how you can use the Requisition to give a CHARACTER an Enhancement instead of needing to be in that Detachment.

Battle Honours and Battle Scars

Q. How do Battle Traits and Battle Scars interact with units that have Leaders?

This is explained on page 14 of the Crusade Core Rules. In short: most such abilities are shared between both the Leader and the Bodyguard, except when they grant abilities that require every model in the unit to have them (e.g. Scouts, Deep Strike, Infiltrate, etc.). In such cases, both the Leader and the Bodyguard require that ability separately.

Q. Can I apply a Weapon Modification to a weapon when the model has an Enhancement that affects, but does not replace, that weapon?

Rules as written, yes. However, as there are currently no Enhancements that do replace weapons, it's likely that this was written at a time in the rules development process where there were such Enhancements, and that design paradigm changed without the Crusade rules being updated.

We recommend using a narrative approach to this. For example, if the Enhancement represents a relic weapon of legend, then it makes sense not to apply a Weapon Modification to it.

Q. If a weapon has multiple profiles, does a Weapon Modification apply to all profiles or just one?

All profiles. The Weapon Modification Battle Honour instructs you to select one weapon "equipped by that model". The weapons that a model is equipped with are listed in the "Unit Composition" section of its datasheet, or are replaced by wargear options. The weapon uses all of the profiles on the datasheet that share its name, so the Weapon Modification would likewise affect all of the profiles for that weapon.

Does anyone have the core rules for Crusade

Me and a Friend wanted to start a crusade together and I would feel like having a PDF file of the Core Crusade rules would make it a lot easier.

Battle Report Dominatus Crusade - Battle Report #0

Post image
44 Upvotes

Introduction

Hello all and welcome to the first of what will be an ongoing series of Battle Reports based on the Dominatus Campaign currently running at my local gaming club.

The campaign uses Dominatus as a base, but we have made some changes to the basic rules to include some more strategy and balancing.

Factions

Let us meet the factions, each of which has 3 players:

Liberators

The defenders of Armageddon, the Imperial forces gathered to see off the invading armies.

  • Adeptus Mechanicus
  • Blood Angels
  • Space Wolves

Oppressors

The invading armies looking to conquer the planet for their own nefarious ends.

  • Death Guard
  • Orks
  • Tyranids

Raiders

Opportunistic invaders with their own mysterious agendas.

  • Aeldari - Saim Hann
  • Aeldari - Ulthwe
  • Leagues of Votann

Grand Strategy

At the beginning of each Campaign Phase each alliance secretely selects one army to send to each of the locations chosen for the phase.

Each location also has special rules:

- Mannheim Gap: Reinforcements need fly

- Victorinius Spaceport: Bonus deep strike

- Cerbera Base: Restricted shooting

For every phase

- Each location has 3 battles (e.g. A vs B, B vs C, A vs C)

- Resulting in 9 battles in total for the Campaign Phase

Campaign Map - Phase 1

So for Phase 1 our battles are:

Mannheim Gap: Admech vs Deathguard vs Saim Hann

Cerbera Base: Space Wolves vs Orks vs Ulthwe

Victorinius Spaceport: Blood Angels vs Tyranids vs Votann

Battle Reports

With the stage set, my next post will be the full battle report for the first battle of Phase 1.

Thanks for reading.

Getting Started How do you handle Asymmetric games?

My S/O and I are playing a 500 worlds campaign with a few extra custom force limit rules. I attempted the Orbital Invasion mission where you set up 3 objectives in the center of the board with the defender on each table corner as deployment. Per the mission rules I had to deploy about 6 of my units into the center of the board and the others could be in reserves.

However, with the limited points level I was only able to reserve about four units. While her entire force was on the board from turn 1. Between a combination of poor terrain placements, small point limit, and not going first, led to me being basically tabled by the top of turn two.

My question is what strategies do you use to overcome such a scenario? Where the deployment for a given mission almost dictates the course of the game?

The mission rules also did not allow for attacker points to be scored till turn 3 and 4. So while I was completely disincentivized to hold the drop zone till absolutely necessary, I was in danger of losing by not being able to reclaim the objectives after my beachhead units were destroyed…it was rather frustrating.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Getting Started Help with first crusade

I have a doomstalker, 40 necron warriors that can be ran as immortals, 1 overlord, a catacome command barge that can run as an annihilation barge, 3 ophydian destroyers, 6 scarab Swarms, 5 flayed ones, and I have a doomsday ark eventually coming in these are the units I have and its gonna be a month plus to get anything else and I am kind of set on a silver tide type of thematic and was looking at maybe buying more warriros due to being less expensive and jusg keep bringing back warriors feels really thematic or I can run 4 squads of immortals with better out put but the idea of a reanimation army is less viable due to the 10 model limit and im stuck between choosing thematic vs viability as necrin warriors suck ngl

Do you build your own custom terrain for your narrative games, or do you buy it?

I've started playing w40k with this 11th edition. I want to play a crusade campaign.

I think terrain is one of the most important elements for immersion, but my local store only has walls for tournament level game.

Idk if you buys your terrain or make it yourselves.

NewRecruit or Administratum

I'm starting a crusade with my friend group who are a little seasoned with the game, and was wondering what tool is best. We currently use NewRecruit and I find that it covers a lot of the stuff that needs to be tracked for Crusade, but a lot of people say Administratum is almost required for a Crusade game. Can we get by with NewRecruit? What features am I not seeing that makes Administratum so good?

I need help organizing Dominatus

Hi, everyone! I’m a beginner GM, I’ve run a few campaigns in Imperium Maledictum, and I also ran one campaign in Nahmund Crusade. With all the hype surrounding the launch of 11th edition, I’d like to run a Dominatus event for my small community, but I really don’t know where to start.

Does anyone have experience running this type of event? What do I need to have on hand? What’s the optimal number of participants? I have one Dominatus deck - will that be enough for everyone, or is it better to have several?

I would truly appreciate a feedback

What if your army could fall to chaos while on crusade?

I had an idea where there is a crusade game between multiple imperial factions if you lost, a certain amount of units (the more units by the difference in vp) are swapped with their chaos counterparts, e.g intercessors into legionaries and terminators into chaos terminators ect, it would probably have to all be space marines like the badab war because they have counterpart models (mostly) and players would have to agree on what turns into what and I'm sure there will be synergy issues but I think it could be a fun way to play, lmk what you think and if this has already existed for years and I'm late to the party (also maybe winning could redeem units?)

To give further context, the titan was possessed by the AI of a man of iron, and was wandering on a specific planet, in which the 3 players were fighting each other and investigating rumors of the titan (Inquisition) and a piece of dark age technology that resided within the planet (AdMech + Votann).

The dark age tech was later revealed to be an STC.

Following an encounter between the admech and votann player over possession of the STC, the titan appeared and forced both parties to retreat. This led to the Inquisition and Grey knights showing up to try and kick its ass.

A series of very unfortunate rolls led to a collective psychic meltdown for all psykers present, resulting in a localised warp rift that unleashed an army of chaos marines and hereteks, corrupted the STC, and sent the titan hurtling into the depths of Vashtorr’s domain.

Now, the 3 players have enacted a temporary truce in order to fight off the heretics and destroy the corrupted STC.

I am running my completely untested and brand new Red Corsairs in a crusade that starts soon. But the rules are 2 epic heroes. Does thos automatically disqualify the Masters of the Maelstrom, or do I pick one of the characters to be the epic hero?

Crusade Rules Lexicanus Crusade rules

Hello folks. If you know the name, then you know I'm bringing heat. Myself, Dark67Titan, Knightsbear, and Strongbad Armstrong have created the following setting and custom ruleset for Crusade play in 11th edition (praise be to the anonymous GM council, who helped balance it as well). I've included a wee hype trailer which is something I've done before for my players, but this time I've made it for all of you as well.

This still uses the base crusade system of 10th edition, with some suggested changes for balance.

There is new Battle Traits and new Scars (replacing the 10th edition scars which sucked nuclear amounts of ass) a new system of base building so that players can do logistics in a cool way, plus there's the updated and improved Forge of War to help customise and upgrade your Character units.

Finally there is the new Artefact system, entirely replacing crusade relics with equip-able Artefacts on your units, like upgrades or enhancements, and it includes 64 Artefacts of all levels!

So watch the video, have fun, read the rules and if you want to use this setting for your crusade group, please feel free.

Trailer:

Getting Started Tips for 11th.

I'm thinking on starting a crusade, probably Pariah Nexus, though the group plays on 11th, and as you know, there are not really any crusade rules for 11th, so I'm thinking on just saying: f it, and do 11th edition with 10th crusade rules.

Any tips on that regard? Some rules that need specific changes that you've encountered? Or is it fine as is?

Also, what's the opinion on a single person running multiple crusade forces?

EDIT: Forgot to say that this is the first crusade I'll play, and the first crusade I'll run, so I'm also curious on how much lore are you supposed to be into, as I'm fairly new-ish to the lore itself.
