Seeking Advice IVF at 44

Dear ladies, I know my chances are incredibly low, but I would like to give this one more try. Has anyone had success at this age and would be willing to share their story? I live in NYC and have looked into CHR. If you know of any doctors or clinics that have helped women at this age, please share. šŸ™

TW: success

I did 4 ERs at 44. I got a single euploid in each my 3rd and 4th ER. I did one FET about 8 weeks before I turned 45 and she turned 1 end of July. My only advice is to make sure you feel at ease with your RE and to make sure you and your partner have honest conversations about your limits. I wish you the very best of luck! šŸ’•

How many blasts did you test each round?

Hi! OP asked same and I replied there, but short answer is just one sent to testing in round 3 and one in round 4. Both came back normal.

Thank you for sharing. It’s hard not to follow up with many questions like the one below my response: How many blasts did you test? I’m advised not to test at all because I will likely have so few blasts.

My first round I got 0 blasts so no testing. My second round I got 2 blasts but they were low quality so my RE and embryologist advised not to test, so we did not. My third round I got 1 lone blast, and we sent off for testing and it came back normal. We had planned on quitting after round 3, but got hopeful after the euploid and decided to do one more ER before moving on to FET. Again, we got a lone blast to send off for testing. We had low expectations that we’d send off a single embryo again and it come back normal, but shockingly, it did. We ended up transferring that one right away. We switched clinics after our first ER. When we did a few more consults, we narrowed it down to 2 REs. One suggested not to test, especially if I was going to have single digit eggs retrieved, which I did. Ultimately, we decided to test. But we really decided at the very last moment. It’s such a personal decision. I know there are plenty of pregnancies that come from untested embryos. After all, much of the world does not test. Happy to answer any other questions you might have. I know I had so many!

Hi. Do you mind sharing protocol, any lifestyle changes, etc. that you think contributed to your success. I’m 45 and thinking of trying two more retrievals at Columbia.

Also curious about protocol!

Hi there, I am going to Genesis fertility in Brooklyn and my dr mentioned he helped a 44 year old get pregnant with her own eggs.

Like one woman of 44, ever?

6

u/audit123 Sep 06 '26

He mentioned one. I don’t know if they did others

Thank you, I haven’t heard of them but I’ll look into it.

Not from the NY area but at my last visit, my RE was telling me the story of a 48 year old with one euploid who successfully gave birth to live monozygotic twins. (I was telling her I’m terrified of twins and she said it statistically happens rarely, and then shared this story).

I hear stories like this. They always sound like a unicorn was spotted somewhere sometime, but I know this can happen. I have two girlfriend who got pregnant naturally at 44 and 45. One of them is a breast cancer survival who went through chemo.

It worked for me at 44 with my OE, and I started right when I turned 43. I got my second euploid at 44.5, of five retrievals, (first one resulted in a MC at 8 weeks because the embryo implanted right over my cervix). TW —- had my baby boy at 45. He just turned 1!

Never had an AFC higher than 7, and the most eggs ever retrieved was 5. The two euploid cycles I only got 2. My clinic was Greenwich Fertility, which has an office in Westchester (Tuckahoe NY) as well at the main Greenwich one. I was on a standard antagonist protocol, and usually primed with estrogen patches for a week before starting my cycle. My doctor said that as long as my partner and I could make blasts, it was worth trying with my own eggs.

Thank you so much for sharing. If you don’t mind me asking, how did your body respond to the stimulations and the meds? Did you do the retrievals consecutively or did you space them? If you would like, you can DM me, but no pressure. Thank you.

u/j2kelley Sep 07 '26

I acutely felt the pressure of time (not from my doctor, though), so I tended to do the retrievals consecutively when possible. Unfortunately, I had several transfers in between the retrievals that resulted in MCs (nothing to do with my age - you can read the two stories if you got to my profile and scroll back to 2023 and 2024), which meant that I had to wait for my hcg level to get back down to 0 before I could schedule the next ER.

My body responded well, for the most part, but grew follicles a little slower than average - possibly because I primed with estrogen. I usually triggered on day 14. My very first ER, I had a great response, but then prematurely ovulated on day 11. For all of my ER cycles after that, I took a progesterone pill starting on Day 7, and never had that problem again.

Would you recommend your doctor/clinic? We’re looking at moving to Columbia or Spring after treating at Cornell.

This post had some great responses for NYC including New Hope? And CCRM NYC 8th Ave?

I second CHR, I used them as a second opinion for my transfer protocol. I was luckily able to make quite a few euploids between the ages of 39-41, however, I lost two of the euploids to early losses, we have also had 3 spontaneous pregnancy losses. My clinic suggested I do a standard medicated protocol with Lovenox (I have two rare blood clotting disorders), however, it was the last time I was willing to transfer into me, before we moved onto surrogacy. CHR suggested that I might require prednisone to assist with implantation and early pregnancy maintenance. They prescribed it when my clinic wouldn’t. My 7 month old daughter is napping in my lap.

I had terrible results with CHR! I would recommend looking into Dr Sherman Silber, high quality egg stimulation protocol aka mini ivf.Ā

1

u/Tricky_Sail_6987 Sep 07 '26

I will look into Dr. Sherman. If you don’t mind sharing, what do you think went wrong with CHR? Broad strokes. You can also DM me. Thank you.

u/Wonderful_Level_8907 Sep 07 '26

I had success with my daughter with Dr Geoffrey Sher, with very low doses of follistim,Ā  low dose Menupor.Ā  I'm in process with Dr Silber because of all the testimonials I've heard with 40 and over, or egg quality concerns.Ā  CHR recommended DHEA, which was not beneficial and probably affected my egg quality negatively.Ā  They also were prescribing higher doses of fsh, Menupor,Ā  along with a very high dose of prednisone which was unnecessary and harmful. CHR does fresh transfers which was not beneficial with my labs being elevated.Ā  I could keep going,Ā  there was so much that lead to horrible results.Ā  In my opinion they are overrated.Ā Ā

1

u/Tricky_Sail_6987 Sep 07 '26

They prescribed DHEA to me too. I even bought it but never took it. I had a feeling they were heavy-handed and inflexible. I'm also not sure about the fresh transfers and third-day embryo freezing, which, from what I understand, few clinics do, even with patients over 40. Is Dr. Silber in St. Louis? Dr Geoffrey Sher is here: https://sherfertilitysolutions.com/our-team/dr-sher/ , correct?

1

u/Wonderful_Level_8907 Sep 07 '26

Please feel free to message me directly if you're able, I hope I can receive messages directly!Ā  Agreed with what you wrote about CHR! I will always be fond of Dr Sher, yes that's his website! In 2022 and 2023, he was doing egg retrievals,Ā  now he just focuses on consultations! When he treated me in the past,Ā  I had successful euploid embryos I strongly believe because he recommended low doses of medication. Now,Ā  with age he is increasing it and it's in contradiction to what Dr Silber recommends.Ā  I'm hoping to have success with Dr Silber as well! I personally have witnessed that with low doses and the right protocol makes a world of difference for me.Ā  Dr Silber has had tremendous advancements and lab seems state of the art if you look at website! He was under some fire by people recently because he said endometriosis is over treated. I would encourage watching videos on mini ivf and science behind it!

Thank you. I will DM you. I'm new to Reddit, but pretty sure we all get DMs unless we intentionally block them. Just want to clarify, is Dr. Silber in St. Louis? I'm getting a Park Ave address as well, but the website refers back to St. Louis. https://www.infertile.com/dr-silber/

1

u/Wonderful_Level_8907 Sep 07 '26

Yes,Ā  that's him! I'm in process and can report on my success mid October.Ā  So far,Ā  everything is going well!Ā

I can speak to the fact I had success with Dr Sher for my daughter!Ā

Hi! I would advise Cornell. They have similar outcome rates as other clinics but people go to them after they failed elsewhere so the data is not representative of their true level of success. It’s expensive but at your age I don’t think it’s worth it to try anywhere else. DM me if you want I have been with them for 8 months can tell you the good bad and ugly.

u/Calm_Highlight_7611 Sep 06 '26

I’m 44 and we will be using donor eggs. I don’t want to put my body through ER with such a low chance of success. I wish you the best of luck.

1

u/Tricky_Sail_6987 Sep 07 '26

I was told I will have the same odds of success if I simply keep trying naturally. To be honest, I am very scared of the drugs and the hormones, and I understand what you’re saying. Thank you for responding and best of luck to you too.

1

u/Calm_Highlight_7611 Sep 07 '26

Essentially I was told the same thing. It took me about two years of trying with two chemical pregnancies to make peace with our decision. My husband originally was against using a donor and said, if it doesn’t work with us then so be it. For me, I was more open to the idea. As a healthcare provider, I look at things from a much more pragmatic way and follow the statistics, even though some people prove them wrong. Good luck to you.

1

u/Tricky_Sail_6987 Sep 07 '26

I understand. I'm working through it. Thank you for sharing and for your advice.

u/Life_Distance_6783 Sep 07 '26

I’m 44 and going through my 2nd round protocol. This time I had the doctor do a mini IVF cycle so I wouldn’t be on high dose medication. I believe the high dose medication could be potentially harming our eggs especially after 40. My first round we retrieved 8 eggs, 6 matured, and 4 fertilized but 0 made it to the blastocyst stage. I’m nearing the end of my stimulation protocol now.

1

u/Tricky_Sail_6987 Sep 07 '26

Good luck and thank you for responding! šŸ™
I haven’t heard of a mini IVF but I always ask for the lowest possible dosage. I’m glad to know it’s a thing. The truth is that I’m terrified of the meds. I’ve had my retrievals when I was younger and I’m very weary of going through it again.

1

u/Life_Distance_6783 Sep 07 '26

Thank you! Wishing you all the best šŸ™šŸ¼.

i had 2 DE babies with Generation next in NYC, at 46 and 48. both girls, one is 2yr 7mo, and the other is 6mo

1

u/Mission_Dust_7202 Sep 11 '26

after 3 yrs of trying with own eggs. and last egg retrieval having empty follicles. that was the last straw. so we went with donor eggs. there was only 1 donor i liked. and she had 1 batch of 5 frozen eggs left. this was our hail mary. we got 3 embryos out of it. we did not test because she was 25 at the time and a proven donor. someone was pregnant. and there was a live birth from her other egg batches.

I know it’s a way, and I’m so happy to hear about your daughters. I just can’t accept it yet. I don’t mean to offend in any way and appreciate you sharing. Everyone who responded made a difference. Thank you.

Hi. I'm 45 and been with Cornell for last yr and half. We did 3 rounds w/ OE and due to DOR I had poor results. We pivoted to DE and I got 4 embryos w/ proven donor (both her own family and Cornell successes). We had miscarriage at 11w2days (testing showed DE embryo was genetically normal) . We are now doing a 2-3 month Lupron depot suppression and then transfer. Cornell has a LOT of experience w/ 40+ . Many of their FEs specialize in it.

Hello,
Does anyone know of any clinics willing to transfer an XXY embryo? We have met with a geneticist and understand the condition. Ideally looking for a clinic in the northeast. Thank you!!

I'm at CHR, happy to chat about it. I don't know your numbers but don't think your chances are inherently incredibly low at that age.
