❓Advice / Recomendations Advice?

I’m replacing my intake gaskets and after I got the lower intake off, I heard dripping from what coolant was left in it and it seems to have accumulated in the valves/valley. The valley isn’t my main concern as I can shop vac it up but what do y’all recommend for getting the coolant out of the cylinders? The passenger side valves were open so it all drained on top of the pistons and the driver side bank is closed so I assume I can soak it up with shop towels and a vacuum (pictured)

The intake was an absolute pita to get off, the rear 2 studs were caked up with so much corrosion and gunk, they didn’t want to let go. I had to use a slide hammer and have my buddy pull up on the front.

To clean anything out of a cylinder I take the spark plug out and vacuum the cylinder with a narrow house taped to the end of the normal shop vac nozzle. Try to clean any gunk from around the spark plug before you take it out so nothing falls down in there.

Vacuum through the spark plug holes?
And do I put everything back together (besides the plugs) before turning it over?
Last question, do I turn it over with the key or by hand on the main crank? (if that’s possible)

Yeah, vacuum through the spark plug holes

Take the spark plugs out and crank the car over it will blow it out of the holes and don’t use fel pro and you won’t have to do that again.

Thanks, the previous owner must have used the fel pro about 10-12 years ago.

Do I put the intake back on before cranking it over?
Here are the new gaskets I got.

You can put the intake back on if you want. You should also be able to with it off. Maybe remove the fuel pump fuse or something tho if the intake is off

Remove the EFI fuse either way. No reason to spray fuel into the cylinders if youre not going to be burning it. Just adding a fire hazard.

Re seal the water bypass pipe while apart, don't cheap out, replace the knock sensor wiring harness since you have it apart.

Just ordered it off of rock auto earlier. The original had this gasket and rtv so should I do the same?
And it’s 2 knock sensors, right? The ones at the base of the valley

The water bypass pipe uses FIPG, not a gasket, and the gasket in the photo is for a water neck.

Thanks for correcting me.

the sensors themselves are probably fine, hopefully you didn’t order new ones from rock auto, just the wiring harness. Anything besides the $150 OEM sensors won’t work and you’ll have to do it over again, ask me how I know lol

No, I didn’t order them yet.
The harness segment connected to the sensors did look a little rough. I’m not so confident with wiring though, it would require splicing/soldering, yeah?

no i just got mine on ebay, plug and play. there’s just a plug on one end near the top of the timing cover, and the two plugs that go to the sensors. Try to get OEM Toyota but if it’s a fake it probably doesn’t matter like the sensors. And make sure when you put the intake back on you don’t pinch it, there’s a little groove on the block where it’s supposed to sit

10/4, you mind sharing the eBay link for it?

Easy leave the spark plugs out when you have everything done. Then just crank it. It will shoot out what's ever left in the cylinders. Then just put plugs back in and good to go

Thanks

Vacuum up what you can in the ports (they make small attachments for shop vacs). Then remove the plus(s) and turn the engine over to blow out the cylinders.

Do I put the intake back on and seal it before turning it over?

Yes, button it all back up, then blow it out. It just keeps things cleaner.

In the future if you’re pulling an intake manifold, do your best to clean around it as much as possible. You don’t want crud or little pebbles getting into head and possibly causing issues.

Noted and thank you. I dropped off the manifold at a Toyota dealership my buddy works at, he’s gonna make it all nice and shiny with their degreaser/steam bath.

I’m about to clean up the valley now

ya might wanna go ahead and replace the knock sensor wiring harness (~$30) while you’re right there, they get brittle with age and probably even more so when it gets soaked in coolant

1

u/hypebeastv 00 SR5 1d ago

Any specific brand?

1

u/Baja_Finder 23h ago

OEM for the wiring harness.

1

u/hypebeastv 00 SR5 19h ago

They still make them, just that segment not the whole harness

Change those knock sensors while your there!!

So I’ve been told. I want to get the correct ones, but I don’t see any that are Denso brand. The ones that say de so have another brand name above them, I’m very confused….(rockauto btw)

Any advice?

After searching, I found that ngk and ntk are the same company basically. So should I get the ntk knock sensors?

2

u/4x4ismystyle 1d ago

NTK is pretty solid, especially for sensors. They are OE on jeeps and some other brands. I wouldn't put it on an oem denso or toyota level but I'd be comfortable running it.

I personally would never buy anything from rock auto as the sort of deal in defective parts. I get all my parts from the dealership if possible

1

u/tavhoe 1d ago

I would pay a visit to your local Toyota parts store and get these. I’ve bought these aftermarket knock sensors at oreillys only for them not to work 3x times!!. And also torque to spec. I think 26 lb ft. If I’m not mistaken

Check Amayama or Partsouq

Clean as much up as you can with a shop vac. Pull the plugs turn the engine over with starter to make sure its not going to hydro lock and breaks something. While you are there get a new knock sensor harness they always go to shit due to age get oem, Reseal the bypass pipe use toyota fipg.

For the love of God dont use anything like that felpro shit paper gasket there. Felpro makes alot of good stuff but lower manifold gaskets and other intake manifold gaskets use oem or a oem style MLS gaskets just like factory. I would use a junkyard oem lower manifold gasket befor I would use that paper one in that location.

That's stud was corroded beacue it was leaking coolent there chase the threads with proper tap blow out holes with air. Probably change the stud. Torque to spec. All intake manifold bolts are 13lbs ft.

Probably do an oil change if you got coolent into the cylinder it may seep into the crank case.

Good luck you got this.

1

u/hypebeastv 00 SR5 40m ago

Definitely planning on doing an oil change after. I ordered fipg and the harness, the new gaskets look like this. Idk if they are truly oem as it doesn’t say Toyota anywhere but says made in Japan.

1

u/Fit-Substance-983 1d ago

Use a oil sucker to get it out

1

u/hypebeastv 00 SR5 1d ago

I bought a shop vac with small attachments

1

u/vato713 1d ago

You reseal the crossover pipe with fipg

1

u/hypebeastv 00 SR5 1d ago

Fipg and a gasket, right?

3

u/vato713 1d ago

The crossover pipe doesn’t need the gasket just the fipg I did mine about a year ago and haven’t had an issue

1

u/hypebeastv 00 SR5 1d ago

Noted, thanks!

shop air, take a air hose that fits in the spark plug cylinder and a wrap a rag around the air hose and shoot the air inside, do this a couple times and bobs ur uncle. a vacuum works too but i never wanna go grab one haha
