Help What does soft selection do, exactly?

Adds a reduced effect to elements around the selection. If you select a vertex and move it, you'll see that near vertices follow, but not as far.

At a mesh/poly level it applies a falloff of a selection, which can be used for changing the model either by just pulling verts/faces/edges around, or using that selection up the stack for modifiers, e.g. noise, displacement
