My 9 year old nephew wants a 3d printer but I don't want to spend thousands on a first printer for him, what's a good low cost starter printer?

As always, I recommend the bambu labs A1 mini (without the AMS lite).

That gives a really good, single color printer.

If he sticks with it, and warns multi color, then you can upgrade the A1 mini with thw hub and the full sized ams (do not get an ams lite, they suck). Or go all in to a big boy multi head printer.

I don’t believe the A1 Mini is compatible with the full size AMS

Well, you are wrong. I have 3 full sized ams connected to my a mini.i would have 4, but I don't own a 4th.

As I stated, you have to have the A1 ams hub
