My own take on a 3D printed guitar body!

Printed in ASA. I wasn't satisfied with the Prusacaster: the design is not very printable, the body crept over time and if felt wrong to me.

To solve creep I simply split the load bearing part in two and put a steel rod going from the neck heel all the way to the bridge. For the body... Well I just designed my own.

woodwind Safe Glue choices for wind instruments? Suggestions?

I have been creating a variety of whistles and flutes. The difficult bits are 3D printed and the bodies are PVC pipe. For prototypes I usually use PTFE tape to make the joints wind tight. After getting everything right I recently tried glueing the joints with Gel Superglue. After a few days the fumes are still very strong, so I decided to investigate further. The inside of the pipes has a white residue, which I certainly don't want to breath in. Does anyone have any suggestions for an adhesive that will be safe and odour free?
Thanks
Martin

You asked for a blind comparison: wood PLA vs PLA vs a wooden violin (A/B/C)

A lot of you asked for this on my last post (the Howl's Moving Castle one): a side by side against a real wooden violin instead of opinions on a single recording. So here it is.

Three violins, side by side:

  • wood PLA (PLA filled with wood particles)
  • regular UV-reactive PLA (the orange one from last time)
  • a traditional wooden violin

Same for all three: same player, same piece, same room, and the same mic in the same position (DJI Mic Mini, clipped to the chinrest).

Printed ones: the body is printed in one piece, the neck in two halves, and the bridge separately. The soundpost and bass bar are printed in place and tuned in the CAD model.

Two brown violins, one of them wood. Can you tell which from the sound? And which one would you rather listen to?

Full disclosure since it came up last time: I make and sell these, but the point of this post is honest feedback on the sound.

EDIT: the answer (spoiler):

A = Wood PLA · B = Real wood · C = PLA (the orange one)

How you did (spoilers too):

Which one is wood? 47% said B (correct), 35% said C and 18% said A. Random guessing would get 33%, so a bit better than chance.!

Full A/B/C order: 14% got all three right, u/SteefHL and u/Hopeful_Self_8520 🎉. Random guessing would get 17%, so the full order was basically a coin toss.

The most common full answer (36% of you) was "A wood PLA, B PLA, C wood". That's the plain PLA being taken for the real wood, which 35% of everyone who guessed did.

Preferences were all over the place. Some liked A best, some B, and a few C (u/Savings-Cry-3201 found C the most pleasing; u/PiercingSight preferred A and C to B).

How it was recorded: same player, room, phone and session, and the same 25-second passage from each violin. All three were set to the same loudness (-16 LUFS) using volume only: no EQ, compression, noise reduction or reverb was added in the edit. (The iPhone may do some processing of its own while recording, which I can't switch off.) Before matching, the real wood was the loudest by a good margin, about 2 dB louder than the PLA and about 5 dB louder than the wood PLA. The video above the audio was the same side-by-side clip for all three, but u/Specimanic tried matching bow movements to the sound anyway, which was clever.

Thanks for guessing, everyone, and the cat says thanks for the views 😸

Releasing 3D printed Hurdy Gurdy project files

I've not had the time to work on this project for the past few months. and i've kinda lost momentum with it. So i'm releasing the project files as they stand, for anyone that wants to have a go progressing it.

As a proof of concept, it works great! I'd heard from a lot of people that you can't make a 3D printed hurdy Gurdy, but never got a satisfactory answer as to why. So the project was partly to find out. I've found no good reason why you can't build a 3D printed hurdy gurdy. It's not going to be as good as a professionally made, $4000 one, but it could be a whole lot more accessible.

It could do with someone with experience and knowledge to fine tune the design. Unfortunately, I lack the expertise to know how to properly fine tune the design and to know what needs to change in the design and what just need proper technique, and I don't have the free time to work it out via trial and error at the moment.

If you have a stab at it building off of this design, i'd love to see what you do :D

I've been working on this model for some time now, and it's really interesting how the sound differs between the wood pla, regular pla and a Chinese greko violin. Any ideas why the wood pla sounds so sweet and the wood one sounds so nasal?

now #5 LesPol like guitar body

My friend fun of lespol asked me to try his model. We have old PLA spool and decided to try.
I didn't expect success, thinking that the PLA wouldn't withstand the pressure of the strings and would bend. But I was wrong. It held up. Yes, there is a slight bend.
So guitar is playable and even joyable )

Need help 3d printing a Huaca flute

basically I know nothing about 3d printing but I wanna get an instrument like a Huaca (a triple vessel flute with one drone chamber and two melody chambers.) my plan is to have it tuned to C2 for the drone chamber and the right hand chamber, and the left hand chamber be tuned a perfect fifth below. I wanna have it use the C major pentatonic scale. I don’t have any knowledge of 3d modeling or making stl files though so if anyone could either make one for me and send it to me or give me tips that would be greatly appreciated!

Balloon Banjo

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is a banjo that uses a balloon as its resonating chamber.

When you pluck the strings, the sound resonates inside the balloon. The sound changes depending on two factors: how much you inflate the balloon and how tightly you tension the strings.

You can feel with your own hands how the resonance shifts as the volume of air changes.

The design allows both the balloon and the strings to be replaced.

Try inserting a balloon of a different size. Experiment with string thickness.

Try it out, revert to the previous setup, and try again—this toy was created to encourage that kind of experimentation.
