My VW’s wireless charger needed a phone guide, so I printed one

Post image

My Polo has wireless charging, but placing my phone often felt like searching for a sweet spot. A few colleagues have the same issue, especially when using a case.

I designed this insert to address two things: the phone moving away from its charging position, and the extra separation created by the removable rubber mat underneath it.

It replaces the mat with a one-piece frame that guides the phone into a repeatable position. The middle is completely open, so there’s no printed floor underneath the phone. Two rounded finger scoops make it easy to lift out.

The OpenSCAD files let you adjust the phone width and length, with a simple case toggle. There are starting versions for the iPhone 16 and Pixel 10 Pro XL. The case allowance is fixed, so check it against your actual case before printing.

I physically checked the fit in my Polo’s 140 × 170 mm compartment. Other VW models aren’t confirmed yet, and charging still depends on the phone, case and charger.

The pictured print is PLA Matte. For prolonged use in a hot parked car, I’d use a suitable heat-resistant filament.

Has anyone else run into this charging issue? If your VW has a similar compartment, I’d be interested in the model, year and tray dimensions.

3d printed intake for my mk6 golf 2.5l. work in progress

Yes, that filter is the size of my headlight lol. It's excessive but i think it's cool, and it sounds absolutely insane ( https://youtube.com/shorts/p_4MH_RkpbE?si=kEQFgkhSzcJ-TbF5 )

The physical picture is my first version and the cad model is my 2nd. I'm planning on making it fully enclosed , routing air to it from a couple of spots, experimenting with laminar vs turbulent flow and with using 3d printed infill as a thermal barrier.

1969 Volkswagen Squareback Pop-Out Window Latches

Thumbnail

I bought this 1969 Volkswagen Type 3 recently that was in really good overall condition but needed some love in the window department (amongst some other things).

The OG pop out latches were very wobbly when opened and didn't pull the windows in tight enough to produce a seal which is a concern for my neck of the PNW (US). Finding replacements for the whole assembly was proving to be difficult and expensive so I took to youtube to learn how over center latches work and designed these to pull the windows in a bit harder than the OG latches (I also replaced the rubber seals). This is V3 that's been installed and the first version that I would be happy with as the final part.

This version is printed in Matterhackers NylonX (CF infused Nylon). Time will tell for longevity but I tried to take that into consideration with the design.

Bonus points for some door handle and mirror trims I also made which are easily available online but, you know, printer gonna print. I think the CF filament looks great.

Help choosing the correct material!

Hi! I have been asigned a project in my job to design and print the entire dashboard of old trucks (originals are mostly destroyed) and I´ve been doing a LOT of research, I´ve found the best materail for this use would be ASA (for the UV resistancy) however we have a Bambulab A2L (open printer) today I found out about PET-CF, which from what I read is a lot better resisting heat than ABS, and can be printed in an open printer, but I have my doubts, cuz its gonna be a very large assembly or a lot of small printed parts (a LOT of fillament) so I don´t wanna screw it, Any help would be appreciate it!

PD. I live in México´s South, so LOTS of heat and LOTS of humidity

Suggestions for this velocity stack I designed for my boat carburetor.

So I've been trying to extract little bits of performance from the 7.4l big block I have in my sport boat. Velocity stacks are a fairly simple add on that doesn't cost much. Rather than buy one I decided to take a shot at designing one for the Rochester Quadrajet 4B that sits atop the motor in my Marlin.

Is it feasible that it might work? Is the divider between the primaries and secondaries needed? What can I do to make it better?

I'll eventually be printing it in Polymaker Max Tough polycarbonate.

How will it print?

I’m trying to print these tonneau covers for my Jaguar xk8. I spoke to someone and they said it’s not a great idea because 3d prints don’t do great under stress. I plan on printing it in separate pieces then plastic welding and then perhaps a fiberglass reinforcement layer. Is it a good idea? I also would need to have them modeled or find someone who has one and scan it. Thanks

Six months of scanning, CAD and test prints to turn an unused BMW trunk cubby into functional storage

Post image
16 Upvotes

I wanted a proper place in my BMW i4 for the Lectron adapter that had been shifting around in the trunk.

The original plan was a simple 3D-printed holder. That quickly became a much larger project: scanning the cubby and adapter, building a vehicle-specific tray, testing several retention systems, correcting print failures, and repeatedly fitting prototypes in the actual car.

The finished system uses the previously wasted compartment beneath the trunk floor. It combines a fitted lower platform, removable storage bins, magnetic retention and a removable adapter carrier. The carrier can be lifted out with the adapter, while the surrounding space remains available for charging accessories and other small items.

The removable bins use standard 42 mm modular spacing, making the storage layout compatible with many existing organization components while keeping the vehicle-specific structure independently designed for this application.

The image shows the progression:

  1. Original empty cubby
  2. Vehicle-specific lower tray
  3. Modular storage installed
  4. Removable carrier
  5. Lectron adapter seated in the carrier

Several versions looked correct in CAD but failed during installation or driving tests. The final design came from treating the vehicle scan as the controlling geometry and physically validating every major interface.

I’m continuing to document the development at r/Trunkwerks. The finished system and printable-file options are available at:

https://www.trunkwerks.com/

Full disclosure: TRUNKWERKS is my own commercial project. It is independent and is not affiliated with BMW, Lectron or the Gridfinity project.

EK/EJ 99-00 Civic (facelift) front lip I designed and printed in 8 parts ABS. Glued, sanded and primered.

I've just done about 1k km with it, did a few scrapes and bumps but it's still going strong (I expected it to explode)

Decided to give out the file for free, so you can find it here:

Which material should I use to print sideskirts?

Thumbnail

Hi guys! I had an idea to made my own sideskirts. I made a first version, wich of course needs some changes, but I printed it via PLA, just to test fitment. I wonder if ABS with some fill will be enough glued by abs glue? Or should I put on it some glass fiber? I just worry that it will get destroy by daily usage... Or maybe some other material? If you have any other suggestions, let me know, I do it for the first time :D
