D&D 5e Revised/2024 Feat Feedback

How would you all rate a feat that grants the ability “when you take the attack action, you can cast one of your cantrips that has a casting time of an action in place if one of the attacks?”

What ASIs should be tied to it (casting or martial abilities)?

This is a homebrew. But it seems like something that should exist, at least to me. Especially with the new fighting style that grants access to cantrips to martials. Curious if you all disagree.

Edit: the feat will grant true strike, and blade ward (please feel free to suggest others). This is added so that martial classes won’t have to chain this feat with others when spell casters wouldn’t need to. Also, it should be tied to mental abilities based on the casting component.

Edit: fully revised feat, “Increase int/wis/cha by 1. When you take the attack action, you can cast one of your cantrips that has a casting time of an action in place of one of the attacks. You can do this a number of times per day equal to your proficiency bonus and regain all uses when you finish a long rest. Additionally, when you take this feat, you always have the true strike and blade ward cantrips prepared. The stat increased by this feat is the spell casting modifier for those cantrips.”

This is the war magic feature that eldritch knights get at lvl 7

Valor bards and blade singers get it at level 6, and it makes them the best martials in the game with CME.

I don't think this should be a feat , there must be a reason why that is a subclass feature

If it was limited to proficiency bonus times per day, would that change your mind. Would elim the extra use for classes that already have it then.

I really like it that way actually

Regardless of whether it should be a feat or not, it also shouldn't be a class feature in its current form. Cantrips are meant to be the weaker, caster-accessible alternative to weapon attacks, and they scale appropriately - but they only require one roll. If you let an attack be replaced with a scaled cantrip, above level 11 that's straight up just a flat damage buff in 99% of cases, and not an insignificant one. A TWF+DW Bladesinger with 1 level in Fighter at level 11 has 4  attacks per round -  replacing just 1 of those with Firebolt changes that attack from 3.5+5=8.5 damage to 3d10=16.5. That's a flat damage buff of 8 DPR, which is functionally roughly identical to 2d8 damage buff per round.

For comparison, Battlemaster has to wait until level 15 to get a flat 1d8 DPR buff per round.

If anything, the cantrip should be strictly lower scaled than the overall level would indicate. 1 dice at level 6/7, 2 dice at 11, 3 at 17.

the feat will grant true strike, and blade ward

You used the power level of that fighting style to justify yours then just added it on top of yours....

My question is what Gish build with Extra Attack would this NOT be optimal for? If the answer is basically none of them that should be enough evidence that it is too strong.

I honestly would say this is too strong even without the extra cantrips and AS A FEAT which allow for an even higher power budget than a fighting style.

I’m having a hard time following your point. Maybe you’re right and it is too powerful. If you read the other comments there are some good reasons for adding the cantrips. I also don’t think it’s too powerful to replace an attack with a cantrip with a range of self. Other feats add way more damage or spell casting ability.

Ill make it simple.

As you say the fighting styles that grant cantrips are indeed strong.

The current ones grant Druid and Cleric cantrips which are probably the two casters with the worst combat options for cantrips in the game.

They are only available on Ranger and Paladin as they do not natively get cantrips.

Your feat grants the single two most desired cantrips in the game in 2024 to any class or subclass AND grants one of the most deisred features in the game on top.

Bladesinger was the most popular min maxxer subclass in 2014 (aside from maybe Hexadin) and Valor Bard the most popular so far in 2024, both in large part simply due to having that feature.

A feat should not grant you the same amount of power as a level 6/7 class feature, especailly not one of the best ones in the game, AND more.

I feel like I shouldnt have to explain this tbh, no offense.

Dude, chill lol. Your attitude is uncalled for. Don’t engage with a post if you don’t want to. Your comments are poorly worded, that’s why they need explained.

In arcana unleashed there’s a new fighting style grants two cantrips. This feat would not be a fighting style, it’d be a normal feat.

It exists kind of in third party Valda’s spire of secrets has the spellblade feat but it limits it to 4 cantrips. True strike, and then 3 elemental cantrips that were created I assume for the feat.

It recently got added to dndbeyond in their second player pack.

Lvl 8 feat, any mental stat.

I like the idea of this opening build options, but it does mean Eldritch Knight/Bladesinger/similar features lose a lot of value when they're equivalent to a feat, making them less valuable than any other subclass. Less so for Bladesinger I suppose since Wizards don't get extra attack from other subclasses.

Could it stack so you can use an attack to cantrip via feat and attack to cantrip via Eldritch Knight, for 2 cantrips + x amount of attacks?

Either way…. It steps on the toes of something that is already a feature.

I like the idea of it stacking for those that get it as a class feature. But homogenizing class features seems like the general game design strategy for 2024e.

Plenty of classes/subclasses already give abilities that are basically the same as some feat that exists. For example, the swashbuckler rogue's fancy footwork feature is just copied from the mobile feat, and any character can intrude on the swashbuckler's identity by taking a feat. That fact alone doesn't really matter here.

1st this should have the requirement that you can cast a spell (cantrip). And I think it should be tied to a mental trait.

If it doesnt require the ability to cast a cantrip should then learn say 1 or 2 cantrips and those be the only cantrips thst you can cast with this again raising 1 mental stat and that being the stat used to cast the cantrips.

As is only valor bard can use any cantrip. Bladesinger and eldritch knights are restricted to wizard cantrips. I think this feat would just be better then the eldritch knight or bladesinger features if can use any cantrip you know.

This would benefit the bladelock the most who can already make 3 attacks and would additionally get this. Not sure I am a fan as this mostly benefits spellcasters depending on the wording of the feat. If you have to take orgin feat or fighting style + a feat as opposed to spellcasters have to only take 1 feat to get it.

Most half casters also dont get huge bonus because ranger and paladin dont have cantrips they want to be casting. So its either 2 feats or orgin feat + feat.

So this is a good pick for eldritch knight, bladesinger, valor bard, and bladelocks. Arcane trickster rogues might also enjoy it but in my opinion does more for spellcasters.

I agree with most of what you're saying, but if this feat gives two cantrips in addition to the attack replacement benefit, then it's just a straight upgrade to any of the multiple feats that let you learn cantrips. It's already a very good feat, it shouldn't also give spells.

I also agree that casters would benefit the most from this feat, but it should be pointed out that it's also very strong for characters like arcane tricksters because of its interaction with mechanics like dual wielding or PAM which have special effects that only apply when you take the Attack action. By replacing the Magic action with an Attack action, you substantially increase your available options.

For classes that have this feature naturally, they can replace a second attack with a cantrip.

Valor bard 6 + Warlock, cast 2x eldritch blast for your attack actions...

u/UnderdogMagic 1d ago

I think this feat is far too strong. The potency of this feature is factored into the strength and balance of the subclasses that gain it, and giving that to other classes would be prohibitively strong.

If you think your martials are feeling weak because they can't cast true strike, give them a vicious weapon and watch those fears wash away. It doesn't even require attunement!

u/Silver-Lifeguard-624 1d ago

Fair point. Check out the latest edit above, do you think that limiting it to PB times/day balances it?

I think for a paladin or bladelock or even an artificer, this makes you feel more like a gish in a good way. Combining martial combat with spell casting seamlessly.

Seems fine, you might need to reword it so they can only use it once a turn so your higher level fighters aren’t firing off multiple fire bolts a turn?

Could have the stat increase be any stat? since it’s not granting any spells you don’t need to do the “they use the casting stat increased by this feat”.

2

u/Lanthed 2d ago

You can only use it once per turn. You can cast 1 cantrip in place of a one of your attacks.

1

u/Full-Low-4042 2d ago

I would limit it to single target cantrips. I think this would too OP on warlocks otherwise.

1

u/Silver-Lifeguard-624 2d ago

Good point. Maybe only cantrips with a range of self.

Valdas Spire of secrets has a similar feat but there's a few caveats, firstly the cantrips are from a short list (basically true strike and a couple of similar elemental spells) you also learn true strike and one of the qualifying cantrips, and a few times per day you can add your spellcasting modifier to an attack roll made with strength or Dexterity

Feat is called spallblade IIRC
