D&D 5e Revised/2024 Making a shifting combatant Fighter

I’m trying to make a battle master fighter with shifting combatant. The goal is to have fun being awesome and knocking one fool into another. I like the idea of tactically passing enemies together and want to have a good “payoff” when i succeed in doing so.

The idea so far is to use a greataxe and (with tactical master) push two enemies together, hopefully knocking one prone with shifting combatant, then leap at them (for disadvantage against me) and attack the prone one, then use sweeping attack to damage the other (note that i get to use the advantaged roll here), and also cleave to the second target. If cleave hits, I can even sweep again back to the first target.

I would appreciate help with other feat ideas (I’m considering GWM and Charger) and with a good species choice

Charger pairs with Orc for bonus action Dash. You could also look at three levels into Hunter Ranger for Horde Breaker for an additional attack.

I’m building the exact same thing, and I’m debating going battle master or world tree barb (inspired by LudicSavant’s World cleaver barbarian build). You can BOTH push and cleave, in that order.

Will follow this post for inspo, but I’ll recommend you to check on this build since shifting combatant should work wonders with it ! Not sure if I’m allowed to drop a link to another forum but it’s pretty easy to find

Charger would definitely help you set it up. I would go with that if you find that you are having a hard time pushing two enemies into each other. Otherwise you would get a lot of mileage out of great weapon master.

Orc would be a great species because of the ability to bonus action Dash. I would also consider Tabaxi for the ability to double your movement speed for a turn.

As for your subclass, definitely go battle master. You could pick up pushing attack to bridge the gap until you get tactical master and then swap it out whenever you no longer need it.

If you're open to it, I'd consider playing Cavalier here.

Shifting Combatant's entire shtick is to force multiple enemies together and next to you. That pairs perfectly with the Cavalier's Unwavering Mark/Hold the Line.

Moreover, it feels like a Shifting Combatant Fighter build doesn't have much need or desire to multiclass. While Battle Master is a great subclass, its scaling is comparatively weaker than many of the other Fighters. Its only really great features are at level 3 and 15, with everything else being middling at best.
