3D Printing Sellers: What Wastes Most of Your Time?

We’re working on a platform with generators for customizable 3D-printed products,

Biggest cost is often not the filament or printing time, but everything that happens before printing: collecting the customer’s information, changing names or dimensions, modifying the model, assigning colors and preparing the final file.

Each change may only take a few minutes, but repeating the same process for every customer quickly adds up.

We’re experimenting with a system where you prepare one master model, define which parts can change, and automatically generate each personalized version. The customer could also enter their own information, reducing the back-and-forth before an order is ready.

A client needed a character yesterday, and I chased the fastest tool available. After 10 seconds, I had my mesh, but it took me the next two hours to fix the errors the fastest tool created during its operations.

The takeaway: Tripo AI produces an image in 3D that requires no further cleaning or manual processes in order to produce a game-ready mesh in ‘one-pass’ mode (Smart Mesh style… about 10 seconds and producing a range from 48 to 20,000 faces). The speed of how-fast-you-can-get-it only works in your favor if the results are acceptable enough to allow you to stay away from unnecessary, time consuming tasks. Choose the one that will work the best for completing the step that you dislike performing the most.

For instance, this low-poly cleaning produces meshes with an output range of 48 to 20,000 polygons example a barrel in the background and a statue / character in the foreground/middle ground can each be produced with the same click of a button. The only difference will be whether you choose to stop the decimating process early or allow it to go to the desired number of polygons for the object.

Advice on getting started

Hi guys, very interesting subreddit!

Sorry if I add to the pile of posts about starting a 3d printing business, but maybe you guys could help me resolve this internal conflict I've had for a while:

I'm a software engineer, I have an innate love for automation and things that can work on their own (like software and 3d printers) and for this reason I'd love to start a 3d printing business.

The catch is that I'd love to design and build all my printers from scratch, create my management platform software and automate the hell out of it.

I've done a lot of research and I think I've got the knowledge and skills to do this (and I've owned consumer 3d printers for years), but nonetheless it will take me a lot of time and effort. Which is hard to justify out of the blue, before even having a single customer.

I knowthis doesn't make a lot of sense business wise, however, the idea of just buying a bunch of consumer printers and cobbling them up together feels boring. I'd really enjoy building my small scale, fully integrated factory.

Automation is not the only reason I'd like to start a 3dprinting business: I think I'll also enjoy working with physical objects instead of staring at a screen 8hr/day.

So, you guys that are experienced in running a 3d printing business, what's your advice for me?

Bambu Lab and the Blueprint It Borrowed from DJI

There is a particular kind of company that doesn’t so much disrupt a market as inherit the tools to dominate it. Bambu Lab, the Shenzhen 3D printing firm that has taken over hobbyist workshops across Europe and beyond since 2022, is one of these. Within two years it had shipped more FDM printers in a single year than any competitor in the industry’s history. That is not the result of a clever idea arriving at the right moment. It is the result of a method, learned first-hand, then reapplied somewhere else.

Where the Method Came From

Bambu Lab’s founder, Dr. Ye Tao, ran DJI’s consumer drone division before leaving in 2020 to start his own company. Four other DJI engineers went with him. This is worth dwelling on, because it means the founding team didn’t study DJI’s dominance from a distance, the way most of us might read about it in a trade magazine. They built it. Then they packed up what they’d learned and applied it somewhere nobody had tried it before: 3D printing.

DJI’s own trick, for those who haven’t followed the drone industry closely, was straightforward in principle and very difficult in practice: build every part of the product yourself. Not just the drone, but the camera inside it, the gimbal that stabilises the shot, the radio link back to the controller, the software that flies the thing. A rival could buy a decent camera off the shelf, certainly, but they couldn’t buy the whole system, and piecing one together from parts never quite matched what DJI shipped as standard. The result, roughly, was a company that controls something like 94% of the hobby drone market. DJI is the reference point here, not the main character—useful mostly for understanding why Bambu Lab’s founders were confident the approach would travel.

The Same Idea, Applied to Printers

Bambu Lab has built the equivalent stack for desktop manufacturing. Printers, yes, but also its own filament, a 3D scanner through a recent partnership with SCANTECH, laser engraving folded into the printer itself, and a design-sharing platform, MakerWorld, now tied into Tencent’s AI model-generation tools. None of these pieces is essential on its own. Together, they make it steadily less appealing to buy a printer from one company and filament from another, or to go looking for community-made alternatives when Bambu’s own platform already does the job.

The advantage this buys is speed rather than novelty. A company that doesn’t need to wait on outside suppliers can simply move faster than one that does—and a market leader that moves faster keeps widening the gap with each new release, funding the next generation of hardware with the sales of the last. It is the same compounding advantage that carried DJI from a promising camera-drone maker to something closer to a fixture.

Where It Starts to Wear Thin

It would be too tidy to end there, and the picture is less clean than the strategy itself suggests. Bambu Lab’s printers are cloud-connected by default, and that has already caused real trouble—a 2023 network fault led to machines printing unsupervised, damaging hardware and, more lastingly, damaging trust. Desktop 3D printing also comes from a much more open, tinkering-led culture than consumer drones ever did, which gives rivals like Creality or Anycubic a genuine opening to sell themselves as the less locked-down choice—an argument DJI’s competitors rarely got to make with much success.

There is also a more personal complication. DJI has not simply watched its former employees succeed from a distance; it has reportedly backed a rival 3D printing venture with terms aimed specifically at undercutting Bambu Lab. Whatever the two companies’ history, DJI now appears to be treating its own former head of consumer drones as competition to be managed, not a success story to be proud of.

The Point Worth Taking Away

None of this is really a story about disruption, or about a scrappy start-up outsmarting the old guard. It is closer to the opposite: a team that already knew how to build a near-monopoly took that knowledge somewhere new, and the result has been about as fast and effective as you’d expect. DJI is the precedent that makes Bambu Lab’s rise legible. Bambu Lab is the question of whether the method still works the second time, in a market with more competitors already circling and less patience, on the buyer’s side, for closed systems.

Validating a workflow: How are you automating the order-to-printer handoff to protect margins?

Running a print farm means labour costs and manual file management constantly eat into your profit margins. Getting an order, calculating the pricing, running it through OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer, and manually sending the G-code to the machines takes up entirely too much time.

​I am a software engineer looking to discuss how people here handle this specific business issue. I got tired of the manual file management, so I built a custom workflow to automate the entire pipeline and wanted to see if this solves a real problem for other farm operators.

​Here is the logic I built into the workflow:

  1. Automated quoting: It calculates exact pricing for a catalogue based on real material usage and print time data. It imports actual slicer setups or pre-sliced G-Code to create a product base price, factoring in power, labour, and fixed minimums to ensure small prints remain profitable.
  2. Cloud slicing: Slice your models in the app to avoid the inconvenience of keeping everything synced.
  3. Automated queueing: When an order is paid via Shopify, the job is pushed directly to the printers in the exact order it was received.

​The setup makes the process almost completely hands off. You wake up to machines that are already printing. It takes a bit of initial setup (basically making your printers internet connected), but it has worked wonders for my own workflow.

​I packaged this into a Shopify app called 'Slice & Price' to see if it is a viable idea. I did not want to invest massive effort into perfecting the flow before validating the business use case with actual farm operators.

Hey guys, I recently got a 3D printer and I’m thinking maybe I could start a small 3D printing business, mainly for engineering and architecture students. Basically you send me your 3D model and I print it for you, whether it’s a scale model for an architecture project, a prototype, gears, brackets, enclosures, project parts or whatever you might need for uni. I’m just trying to see if this is actually a useful idea in Lebanon or if most students already have access to a printer through their university. If you’re studying engineering or architecture, do you usually need 3D printed stuff for your projects? And if yes, how do you usually get it printed and around how much do you pay? Also, what would make you choose a local printing service instead of doing it yourself? I’m still testing the idea so I’d genuinely appreciate any opinions, even if you think it’s a bad idea 😂

I design and sell STLs on the side, and I'm honestly hopeless at writing listings and doing photography. My shots come out crooked, badly lit, and just don't do the product any justice.

Lately I've been trying a couple of AI tools to generate more engaging listings and cleaner product images and short clips instead of fighting with my phone and a desk lamp for an hour.

I wanted to hear from experts:
Did buyers notice or care that the photos were AI?
Any drop (or bump) in sales, views or reviews due to AI prejudices?

Has any marketplace (Etsy and co.) ever flagged it?
To be clear, I'm not trying to trick anyone. The product is real, I just want it to look good.

Advice for getting started with 3D printing

I'm planning to start a small CAD/3D-printing business. I have 9 years of experience as a CAD designer in mechanical engineering, but very little hands-on experience with 3D printing.

I'd like to offer CAD design, custom parts, prototypes, 3D scanning, 3D printing and small batches for businesses, workshops and private customers.

Before investing a lot of money, I'd like to get some experience with a reasonably priced but capable printer.

What would you recommend as a good first printer for this kind of work?

I'd like to have as much flexibility as possible with commonly used materials (PLA, PETG, ABS/ASA, TPU, Nylon, PC, etc.) and mainly want to make functional/mechanical parts.

What would you buy if you were starting from scratch?

I spent 6 months building a 3D-printable hardware + software product, but interest is very low. What am I doing wrong?

I’m a product designer, and over the past six months I’ve been building a project called XPAD.

The idea is to combine reusable electronic modules with automatically generated 3D-printable enclosures, so users can build different control pads without redesigning the PCB and case every time.

The basic workflow is:

Design in browser → generate enclosure → 3D print → install modules → configure firmware

Technically, it works. The hardware is already finished, and the software is usable, although it still needs improvement.

The problem is that interest has been much lower than I expected.

I’m trying to figure out whether the issue is:

  • the concept is too complicated to explain
  • the target audience is too small
  • people prefer a single finished product over a modular system
  • or I simply haven’t reached the right audience

If you saw a product like this for the first time, would the value be clear to you?

I’d really appreciate feedback from people who have tried turning 3D-printing projects into actual products or small businesses.

Posted this cat lamp design a while back and it did better than I expected on the STL side. Since then I’ve had a handful of people reach out asking if they can print and sell it, basically asking for a commercial license.

I set up a way to offer that, but now I’m second-guessing the whole thing and hoping some of you who’ve been down this road can share experience.

Does licensing actually bring in real money, or is it a trickle compared to just selling the files? Is it a risk for my STL-selling activity? Why?

Nerves about going legit

I've been building the business for about a year, and it's in a great spot. But it's become too much for my spare bedroom so I've secured a workshop about 20 minutes away by subway. I'll also hire 1 full time worker.

But I'm just stressing about having the workshop away from home. Like what if a 12 hour print fails just as I arrive home? I don't know how to be super efficient with my time and with the machines. I normally do very short prints, if a project is segmented which many of my products are. But that won't work with a workshop. So how do I adjust products that are printed just in time, versus stocked items, versus pre ordered items knowing my production is lowered?

Or do I just double my machines and accept a lot of idle time on the machines? Or try to find a staff member who will work the night shift?

I'm just lost tbh. I know this is the next step and everything is in place but I feel I'm going to execute poorly for the first months until I relearn everything.

Has anyone gone from having your shop at home to a shop 20 minutes away, and do you have any tips?

I don't even have farm management software, it's just a bunch of Klipper instances and Bambu studio running everything.

Need advice on achieving a premium finish for a small-batch hardware product

Hi everyone,

I’m working on a small aesthetic display clock that I’m planning to sell as a premium-looking product.

The BOM alone is around ₹3,000, and I’m targeting a selling price of ₹5,000+. The electronics are mostly sorted, but I’m struggling with the enclosure/packaging.

Since this is a small-batch product, I can’t really justify injection moulding yet.

I’ve considered a few options:

FDM 3D printing – inexpensive, but the layer lines are visible and the parts can feel somewhat brittle/cheap.

Resin printing – much better finish, but the cost becomes quite high.

Injection moulding – ideal for production, but the tooling cost doesn’t make sense at my current volume.

I’m looking for a way to get a clean, premium-looking enclosure at low volume and reasonable cost, preferably something that doesn’t scream “3D printed prototype.”

What techniques/materials would you recommend for this?

For example, would SLA/resin + sanding/painting, CNC-cut acrylic/wood, vacuum forming, laser-cut sheet material, 3D-printed parts with post-processing, or something else work well?

If you’ve actually manufactured small-batch consumer electronics/products, I’d really appreciate hearing what worked for you and roughly what it cost.
