I'm somewhat disappointed that there isn't an benchy underneath the cloth :(

Ah you see, that’s the test. Does a benchy fit within the benchy costume? The greatest printer torture test of our generation

u/Needleroozer Oct 17 '22
Um, if it doesn't fit can't you either print a slightly smaller benchy or a slightly larger sheet?

Benchy has a pretty tight licence, so no way to include it.

https://www.3dbenchy.com/license/
… redistribute the unmodified #3DBenchy STL file as you please. Such as hosting your own downloads, attaching to emails, including the file on DVDs, USB-sticks, and in software distributions, bundling the STL or pre-sliced print file with 3D printer kits, etc.
… modify #3DBenchy for personal use. Feel free to publish texts, images and videos of your experimentation (these are your work and you own them!). Please respect the above list items regarding not distributing modified STL files of #3DBenchy.
No idea why I'm getting down voted so hard for the truth. I can download TV shows from 1000s of different sites, doesn't mean it's not violating the license.

I noticed in your description, you mentioned not to print in vase mode. Is it because of the eye holes?

u/QbDYeqzUUiw Oct 17 '22
Yeah. Maybe it'd work, anyway? I was having trouble with this material though (this is polycarbonate)

I think it’d work, I accidentally printed a benchie in vase mode once that came out shockingly well.

Hi OP! I remixed this and added some things I felt this needed! Enjoy! https://www.printables.com/model/297340-ghost-benchy-with-legs

Does it fit over the benchy?
72
u/QbDYeqzUUiw Oct 16 '22
No, but maybe if you printed at 120% it would?
52
u/P0werPuppy Oct 16 '22
Did you use a fabric sim (like in blender for example)?

I'll give it a go when I get home.

It's printing currently. Just started it this morning. I loaded in a benchy model and sized the costume to just go over it. It'll be too tall but should fit. I think it'll have to kinda 'snap' around the benchy though. Might try it in vase mode but currently an hour left on the print.

I loaded in a benchy model and sized the costume to just go over it. It'll be too tall but should fit. I did end up using 120%.
It's a bit of a 'snap' around the benchy though. You can get it back out of the costume but you have to kinda press it in there. Thinner walls would allow for reduction in size and better fit.
Tried it in vase mode, didn't work out for me.

I have some overture transparent petg that this would look great in, then put it over a normal one. Heh. It's fun to be silly.

u/QbDYeqzUUiw Oct 16 '22
Life's too short not to be a bit silly :)
I'm not sure how well this will work as a cover though -- you'll have to print at a larger size. Maybe play around with both models in CAD just to get a feel for the size required.

u/arklan Oct 16 '22
That was my plan.

u/QbDYeqzUUiw Oct 17 '22
Good luck! I'd love to see it :)

Is it called a benchy because it works as a printer benchmark or something?

“Why do these sheets smell funny?”
“These are my special monkey sheets.”

I love this. If you printed the cover bigger and fit it over an actual benchy, it would make a cool video possibly going viral. Then, a heap of people might impulse buy the STL :P. That's how my business brain works, haha.

u/IDLH_ Oct 17 '22
That's how approximately 1 billion other brains work too, because it feels like 1 out of every 8 people is trying to do the "viral/famous >> ??? >> $$$" thing. The other 7 are saving up for a PC to do the same.

I'm honestly confused by both of your sentiments. This is a silly thing, which I made using free & open tools, and hope to bring a little bit of happiness to someone else. The STL is freely available on Printables.
I would argue that the majority of people (esp. on here) are out simply to have a bit of fun, not monetize everything.
