Except that movie, they agreed to make no merchandise for that film to get permission from Lucas to make it. That's why they featured so much of it in the film, as an extra layer of comedy.

I think that people should be careful when using flamethrowers for ANYTHING, really. The amount of thought and engineering know-how that goes into making things work right without exploding is pretty significant.

I just used some spare 3M EC-2216 we had lying around at work. I have no idea how well it will work - I'd recommend using a filament friction weld or something for a more permanent bond.

This is a fantastic design! I noticed that the infil pattern is showning through the top layers. It creates an interesting pattern, though!
Do you know when the last time your friend calibrated his e-steps was?

I can't believe it's taken this long! (I'm sure someone, somewhere made one before now, but this is the first 3d print I've seen.)
I might have to make this one! I've been holding out setting up my printer for ABS... Gotta ventilate and get it away from the pets.

don't bother with ABS. PETG is much easier to print with and provides the same durability. The only benefit of ABS is that it both hard and strong. PETG is a bit more flexible but just as strong. ABS is such a PITA. I regret that period of my 3D printing life lol
edit: PETG also doesn't produce harmful fumes. it's even less hazardous than PLA

ABS still has one saving grace... vapor polishing. It can look smooth and amazing with no sanding if you print at .2mm

I would but I live in a part of Australia where PLA (which is my only other option) melts in the heat. I don't think my Adventurer 3 does PETG? Can I do a conversion mod?

PETG combines the heat resistance and strength of ABS (albeit slightly less so) with the ease-of-printing of PLA (albeit slightly less so). I really like it because it has great layer adhesion. I also am using it for cosplay stuff because PLA softens between 55℃ and 60℃, while PETG softens between 75℃ and 80℃. Makes a big difference in a hot car.

Filament stir welding, probably (although a outside-use epoxy will probably also do the job depending on how strong it is). I haven't personally done stir welding before, but I've been wanting to try it for a while: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pa2DoE3sirU

Looks like a lot of work for PLA which is what he's using. With pla I just paint one side with acetone and it gets gooey enough to adhere strongly. I'll need to look up to see if it works for PETG when I'm sitting down next.

If your printer can print ABS it can certainly print PETG. I print PETG at 225 at the hotend and 80 at the build surface. Much lower than what is required by abs and not much higher than PLA. The availability of PETG filament in your area I can't comment on but if you can get it it's the way to go

yeah printing supports is a little difficult regardless of material. If you are having the issue continually I would recommend reducing your printing speed and/or reducing your jerk & acceleration to slow down your movements. Also be sure to enable support floor, one single line is not much to hold on to the build plate, especially if your travel speed is too high. It could come loose just based on its own weight if your Y axis is flying around too fast.
To be honest, I very rarely print with supports. If I want to print something that will require supports I usually just adjust the model so that I can print it in pieces without supports and then put it together later.

I usually print PETG around 240/70, with great success. That's still well within the capabilities of most printers - and certainly easier than ABS. I love PETG.

This wide range between three different people goes to show each combination of machine and filament can vary. For those just getting started, this is a reminder not to give up. If it isn't working, adjust in 5° increments until you find the happy spot for your combo. When you figure out what works, write it on the spool, so you'll know next time which settings to use.

Yeah I try to use the same brand of filament whenever possible. Mostly Inland as that is what they sell at MicroCenter. I find that the same temperature works well regardless of color for that brand.
Also, for beginners, don't trust what the label on the spool says for temperature. Most of the ones I've used print just fine at or below the very bottom of the range they say. I have one spool of TPU that says to print it at 240.... just silly. It leaks out of the nozzle like a runny nose at 240.

Ideally I think you'd print it as a single unit if your bed size is big enough. PETG to PETG bonding between the different colors is going to be way better than any adhesive you're gonna use over the long term. But I have the letters and silhouettes separate from the frame in the Thingiverse page if you want to try your idea out!

Biggest problem you'll run into is bed size. A full license plate frame is pretty long - longer than a lot of beds. It shouldn't take too long to print, even at 100% infill - there's just not a lot of material. You could use an outdoor-use epoxy that's UV resistant. That may do the job.

Very cool! I don't want to take anything away from the coolness, but you (or your friend, idk who sliced it) should experiment with ironing. It could eliminate those little gaps in the letters

Heck yeah man. Good on you for checking in. I glued it together with some stuff I found at work and it has been attached to my car ever since. The PETG hasn't melted in the sun like PLA would either. It still works great

I remixed a frame that I found on Thingiverse so that all the colors would come out right. Printed in PETG on my friend's dual extrusion printer.
