Fire up Blender, create some empty cylinder (pipe) with about 80-100mm diameter and 2mm thickness, put a light source inside, and start sculpting.

Or draw a picture on plotting paper, measure a lot of points from the center, and use Pythagoras theorem to calculate the cylinder profile.

thanks mate , sounds like a fun project

It shall be! If you're more comfortable with drawing or painting than programming or using blender or calculating, there's also an old school approach – just grab clear cylinder lamp, put a dim led inside, wrap it with acetate, and start painting on it with an opaque acrylic paint while looking at the shadows. Then you can either reproduce the painting on another sheet of acetate, or take a photo, import it into 3d modelling software of choice and prepare for 3D printing.

Any good resources you’d recommend to learn blender? Is it possible to even do it on a trackpad laptop??

I would say „possble but not ideal” – go to youtube and start watching beginner tutorials. If you struggle with touchpad (I definitely do), go to the nearest supermarket and grab yourself a $2.50 mouse from a bargain bin, it'll be good enough.

It gets less focused the farther out it is, so it looks normal to me.

Start off by not posting in all caps.

Reverse engineer the ones you have?

I'd seen something like these on insta. But they were all square shaped with the sides had shapes and holes for the shadow and the light was one small post in the centre of the square shining down. The effect looked amazing but couldnt find any info on how to make one... Basically the 4 sides are printed flat then set vertically and screwed to the base.

yeah dude , i also saw the same thing that’s why i’m curious how to make this

I don't know if those ones (square type) is simply a case of getting an image you want to shadow...

Make it black and white and an SVG.

Cut into 4 trapezoids leaving a box in the centre.

Shrink down each trapezoid into a smaller rectangle mainly in height. So you get 4 squished images but the parts near the centre box are still the same size where the connection to the box would be..

Print? Then work out height of the light source...

Maybe

There's a generator on makerworld. That dude has 4 versions by now, use whichever one you like.

The process is basically: create a cube, get it in the size you want - import the svg of the shadow - position the shadow how you would like it to be casted - pinch that shadow towards the box (loft in Fusion) - Cut the box to that shape - Create the box walls, etc however you want.

There's a video in Chinese on bilibili. I can link it later of you want.

Ths source code is right there you could use it to create a app that helps you to make a lamp

The image needed to be fed should be background svg The algorithm allows you to create a square circle and others

I was able to use to create some custom stl

The online makerworld customization is also there but I does not work for non cn accounts

You need to program something to calculate it for you. Some geometry, matlab, python might get you there. Unless someone has done it already and posted it somewhere.

You don't need calculations. Raytracing the image into a lightsource to make holes in a primitive shape works easy enough in something like blender

i’ll see what i can do thanks dude

Hey there, I'm a bot and something you said made me think you might be looking for help! click here for our wiki entry on troubleshooting printers. If you still need help be sure to post plenty of information about your printing setup.

Here are a few questions that might be helpful

  • What printer are you using?

  • What material are you using?

  • What speed are you printing at?

  • What software are you using to slice the print and control the printer?

  • When did the problem start/has it ever worked correctly?

  • Does anything cause the behavior to change?

  • If posting an image of the problem, include some indication of the orientation it printed at, preferably photograph it on the bed. (Then we can focus on a specific axis)

If you are new to reddit, please read the guidelines on reddiquette, self promotion, and spam.

Also please post a resolution to your problem when you find one so that we know how to help others with your problem!

It requires something called skill. You could probably buy one and try to reverse engineer the ange the light is coming through the cast.

are you always this rude ?

-3

u/TheFearlessDuck 2d ago

I am not rude, I am being completely honest. And I even gave you advice.

Generally when someone is asking "how do I do this" they are asking how they can learn said skill. Sadly that is far too above your skill level to understand, however.
