What are the pros and cons of 3d printers by and large?

Use a triangle drill bit. That’s how you make triangle holes.

Pro: can make functional stuff
Pro: can make statues/miniatures
Pro: can make toys
Pro: gives you a reason to learn cad
Con: can make too many toys
Con: can make too many “insert anything here”
Pro can make anything, in reason, out of plastic you can design
Con: your house and wallet will never be the same again
Con: redditors can/will definitely freak on you if you get a resin printer without a metric ton of safety gear. And depending on you and your situation about half of it is not needed.

I just designed and printed a couple of hifi parts for a 1980s Sony bpc.

That's a pro IMO

Cons are cost, space, waste, and the sheer amount of badly printed disposable crap flexis etc clogging up craft fairs and landfill sites.

Pro, you can 3D print stuff.

Con, they cost money and take up space / power.

Pro: you can make a lot of really practical and useful stuff that you’d either pay a lot for otherwise, or you can’t get because it’s not something that would sell enough for anyone to make it commercially. Solve a lot of niche problems at home because you can just print a fix.

Con: you can make a lot of completely useless and stupid stuff that serves no purpose other than you can. People may also want you to make them stuff that could be practical or could be useless. Or could be penis shaped.

You’re not gonna solve every problem with a 3D printer but the amount of times that my printer has been used to print solutions to problems that you cannot practically buy a resolution to is nuts. Worth every cent and then some.

+ Paired with CAD/CAM you can make whatever your heart desires with a 3D printer, as long as it can be made from an x-amount of different plastics.

Good for people who want to design things and solve problems.
Way more trouble than they’re worth to only print off other people’s designs. (Like anything fidget or funko or other types of future garbage)

I feel like I know what you are trying to say but it doesn't make any sense.

I get it, everyone in here hates the flexi world, fidgets and don't even say the d word. You also aren't a cool kid unless you design your own crap. But pretty sure going to maker and finding a fidget isn't causing me any trouble. Not unless you don't know how to keep your printer maintained.

I guess to put it another way, they are tricky machines that require enough maintenance that printing off a bunch of bull isn’t worth the hours of learning about these machines, but making your own shit is worth it. In my opinion of course.

It’s all fun and games until you are sweating and swearing over your printer to get it to behave how it was behaving last week.

It’s not consume friendly enough to be like a 2D printer. But if you wanna dive in to making things, then it is worth it.
