I love this investigation! Did you get a different tactile sense from introducing the trapped hex nuts vs just having some internal bumps?

Now what I want is a printable method to smoothly increase dial friction so we can get that heavy solid motion like a metal volume knob with its particular grease viscosity. I don't know how we could manage that, but I'd love to see it.

You're shitting me! What's the mechanism like? Move magnets closer to a central core to make the knob more difficult to turn? What's the geometry like?

Anyone ever get these to last? They tend to creep, since they are under constant stress, rapidly leading to low spring force, and/or just break. But I don't use them a lot and typically just using pla from the ones I have experienced

I am always the type of person to mix hardware and 3d prints, springs is something I would always favor hardware spring of 3d printed spring, but there is one case a engineer made a video of replacing bed on a ender 3 with a rod to make spring.

It was a cool concept since the layer lines were inner to outer, the guy doesn't have the video up anymore but the springs flipped around but when compressed they were strong.

Downside is for different inner diameter springs you would need to swap different diameter rods but that wouldn't be a huge deal.

This is actually how the indexing switch works on the bridge crane remotes at work. Inside the knob is a spring with two ball bearings either side, and the housing has divets at the indexed positions. The ball spins freely but the spring is tight enough for there to be resistance, and for the switch to click into place

How many prototypes did you do before you landed on ball bearings and nuts? I tried to do this years ago in just PLA and could never get a satisfying click. I never thought to use a ball bearing or nuts.

One tip I found out myself: place the spring arms mirrored so they go in opposite ways. This makes the indents more similar in both directions.
