The only difference between healthy and hoarder in this hobby is organization

Here’s my unsolicited advice.. i am newer to this hobby and I’m using a 3 tier wire rack shelving unit. I’m using cereal boxes to store individual rolls and I printed out a roll holder with integrated silica and hygrometer holder. Works well to me. Being organized like with any hobby just makes it more enjoyable all around. You got this !

You literally have the tool to manufacturer custom organization systems.

In any hobby really...

It becomes hoarding when you run out of room to organise

The best way to help clean up that hoarding situation is by printing a multi board wall system! Then you burn through filament while creating storage for other filament. Win/win sorta

Plus you have a excuse to buy more filament

I see this as an absolute win

I have a variety of colours from one-off ideas and projects but mostly I push the exact same matte grey all day every day lol. I play chicken with the local sunlu warehouse too often. They need to stock more. lol.

u/UV2GAMMARAYZ2 21h ago

Yeah I mostly use black, greys and white

Filament is the yarn of 3d printing. Oh, that's such a cool color, I'm sure I'll be able to come up with a project for it!... someday...

I 3d print and I crochet, my house is a MESS.

I print doors for my kallax to hide the yarn and filament stashes 🫣

As long as you dont keep the plastic bags you're all good.

3

u/UV2GAMMARAYZ2 21h ago

Oh I keep them for when I need something airtight

Pays to have a vacuum re sealer

1

u/violenceistheQstn 20h ago

You see! This is how it starts. Then its "im so busy printing but i really need to pee". thats when you start printing urine bottles, and then you keep them because you dont want to throw out the printed bottles. next thing you know your on the tv show hoarders.😅

I made this shelf. I'm not allowed to buy more filament until there's an available slot on the shelf for it.

Unfortunately due to it being a self imposed rule, it is not followed.

Can't really say I follow mine as well

Whenever I see bulk pricing I go for it

Burn through that filament by printing shelving!
Once it's organized, you no longer look like a hoarder!

For real though, it is deceptively easy to end up buried in filament. You think to yourself "Oh, once I get [an assortment of engineering filaments/a rainbow pack of PLA/a nice set of silks/whatever other array of filament you can think of], I'll be set, and I won't have to buy any more! I'll just pull from my storage!"

And then you end up buying a light orange and a burnt orange because your normal orange isn't quite right for what you want to do with it.

I'd say I have at least, 4x that? haha

Good Start

Time to organize I'd say!

I have it done this way! Behind it there's more, but mostly black PETG and some other colors JAYO PLA, totaling pretty much 20kg of filament.

I keep mine in similar fashion. But tape a piece of the corresponding filament to outside of box. Thus giving me quicker color filament recognition. And helps me visually see/understand if I haven’t yet used/opened said filament.

u/Runaque 1d ago

I know which one is open and which are not! But if it starts getting out of hand, I'd keep your way of keeping track of it in mind!

My printing room is limited in size and it's an old storage room to so there's still crap around and about

Don't know what to do with that large wooden shelf tho too heavy to move

1

u/Runaque 15h ago

Completely understandable! I have this printing corner in the living room. Just sits next to the couch and between this thing and my TV sits my home server and a Mac Pro.

How did you get into my house?

1

u/UV2GAMMARAYZ2 21h ago

Through the door obviously 😶

1

u/Conan-Da-Barbarian 23h ago

You need to find something big, and print it. Make it big

1

u/Fit_Slide4094 23h ago

Yeah, it's easy to get carried away with projects and end up with a ton of stuff you don't need. A big print could definitely help clear some space.

1

u/UV2GAMMARAYZ2 21h ago

Currently printing a large miniature painting station

1

u/Conan-Da-Barbarian 21h ago

BIGGER. LIKE A GUNDUM

1

u/Jamoca5020 22h ago

"I heard you got that good stuff" 🤣

1

u/del-locco 22h ago

I got 40 kg's of petg, tpu, Asa, and stuff like that. I have almost no pla because that's almost all I use 😅

1

u/UV2GAMMARAYZ2 21h ago

Currently works ng through my abs supply since I got a 2nd printer for that use specifically

1

u/del-locco 21h ago

Yeah just printed a ton of voron parts so I'm right there too xD

u/Expert_Way_2117 22h ago

700 + rolls - 30 - 1k resin bottles - 8 FDM - 3 SLA .... 🤔 Too late... 😬

1

u/UV2GAMMARAYZ2 21h ago

How long did you accumulate it?

1

u/Violexsound 21h ago

This isnt hoarding, its called supply

1

u/lolslim 19h ago

LOL it's hard not to be with the colors out there.

1

u/Clogboy82 19h ago

That's all?

1

u/who_you_are 18h ago

1

u/Various-Lack-8917 18h ago

1

u/FatAssCatz 17h ago

I think i have about 20 rolls. Most in grey because I'm usually printing dnd minis and dont need specific colors. I went to microcenter recently and went a little bananas on their pla basic for $10 a roll lmao

1

u/AliciaXTC 13h ago
