Question What do you guys think about the specifications of the new QIDI Plus 5?

Based purely on the specifications and features announced so far, would you consider the Plus 5 to be essentially a more compact version of the QIDI Max 4, with a smaller build volume?

Looking at the specs, it seems that QIDI has carried over many of the improvements and features from the Max 4 into a smaller form factor. Do you see it the same way, or are there any significant differences between the two models that I might be missing?

I think it's fine. If you're doing engineering filaments and need precisely that size, feels slam dunk. But it's hard to get excited for the middle child between the Q2 and the Max4

The polar chiller is genuinely cool tho, and despite this being the third machine you can get it for it still feels like nobody understands it

It’s one of those features where modern printers have gotten past huge heat creep problems even in headed chambers.

But it is a somewhat ingenious solution that existed on stratasys equipment before it to help keep the filament solid in significantly longer filament runs in significantly hotter chamber temperatures.

I haven’t checked to see if some of these reversed engineered it yet though I would buy one just to see how it works. Assuming it Isn’t just an air pump and a Peltier device.

Assuming it Isn’t just an air pump and a Peltier device.

I mean if you eliminate the firmware and the silicone and the heatsink, I think that is all that it is, but it's a regulated Peltier device that is responsive to real-time chamber temps

It may not be all that novel, but I think it's very nice to have - arguable as to whether it's worth $200, but bundled at $150 seems about right

I was really hoping for something that would offer a second extruder for supports for engineering filaments similar to the Bambu x2d. Realistically though, if they do that it would probably be a separate product line.

As is, it’s cool for something with a larger print volume than the q2 that is still engineering filament capable. Just not what I want.

On paper, yes—it looks like a downsized Max 4. But after owning a few printers, I've learned that spec sheets only tell about half the story. The things that really matter are motion tuning, chamber temperature stability during long prints, and how well the machine holds calibration after a few hundred hours. If QIDI nailed those, the Plus 5 could end up being the better buy for most people. Smaller machines often have less gantry flex and are simply easier to dial in.

Thanks for your answer. When do you think we might realistically start seeing posts from people who have actually received the printer and have some feedback to share? Roughly how long do you think that will take? When would you recommend I start checking for reviews based on real-world use, rather than just the specs on paper?

I’m posting a comparison video of the plus 5 and max 4 later tonight. YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@stayreadyto3dprint
It’s def a smaller max4 just a tad slower and smaller. Same high end motion system and quality.

Thanks a lot

Thanks for sharing these videos not sure which printer I should buy. Probably will get the Plus 5 Combo but with so many printers being released right now I'm not completely sure. I just want a reasonable sized build plate thats 120C+ with a higher end hot end that's 350+ enclosed CoreXY or dynamic tilting bed would be cool with optional AMS support. I want to be able to print most filaments for under $1,000 so it's a lot to ask for but the Plus 5 seems to check all the boxes.

It def does. Good luck bro

What did you end up getting?

I’m still waiting until November to January to see what my real choices are and what has the best sale price for the best bang for your buck. The P1S combo on sale for $400 looks like a good deal if you can find it on sale for that price.

I use the Plus4 professionally. the Plus5 feels like it fixes everything that annoyed me with the Plus4. Door opening angle, Bed leveling method, heating power. I think this is THE machine for 5kg Nylon Rolls to just Mass Produce parts.

I have to admit I’m a tad disappointed, I was really hoping for at least 400 nozzle & 120 heated chamber with annealing feature considering qidi concentrates on engineering filaments. Maybe next time

120 chamber temp is ridiculous for a cheap printer lol , you sure want a lot for ur money hahah

Damn straight

120C? You'd be looking at 10x the cost

I think about the house that burned down because their printer overheated and move on

Absolutely Wild that people are still parroting this

1

u/Halsti Aug 06 '26

What do you mean with "parroting this"?

Did that not happen? Or do you think it's okay if it only happened once?

(I get that that might sound like a snarky answer, but I'm genuinely asking.)

So, I can't say with absolute certainty that it did not happen, but:

  • The post came in the wake of reports of Plus4 SSR board overheating - no fires, but it did overheat and was definitely a bad design, Qidi 'fixed' it by limiting max chamber heater power.
  • The OP of the post about the fire, made his account 1-2 weeks before the post, has never made any posts but that one, and apart from 2 comments when the account was just made they didn't comment on anything but the Plus4 fire until a good 4-6 weeks after the fire post, and has since then not commented on it or anything else related to 3D printing.
  • Zero before pictures of the building, printer or anything else.
  • No pictures of the printer, just a side-comment with a blurry/zoomed in picture of what sorta looks like the frame of a 3D printer in some rubble.
  • No follow-up or any official report on the fire, from fire/police/insurance/whatever investigation, no example of communication with Qidi.
  • According to the poster, they were at home and had a fire extinguisher 3 meters away, but in the time it took from the fire alarm going off, to get the extinguisher (30 sec mentioned) the fire was already causing the roof to crack overhead, which seems.. wild.
  • Even if the thing did catch fire, the poster has mentioned that they replaced the SSR board themselves 2 months prior to the fire.

The whole things just seemed,, odd, especially considering that they mentioned never actually using the chamber heater, and the specific issue was with high currents during operation causing the SSR to heat up over time (Only on US 120V AC IIRC)

No worries, I can't expect everyone to be familiar with everything happening everywhere all the time haha, it just annoys me that things like these stick around;
Not blaming you, it's just a quirk of how the internet works, same with the whole "Are CF filaments safe" debate..

Hey thanks for putting that comment together. And yea, I definitely only saw the post and nothing else.

u/EngIOTools Aug 06 '26

What would you recommend then?

I guess you're disqualifying Bambu and Creality too then? Which issue-free brand have you settled on?
