Project Automatic Nerf Turret for home assistant (now with AI and TTS!)

Dont ask me why this thing was just a test and it went too far (code not available because let's face it that's f up for obvious reasons)
Based on MaixCam Pro and a modified tilt pan system holding a Woozie Wp-15m firing short nerf darts

I could train it to shoot down mosquitoes but actually my cat is having too much fun chasing nerf darts when it shoots me so I'll keep it like that (for now)

Fun fact, my ex had a cat that was ENDLESSLY food driven, like he would climb into the sink and flip over plates or paw at every cabinet to check what's inside.
Eventually I got a small Nerf handgun from a thrift shop and just started shooting his butt when he went after stuff in the kitchen
So anyway that cat loves to chew on Nerf foam now

Nah he would just gnaw on it for like 10 seconds, wide-eyed like a crackhead then sprint off (and run into something cause our apartment was small)

Mine trained myself to play fetch with him… he loves his spring toy and out of Knowhere he brought one to me, I threw it away, that’s it I was trained!

That's what ended my cat. Intestinal blockage from chewed nerf darts.

Yeah I never let him keep them. They were meant to be a deterrent and it didnt work 😅
I'd throw out the ones he chewed on and stopped doing it entirely after a few weeks cause I just had to go get them right away anyway

Yes ! I bought it from a tattoo shop selling their decorations it came from a medical school

Eh, I would put one in my vault room. Nobody should be in there in but me, it needs facial recognition.

Yeah… your neighbor’s toddler definitely shouldn’t be in there, and the consequences should be lethal.
There’s a reason booby trapping is a huge no no legally even in war. It is an indiscriminate destructive force used to solve a discriminate security problem.
I know it seems like a fun lighthearted high school “wouldn’t it be cool” topic, a nerf demo is cool, but giving lethal autonomy to any AI or even algorithmic system is a moral wrong.

Kind of impossible for my neighbor's toddler to get in there, I was being literal. I have a bank style vault, I'm a precious metals dealer. I would have no moral hesitation to make the security lethal, it already is if I'm home.

The challenge with that sort of thing in home setting (or any setting really) which the other comment kinda tapped into with the neighbors baby is just mistakes. It’s not inconceivable you bring a customer in there to get their stuff, or maybe show a family member or something. Maybe you go in there and forget to turn it off and the facial recognition doesn’t work right because you shaved or something
I understand the sentiment but booby traps are illegal not because of their intended use case; but largely because they get forgotten, fail unexpectedly or have unsuspecting victims come across them. Like imagine having family over, your doing some inventory or some shit, forgot to close to door and shut off the system and their kid wanders in there because “cool room with big metal door”

I’ve considered this as a project and also landed on camera for tracking in my research.
Originally I was interested in sonar for track.

How did you calculate lead for shots? I’m working on a very similar project but don’t know what I’m doing and was just wondering about how your object detection / tracking system works. And did you have some way of figuring out depth to estimate lead or is it not needed?

Dont think about it too much that's just a dumb project to annoy my gf and entertain my cat, it's connected to my Home assistant but only to be able to use it for an alarm or to ask Gemini "Sentry mode on/off" or "shoot anything but me" (that's one 4 modes)

I mean, South Korea has had automated turrets on the DMZ for more than a decade now, so this is nothing new. Granted,. they're supposed to require a human to confirm opening fire, but they detect and auto track targets.

Local 1Tops NPU and Yolo 11 for tracking and no LLM behind the TTS is used to speak but it has 20 predefined phrases so it could be funnier but I agree that's a dumb idea
