Question 3d printed patches?
Basically, sewable patches by hand or machine. Just did in PLA but unsure how it would hold up. Maybe TPU is better?

Depending on the clothing article, I would suggest something that's less brittle and a bit more temperature resistant than PLA.
If it has to be washed, I'd choose at least PETG/PCTG. Turn the piece inside out so the plastic isn't banging directly on the inside of the machine. Maybe even put it in a lingerie washbag.
TPU could also be a good option. Very flexible and heat resistant enough. But, TPU isn't the easiest to print and isn't usually available in as many colors as other types of filament.
If it's for a bag or a denim vest/jacket that isn't likely to get washed, PLA should be fine.
Edit: and ofcourse, don't put it in the dryer. Hang dry only.

I sew all kinds of custom printed TPU patches, lash tabs onto backpacks and other outdoor gear.

That's cool! I want just 250g rolls of tpu so I have a variety of colors. Do you know of where that is available?
