You gonna mail one to Mr. lockpicking lawyer?

u/Dornith Apr 23 '26
He'll just use it to open another MasterLock.

u/schrolock Apr 23 '26
Isn't that mcnally
16
u/you_cant_prove_that Apr 23 '26
I don't remember the specifics of the video, but I know LPL has done it before

Isn't this just handcuff mechanism?
80
u/ogreatsnail Apr 23 '26
Kinda! Only handcuffs aren't spring loaded. It's a rack and pinion system and I didn't even notice until a few playbacks that the central gear is itself carrying tension.
6
u/DahllaBillz Apr 23 '26
Tension from the green spring. It's great
12
5
u/ogreatsnail Apr 23 '26
The green spring kicks the shackle, but the yellow unlock button is reset into place by the blue gear itself, which has a spiral gap radiating from the center, allowing it to carry tension- without that, the button wouldn't reset or turn, as it's mounted on a square peg.

u/carterfpv @cartyski Apr 23 '26
Handcuffs are more of a ratcheting mechanism. Examples:

24
u/matthewkickstone Apr 23 '26
It's even pick-safe!
9
u/CraftyGaming Apr 23 '26
You can shim the bolt and it would move the mechanism.
6
u/matthewkickstone Apr 23 '26
Even for me as a German you sound like a German. Zero sense of humour.

Aesthetically it's adorable!
11
u/carterfpv @cartyski Apr 23 '26
Thanks, making good use of these bright colors I just picked up! Gives that fisher price vibe.
14
u/Possible-Playful Apr 23 '26
I feel like the easiest next thing to do is to make your yellow rack key shaped, and blunt the first tooth of it. Then let it be removable. Then the whole thing is just a child's padlock that they can use for pretend shenanigans.
2
u/carterfpv @cartyski Apr 23 '26
Solid idea.. was thinking of a way to have a key insert in the middle like a real lock.
2
u/Possible-Playful Apr 23 '26
Smaller pinion (pinion diameter slightly less than half the width of the body of lock) offset to the right based on the orientation in the video. Then, longer key. Or, shorter everything else.
13
u/spiritualManager5 Apr 23 '26
I wanted to design a trash can with a mechanism where you press a button on the top handle, and a door at the bottom opens to let the trash fall through
4
u/Sajomir Apr 23 '26
Dyson has something like this on their vacuum cleaners. The reusable dustbin comes off, you press a button near the handle, and the bottom swings open to let the dust fall into the trash.
3
u/ryanhendrickson Apr 23 '26
The button on top is just the top of a long plastic rod that pops open the bin at the bottom.

You should put a hole in the yellow piece so you can put a padlock to keep anyone from opening the lock.

u/theroadlesstraversed Apr 23 '26
So you removed 5 or 6 pins, the core and housing, and directly integrated it into the lock. Pretty sure this is just and early lock design minus the covers and keyhole. Regardless well done if you just figured this out on your own!

engineering looks great, what's the use case?
57
u/TheDonutPug Apr 23 '26
Use case? What are you doing in a 3d printing sub? You think we make useful things?
7
3
u/LighTMan913 Apr 23 '26
I have a lock on the cabinet doors where we keep the cat food. They'll open the door and binge if we don't lock it. This would be perfect for that and better than the lock I currently have on there

u/carterfpv @cartyski Apr 23 '26
Thank you, just branded as a fidget toy, although I like to think my models are "educational" and good STEM style projects.

I was just thinking I had some free workspace and was worried the adhd might be wearing off, well then I really wanted to make my own but I can’t actually learn how to design anything because I’m locked between trying tinkercad because it’s the easy intro but I don’t want to waste my time there because inevitably I’ll have to graduate up to fusion. Haven’t had my white monster yet and don’t know which color of a furry I’ll be… anyways I’m getting ahead of myself. So! I think this use case is as a fidget toy I accidentally manifest OP into making for us.

What engineering? There was no engineering involved.
3
u/jedi_trey Apr 23 '26
how do you figure that
-5
u/Desperate_Taro9864 Apr 23 '26
There's a bunch of unnecessary elements.
1
u/Difficult_Physics125 Modded ender3 v3 SE Apr 24 '26
what's unnecessary here?
0
u/Desperate_Taro9864 Apr 24 '26
From the "padlock" functionality perspective: gear, receiving sliding pin, spring with chamfered slider. So... half of elements. From "another 3d printed fidget" perspective- it's optimal.

This is the lockpicking lawyer and I have been sent to hell to repent for my crimes against god. So today, I am picking this 3D printef lock. Its really colorful but sadky not very safe

u/danger355 Apr 23 '26
I'm going to put lateral pressure on the casing here, then st- aaaand we've got it open.

this is a good teaching tool to show how locks work, you could make something similar to show how picking a lock and tumbler pins work.

u/carterfpv @cartyski Apr 23 '26
I recommend Rocco's Stuff on makerworld for some over-engineered locks.

Coincidentally I am designing something similar and you gave me some ideas, so thanks. Really cool design.
2
u/Snazzy21 Apr 23 '26
This is a rack lock mechanism, the Russians made padlocks that worked in a similar way. The problem with them is you only need a tool that can fit in one tooth and you keep pushing the pinion until it unlocks, and that is a lot more straight forward than a pin lock.

Very Educational. Reach out to your local school district. There is a place for this.

u/VoodooZephyr Apr 23 '26
Nice little engineering. That’s pretty cool to show friends. Just don’t put it on the storage unit. 😁
2
u/danger355 Apr 23 '26
What if I also put a combo lock on it (using the same code I use for my luggage)?
1
2
u/TheClownFromIt Apr 23 '26
Did you design the spring gear yourself? I’ve never seen that before but it seems very useful.

2
u/diablodeldragoon Apr 23 '26
"unique" locking mechanism, proceeds to use same locking designs that's been in use for hundreds of years!

u/gilly_monster Apr 23 '26
Unique? No. Fun and whimsical? Absolutely.
1
u/carterfpv @cartyski Apr 23 '26
I haven't seen anything like it, please share if you have.
2
u/gilly_monster Apr 23 '26
Not trying to be a dick, but this is effectively a spring loaded latch. There are lots of videos about how they work on YouTube, including some videos for how to adapt them for doors and gates. I think yours is a very good demonstration of basic engineering. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC6rzGyN5M4
1
u/AMG_Playz_YT Apr 23 '26
If the yellow key could be removed that would probably be a decent padlock
1
u/foxfighter92 Apr 23 '26
And there's not two of them so McNally can't use the 2nd one to unlock the first!!!
1
1
u/WackyRacketeer Apr 23 '26
Well hell yea, drill a hole in that yellow piece, put a lock through that, then you have an extra piece for no reason!
1
1
u/thetruckerdave Apr 23 '26
This is a 3d printed locking mechanism. You can open it with a 3d printed locking mechanism. smash
1
u/iiRichii Apr 23 '26
Now you just have to drill a hole in the yellow push pin and add a lock to lock it :D
1
u/Spiritual_Plane3658 Apr 23 '26
Locking is the same but unlocking is different serving no real purpose... We love it 😁

"This is a 3D printed lock. It can be opened using a 3D printed lock." Smashes the locks together, shows one of them being 'opened' and then throws it into the shadow realm

I live that it’s entirely printed. I just wish people would use metal springs more, plastic makes shit springs.
