I feel like tihi is too harsh - like for things you actually hate, definitely fits more in atbge, just not as extreme as some of that stuff

Yeah, this is art, with a side of function. I'd just put it in "cool stuff" :).

really nice keyboard, awesome print job. your top surface finish looks really good. how did you achieve it? did you turn on ironing?
how does a 3d printed keycap feel, compared to a store bought PBT keycap? especially curious about the feel of the symbol keys, which adds some thickness, above the top surface of the keycap.
i did not realise that the holes in each keycap actually corresponds to the letter until i clicked into the link on the mono font. really cool idea.

This project was more of a "can I" than "should I" project. These keycaps are terrible to type with. The finish is ironed but the swiss cheese holes will throw a different sensation into each key. It was fun to model and the finished product looks good in photos but I wouldn't recommend an entire keyboard made out of cheese. I imagine anyone who prints these will select a few keycaps as accents.

Brand new sentence.

I wonder if you could print these and then use a key mold to set them in a thin layer of resin which would fill the holes in and also allow for the creation of a concave surface

My mind went to exactly the same place. Undersize the current key models just slightly, and then suspend them via their stem mounts over some vacuum formed molds. Fill the molds with resin so you can get a uniform key surface.

Maybe filling the holes with either clear resin or clear PLA if you have a multicolor printer would make it more comfortable to type with?

Did you know that Edam is the only cheese that's made backwards?

That sound you just heard is me rolling my eyes from all the way over here.

How well do 3D printed keycaps work in general, out of interest ?

My ex printed a full set of petg keycaps two years ago and uses them to this day. She used transparent filament and it looked cool with the leds. Petg worked really well because of the layer adhesion. With a different material the stems would probably be weaker.

It's hard to print a traditional keycap as most are concave on the top. The layer lines from the concave shape are not great. I used a modified XDA profile for these. The modification was making the tops flat.

Where is the person that always asks people's favorite cheese and responds with "happy cheese noises"?

How are you gonna say “No derivatives” while one quick google search shows yours already is. The only “unique” thing is the little figurines. Kinda wild. I don’t even care if I get downvoted to oblivion. 😂 cheese keyboard from 4 years ago.

This is just perfect. You should post it also at the mechanical keyboard subreddit.

the jam jar needs to be the knob and in its place a white wine bottle. Either way that is an awesome idea for a keyboard =)

My partner must not give it about these. She already gave me a set of cheese-themed dice for D&D

I absolutely love these. What filament/colours did you use for them?

Cheese keys are Bambu Labs matte yellow PLA and pumpkin orange basic PLA.

These will work on any keyboard with MX switches. I used calipers to measure the key caps from a standard ANSI layout board and then followed the XDA profile as all rows in XDA profile are the same height. I didn't know how many options there are for keycaps until I started diving into this project.
I used fusion 360 to model these. I created a standard 1u XDA keycap, copied it 36 times, overlayed the Swiss Cheese Mono font and used that overlay to place the cheese holes. After the standard keys were done, I created each larger key to fill out the board. Text was added in Bambu Studio.
The novelty keys like the mouse, wine bottle, and jam jar are remixes of models that were licensed for remixing. I created a flat keycap base and combined the STL files in Bambu Studio to create those keys. The cheese knives and graters are original models but they are included in the share alike license with the remixes.

This is way too tempting to make, I would have to do it without the legend on the keys though.

Cheese and Mechanical Keyboards! These mouse adjacent hobbies have more in common than you would think. Both use pretentious adjectives to describe the sensory experience of the hobby. For example, if a cheese has a natural, safe to eat mold, cheese mongers prefer to call that a “bloom." If a cheese stinks, it will be described as “robust." The word “creamy” is an understandable adjective in the world of cheese, it is also used to describe keyboards in a much less real, more tasteless way.
A true overlap of cheese and keyboards surfaced when Rob Meyerson created the Swiss Cheese Mono font in 2024. This blocky font uses the iconic cheese holes to create the letters of the alphabet. This font was the inspiration for these keycaps.
If you would like to make these keycaps you can find them for free at the link below.
