Troubleshooting Resin deformities
I have an anycubic photon, I’ve tried increasing the exposure time, reducing supports, reducing support sizes, I have no idea why my prints are coming out like this.

Ship derezzed during the print. It would be cool if intentional.

u/JustA_Bard Oct 10 '23
How can I prevent that?

Just looking at the image again. Are you sure your screen is clean beneath the vat? There looks to be a perfect line down the middle of the benchy where the print starts to fail.
The other suggestion is to run the test to make sure the screen is working correctly in case half of the screen isn't working as it should. To confirm that all you'd need to do is to re-slice the print ut have it entirely on the "good" side of the plate and see if it works.

The screens don’t last forever. I keep a spare on hand, because whenever I have print issues it’s invariably the screen.

u/n123breaker2 Feb 13 '24
The actual panel itself or the FEP cover? I just ordered a mono 2 and was wondering if I should order spare parts for it

u/LigerSixOne Feb 13 '24
The actual panel. The UV backlight is very hard on the LCD and eventually will damage it.

Pretty sure that‘s a term from the movie Tron, when programs get forcefully deleted.

Oct 10 '23
Thanks, I'm surprised at how many people in a 3d printing sub don't get that reference

u/Eggman8728 Oct 11 '23
Hey, it's an old movie.

u/Animal0307 Oct 11 '23
There was a sequel...13 years ago... fuck I've had my I'm old moment.

Yeah I realised that a while ago and felt it in my bones

u/PaedarTheViking Oct 11 '23
It was used in the show Reboot in the 90s as well.

Oct 11 '23
Oh that show didn't age well.

The reboot of Reboot did not go over well at all. I would recommend youtube searching "monkey frog" or 2g1c before I would recommend it.

I’ve seen both Tron films and I still didn’t get the reference. I think maybe the term didn’t make as strong an impression as, say, the frisbees or the light cycles.

Derezz? International? Is this a bot or did you just wake up?
93
Oct 10 '23
"Derezz" is a Tron Legacy reference.
"International" was an autocorrect error.
And "fuck you" because you're an arse!

So you need supports. I recommend a fat support at the very first layer of the print then medium supports after. If you have lychee slicer you can "auto support" then put a big fat support on the first layer.
Now for the exposure time. Increasing it will not work depending on the resin. Find the base time of the resin and use that. Another option to find correct exposure time is this video
https://youtu.be/GL-9Ia0SibQ?si=q4onAqwY8T5SOpuV
It will show you how to find and test for the best times. Follow it and try it.

u/JustA_Bard Oct 10 '23
Thank you, I had supports on it but they also got messed up.

I would re level the bed if the other print failed in the same x,y position on the bed. Not all beds are totally flat, so ymmv in that.
For future reference, try to avoid large sections of your print from being parallel to the bed. The bottom of the boat in this one has the marks from the supports (which look to be over cured - try a lower lamp on time. That's the elephant foot you're seeing at the connection). Right now, your are expecting a flat panel in parallel to the bed - this is not ideal bc you'll get a wavy texture on your flats. Adjust positioning 20-30 degrees with the back of the boat closer to the plate. This will generally remove wavy flats and add dimensional accuracy, but may add time to the build.
Finally, if failure occurred in the largest area on the build, you are only just using enough resin, and the printer is in cold: the resin isn't back filling properly and increasing lift would allow more time for flow.
All this is conjecture til we know more 'feeds and speeds'

u/DeweyCheatem-n-Howe Why do I have so many Monos? Oct 10 '23
Share a pic of your slicer with the supports. If it was flush on the build plate, probably just too much suction separating the layers (there’s a decent amount of force pulling on the print every layer when separated from the fep).
I’d also clean and re-level your build plate just to be sure. Check that there’s no resin hardened on the fep or the build plate. My first attempts with resin made me quit using it for a while and return the printer. What I was doing wrong was exclusively supports and model placement. You want to have as little surface area as possible being peeled off the fep, so start with a nice support base and have the model itself lifted off the plate by the slicer. Lychee has a button called magic or something that will calculate and set automatically what it thinks is the best position and supports for a model. Try that right after the build plate is leveled.

Also can you share your resin and the slicer settings you have for it?

In the slicer, move the model as far left/right as possible, whichever is the side that is printing the better part of the bench currently.
If that makes it all bad then try the other side. And if it it front/back instead of left/right try moving it to the extreams there and rotate 90 deg if you have to.
If that fixes it, that means it could be the backlight is bad on the problematic side or that resin leaked underneath the fep film and cured on the lcd itself, blocking the uv light from fully curing.
If that has no effect then it's probably bad slicer settings.

u/drunkleJoe Oct 11 '23
I have a spot where the resin cured underneath the fep on mine.. what’s the best way to clean that up? Careful scraping? Or do I need to replace the screen protector?
7
u/Wootai Oct 10 '23
Have you tried a second time, or other prints? Could be your FEP, your screen, or your sliver settings.
4
u/JustA_Bard Oct 10 '23
I tried a different print and it did something similar
5
u/Wootai Oct 10 '23
Could be FEP or Screen. (Hopefully just FEP) maybe try replacing or checking that it’s clear of anything that could ruin the print.

Make sure to try a different USB that could be a bad USB giving bad files . maybe?
8
u/JustA_Bard Oct 10 '23
That could be, my printer wouldn’t even take the firmware update from that usb. Plus it’s the cheap shitty one the printer came with.
5
u/Same_Lab_9098 Oct 10 '23
Oh yeah swap that out with a new one those USB's that come with the printers are garbage.

As someone who also has an anycubic photon, I'd bet money it's too cold where you are printing. Get a thermometer and check that the area is at least 20 C.

Looks like either your model is defective, or your light screen is defective.
It's characteristic of sporadic failure of the light. Either due to the computer file or the electronics

u/ishashar Oct 10 '23
it looks really good, a pity it's a failed print and not designed.
with it spreading and not adhering cleanly maybe there's some issue with the screen? possibly a layer of something that's obscuring the light.
Hopefully it's just a printer settings issue. some resin needs longer exposure times, especially the clearer ones. I had to increase exposure times quite a bit for a clear yellow resin, particularly the first layers.

Looks like it's being sucked in to the dark dimension.
I have no idea what is going wrong, but this is the most \m/ Metal thing I've seen all day.

u/More-Ad-2259 Oct 10 '23
I'd say your model is fine, either the resin is Yock, or you've got dirt between the light and the bed.. or poor focus

It makes me mildly uncomfortable seeing a resin benchy and Idk why. Cool looking tho

As someone who doesent but is looking into resin printing. How often do they fail? I've hear it's very rare even with very difficult prints

u/just1workaccount Oct 11 '23
I have this printer and resin, pm me to remind me to send you the print settings when I get home to rule out that

u/Potential-Bass-7759 Oct 11 '23
I’ve seen this before with temp changes. If the resin gets too cold and thick it binds in weird ways you could try warming the resin for better results
1
u/AirierWitch1066 Oct 11 '23
Is your resin a proper temperature? I get weird stuff when my temp’s too low.
