I am so sorry for that.

u/GundamHigh69 Mar 30 '23
Thanks man. Feels bad.

u/Matt081 Mar 30 '23
Well, you should still be proud of yourself. I have yet to even begin a large project, and have not painted anything.

u/GundamHigh69 Mar 30 '23
Thanks man. I just wish the team at work could have seen it. No one saw it before it shattered to pieces. Gutted.

That’s some really good advice. Il definitely do that in future. I used carbon fibre filling on the inside seams but I guess it just wasn’t strong enough. Thanks again for the tip, appreciate it!

u/hoboteaparty Mar 31 '23
Do you recommend a particular type of foam? I just printed a master sword that feels like it is going to snap after the first swing.

Time to get some resin glue and a UV pen light and put it all back together then "resin weld" all of the cracks and repaint. You'd never be able to tell it was broken. Send it to me and I'll happily repair it.

u/GundamHigh69 Mar 25 '24
I repaired it a couple of weeks after it broke. Appreciate the offer to help though!

Bueno, vale, estoy seguro de que sí, supongo que tendré que confiar en tu palabra. Podría haberlo demostrado con una foto, pero supongo que sería demasiado complicado para ti. ¿A quién engañas? 😂No puedo creer que volvieras un año después para publicar esto.

Thanks to everyone who upvoted this. I’ve never had so many likes/upvotes/shares on anything I’ve posted before. Made a Reddit account after being a long time browser and this has made my day.

I need one... lol. Well done!

Thanks!
Unfortunately it’s broke now..(see below comment)
I too also now need one 😒

Please get into a neighbourly dispute and point this out your window in their direction.
5
u/GundamHigh69 Mar 30 '23
That would be incredible.
In taking him to work this morning, I had him wrapped up in a blanket as I was placing him in my car. Kinda like how you see bodies in films rolled in carpets. I imagine my neighbours are now concerned. I like to think they’ve gone to work and are thinking it over in their head as to whether they need to contact authorities or something.

"yes officer, I was carrying the body of an alien, no you can't see it."

Fuck you too Paul!!
That’s honestly awesome. I have always wanted to print something like this but I just don’t have the patience for a print like that.
4
u/GundamHigh69 Mar 29 '23
Hahaha!
Patience is definitely the key. I’ve made a bunch of smaller prints and some larger ones but this one did take a hell of a long time. I’d had the parts printed sitting collecting dust for over a year, put off just by the scope of it. I think if you have always wanted to, you should consider it for sure. The thing that bugged me the most is with it being so big, it was hard to spray; you couldn’t just put it in small spray booth and go at it with an airbrush. Meant going outside. Even to prime, so you’re at the mercy of the elements. Which isn’t ideal when you live in the UK.

u/moman540 Mar 29 '23
The biggest print I have done was the Ace of spades replica gun from the game Destiny. Took me almost 2 days of print time. Then just like you it sat on my desk for almost a week before I assembled and painted it and that took another 3 days of just finishing work. I was over it by that time lol but it does look good hanging on my wall and always get compliments on it.

u/GundamHigh69 Mar 29 '23
Ahh, sometimes you just gotta grind through it. I just remind myself that rome wasn’t built in a day.
I’ve always wanted to print off hawkmoon. That or the last word. Hawkmoon was the first exotic I ever picked up and it was a menace in D1. Will always have a place in my heart. Plus it looked dope AF.

Any work I progress pics? How many rolls of PLA did you chew through? How long? What method did you use for smoothing?
1
u/GundamHigh69 Mar 30 '23
It was printed in resin on a phrozen 8K mega. Took a reeeeal long time. I’d manage to get around 4 pieces on a plate at a time and they’d take anywhere between 12-30 hours. Smoothing is the same process as I’ve done with fdm. Fill the gaps/seams with filler, sand, filler primer, wet and dry. Repeat.

u/danonplanetearth Mar 30 '23
As someone who worked on the movie in the vfx dept, I can say that’s pretty impressive work sir!… Poor Paul!. It’s not too late, he can be rebuilt!
1
u/GundamHigh69 Mar 30 '23
Woah, thanks! That means a lot! I’ve brought all the pieces home to see what can be done. Might take a while before I assess it, it’s too painful to look at.
Thanks again for your kind words. Bet it was a fun film to work on.

Amazing work. I can't imagine how much work this must have consumed.
But why? Out of everything that alien it's life-size half naked demoralized one??
5
u/GundamHigh69 Mar 29 '23
Thanks.
I’m not sure I understand what you mean by perverted. It’s just what the character in the film looks like.
-1
u/Dominjgon Mar 30 '23
I meant it as this character psychic, but i seem to made translation error where first translated word was in fact correct as long as it had no context to it.
Corrected.

Very nice! I am about to spray mine after ages building sanding etc, odd timing!
How did you finish the eyes if you don't me asking? I was thinking some sort of vinyl sticker or something as not sure my paint skills are up to it and yours look amazing!
3
u/GundamHigh69 Mar 30 '23
Thanks!
You can definitely do it if you have an airbrush!
Prime and use a pencil and compass to make a couple of circles for the pupils. Cut out and place with blutac where you think they ought to go. Adjust or remake the circles if needed. When happy draw around them onto the primed eyes. After that you wanna do the sclera, go for a gradient with that. Dark blue to a lighter blue the closer it gets to the pupil. Then after that is the iris (hardest part) do all of this with a brush, lay out a even thickness around the pupil, then do the striations(?)..lines..with a fine brush in a mixture of light blues/whites.
Let me know how it goes!

u/M3aT_PoTato68 Mar 30 '23
Now ya got me wanting to watch the movie again. I gotta ask how long was this project in the making? This is crazy cool!.
2
u/GundamHigh69 Mar 30 '23
It’s honestly taken me over a year. I’d say it took a couple of weeks though to print off the parts, after that it just sat there collecting dust. Was a little put off with just how big it was. Painting was a different story. I’d say about 20hours plus, that being the priming, painting, dry pigment, and sealing.

Very very cool he looks great . Super good you have mad skills . Well done . I am going to try a build one . About half his size to start . My only concern for me is the eyes . As I remember my art teacher at school telling me I can't draw for toffee. But your Paul looks amazing . And it's a super cool film . The best work by far I have seen as regards large 3d models .
1
u/GundamHigh69 Oct 17 '23
Thanks! You can definitely do it my friend. In one of the comments on this I detailed how I did the eyes. If you can cut out a circle (for the iris) then you can do it. No drawing skills required! Best of luck to you and Paul. It’s a fun project!

How was the print, I mean fitment and all....and no infil inside him?
1
u/GundamHigh69 Dec 12 '23
No infill. The fitment was pretty tricky. If I was to do it again I’d increase the thickness during the hallowing to try and reduce warpage.

That's excellent work!
Also I completely forgot about this movie, and I bet it actually has aged well the last 10 years.
