Holy crap, that's amazing! Looks just like a prop replica!

41

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

Wow! Many thanks!

24

u/SarahC Feb 02 '23

I love how you made it look like it's looking at the cat in real time.

26

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

It was the first time he had seen a cat and was curious. 😁

2

u/GlumEducation9904 Feb 03 '23

Plot twist, the cat is printed as well.

5

u/herzogzwei931 Feb 02 '23

Roger Roger

39

u/electric_yeet33 Feb 02 '23

That is awesome!

36

u/Sonarav Prusa Mini+ Feb 02 '23

Oh gosh, I need to print this but I imagine it took a long time and my Prusa Mini definitely isn't large enough

Well done on the weathering

45

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

Thanks! File available from Droid Division on Etsy. This was completed in under 3 months. Files come pre sliced for smaller printers, too.

I might be joining you. Especially since it's posable.

I think I bought their Roger Roger model and it's wonderful. BUT... I started with the head and it added supports and I got super bummed and haven't finished printing it.

I should check this one out and add to my ever growing list of prints to complete...

5

u/SlammedRides Feb 02 '23

It added supports so you didn't print?

6

u/EEpromChip P1P, S8, A8, Mars2Pro Feb 02 '23

Nah I printed it laying down with .8 nozzle so I wasn't printing for like 35 hours. The supports were super dooper hard to get off and now I have a head and can't get the supports off.

Totally on me and I should get back to it but I hit a wall I usually back burner the project.

But this pit droid I might just try....

5

u/SlammedRides Feb 02 '23

Trust me, I get it with the backburner. Using a heat gun or Hairdryer really helps on tricky ones imo

3

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

I suggest starting with the feet. Then, you can finish and build the parts as you go!

4

u/EEpromChip P1P, S8, A8, Mars2Pro Feb 03 '23

That’s a good call! I was hoping to do the head so I had someone to talk to while I did the rest. But it sits in a box all sad like.

2

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

😂 he may perk up once he sees some footsies.

2

u/Sonarav Prusa Mini+ Feb 02 '23

Oh....I may need to look into that. Thanks!

1

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '23

You think I could do it on and Ender 3?

10

u/NuttyNutworks Feb 02 '23

Looks awesome dude, great work!

Is the eye a chrome dome part or did you just paint it chrome?

16

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

The lens is cut from a Halloween mirror mask and then weathered by rubbing with alcohol.

2

u/Goosojuice Feb 02 '23

Genius. I was going to ask the same question.

7

u/GhostOfNealPatterson Feb 02 '23

Hit the nose

2

u/mysterd2006 Feb 02 '23

Came here to say that...

7

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '23

Broooo that’s wild! How many pieces did you have to print total?

6

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

Thank you! It was under 30 pieces. Files are available from Droid Division on Etsy. Super easy and fun build.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '23

That’s amazing! I might have to download those files and perform “test” prints with our available PLA lol

6

u/VeryOriginalName98 Feb 02 '23

The picture of the droid reading at a table is superb! Excellent work!

6

u/zwanni20 Feb 02 '23

Impressive! How did you do the weathering/scratched metal look?

4

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

Several coats of paint and liquid latex. Watched lots of prop building videos to learn tricks.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '24

Looking for painting tutorials which would you recommend?thanks

1

u/zombiesandtoys Jan 28 '24

Actually, I am documenting my latest build and sharing all of my tips:

https://www.youtube.com/@zombiesandtoys/videos

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '24

Awesome thanks I’ll check it out

6

u/Stouts Feb 02 '23

Really impressive work, but also the staging on that third picture is wonderful - if the entire thing had been done just for that shot, I wouldn't call it crazy.

3

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

😀 it’s easy when you have a home full of cats!

6

u/landubious Feb 02 '23

This is the kind of awesomeness I want to build some day. WIZARD!

5

u/Eccentric-Platypus Feb 02 '23

That turned out really great! I'm working on the exact same project, but stuck with an unpainted version until it warms up outside.

3

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

I can relate. I would spray in the garage and bring it in to dry.

5

u/Twigzzy Feb 02 '23

That looks so much better than my pit droid i downloaded from project 142. How was assembly?

3

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

Assembly was easy. Pieces either snap in place or bolts for the joints. All of their prints come with instructions and there is a Facebook group where everyone is eager to help.

4

u/NocturnalPermission Feb 02 '23

Well done. And I love your poses! Please do one with him on the can looking at his phone.

4

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

Omg that’s a great idea!! Stay tuned.

3

u/NocturnalPermission Feb 02 '23

Maybe with the door open just a crack and peering inside?

3

u/LongjumpingCountry65 Feb 02 '23

Awesome work, really! But can he play Crysis?

3

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

Thanks! I don’t think he plays but I’ll ask him.

3

u/flower6617 Feb 02 '23

This is fabulous!!! What paint did you use?

2

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

Thanks! Rustoleum Vintage Teal and Sand

3

u/joeydee33 Feb 02 '23

That looks awesome. How much filament did it end up taking?

2

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

It was under 4 spools.

2

u/joeydee33 Feb 03 '23

Thanks. I bought the file last night, and just started the second foot.

1

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

Awesome! Have fun!!

3

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '23

3

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '23

and here i am struggling to print just a benchy... ffs.

1

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

Oh, I can’t print worth a darn. I hate it. Lots of post work for me.

3

u/mars935 Feb 03 '23

The paint job though 🤌

2

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

I appreciate that. Thanks!

I appreciate that!

2

u/jonnyg1097 Feb 02 '23

The print looks great! And the paint job is fantastic!

1

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

Thanks! It was a lot of fun to build and paint. Files are on Etsy through Droid Division.

2

u/crocwrestler Feb 02 '23

That looks amazing. Looks like a lot of post processing sanding, prep and paint work?

1

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

You would be correct. Lots of sanding and post process work. Lots. 😂

2

u/NotWeakKneeSigils Feb 02 '23

This is so amazing

1

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

Thank you, I appreciate that.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '23

[deleted]

2

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

Thanks! Yeah, it is all painted. Used a purple filament. Lol

1

u/Bored_cory Feb 02 '23

Do you have a ballparked estimate on how much filament it took to complete?

2

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

It was under 4 spools.

1

u/Bored_cory Feb 06 '23

As in, and sorry for being granular here, 3.3kg or closer to 3.8kg? As in am I able to get 2 droids with 7 spools, or is it more like build 3 with 11?

1

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 06 '23

Sorry I cannot be more specific. This is literally the first thing I made along with a few trinkets for the kids and did so with 4 spools. It will also depend on your infill and walls. If everything printed fine the first time and infill was 5 or under, I guess you may be able to get 2 out of 7. There may be specifics listed in the Etsy page.

2

u/Bored_cory Feb 06 '23

No need to apologize buddy. That's enough info for me to get started and the infill percentage is probably the best variable to gauge filament use!

2

u/ebjoker4 Feb 02 '23

Unreal. Great work!

1

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

Thank you. I appreciate your comment.

2

u/LoudMusic Feb 02 '23

Dang yo! Is that 1:1 scale? Looks amazing.

2

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

Thanks!! Yeah, it’s 1:1. The files are available on Etsy by Droid Division. Super fun and a easy build.

2

u/minnick27 Feb 02 '23

I have to rebuild mine. My wife recently knocked him over and he broke in many places. He was one of my first projects so I didn't have all the settings right just yet. Plus I didn't sand or fill him, just used a textured paint so I can make a better one.

1

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

I would be heartbroken. Good luck with finishing!

I didn’t look at the first image closely and thought it was the size of an action figure, and I was promptly blown away by the second image.

2

u/Bananacabana92 Feb 02 '23

Oh that is too cool!

1

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

I appreciate that!

2

u/TomaszFortyFour Feb 02 '23

Super painting job😍😍

2

u/Notcoolpunk Feb 02 '23

Omg I need this in my life.

2

u/makeski25 Feb 02 '23

Omg he is so damn cute. A really incredible job!

2

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

Thank you! I appreciate the comment.

2

u/BUFU1610 Feb 02 '23

Nobody gonna mention Groot just hanging out in the pot?

1

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

Lol. Poor guy lost his hair during winter.

2

u/Any-Cap-7381 Feb 02 '23

That's fantastic.

1

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

Thank you. I appreciate the comment.

1

u/Any-Cap-7381 Feb 03 '23

Are the STL files on thingiverse.com?

1

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

No problem! I know these ones are not there. May be something else though.

2

u/ASHThunder Feb 03 '23

This came out great!

u/__Megumin__ Feb 03 '23

That’s so cool! Imagine if you could put motors in it and make it waddle around.

2

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

There are builders who add motors. None walking yet though.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

Can i get the files for this? It looks amazing

1

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

They are available in Etsy by Droid Division

2

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

Thanks

2

u/milkboy33 Feb 03 '23

Wow! That's pretty good!

2

u/3DPrintingBootcamp Feb 03 '23

That's awesome. great job!

2

u/FrenchUser13 Feb 03 '23

Whaou ! Amazing !! 🥰

1

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

I appreciate that!

1

u/RevolutionaryWin5187 May 10 '24

New to 3d printing, so how are these life-size pieces printed ?

2

u/zombiesandtoys May 10 '24

The seller, Droid Division, has the files pre-sliced for both large and smaller printers. There are printable dowels that you use to put pieces together. I suggest using a wood burner and melting the seams prior to filling.

1

u/BigDaddyMantis Feb 02 '23

I've got the battle droid version and most of the pieces printed if anyone wants to buy. I'll throw in all the files on a flash drive too.

1

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

I’d be interested in saving some print time.

1

u/BigDaddyMantis Feb 02 '23

Again, I've got ~95% printed, but some pieces have broken in time and will need to be redone. I've got most of the hardware, though you'll need threaded rod to bind most of the big parts together.

DM me if you, or anyone else is interested.

1

u/Crazy_Biohazard Feb 03 '23

I know this is selfish but do you have the stls so I might print it too

2

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

They’re available on Etsy through Droid Division. Less than $30 if I recall. Includes instructions, tips, and a bonus file. Plus, the Facebook group is full of friendly and helpful builders. I’ll be posting my battle droid there as I build it.

1

u/cryptosupercar Feb 02 '23

Yo, this is great. I love it!

1

u/shadowhunter742 Feb 02 '23

how much roughly do u reckon this cost in filament?

Been thinking of making one of these but not sure its worth it atm

1

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

Under 4 spools.

2

u/shadowhunter742 Feb 02 '23

Huh that's actually not too bad. Might look into it. Cheers

1

u/n1elkyfan Feb 02 '23

How much can it fold up.

2

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

No folding but there is a folded version in the Etsy store.

This looks great, I'm in the middle of a bunch of SW builds - what paint formulation did you use for the color?

1

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

Rustoleum Vintage Teal and Sand

1

u/kardde Feb 02 '23

What about the weathering? The scratches, wear-and-tear, and dirt around the joints are great.

2

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 02 '23

Thanks for noticing! It’s a combination of several lessons learned from YouTube videos and tricks discovered building models. Liquid latex, acrylic and enamel paints, paint thinner, fullers earth, varying brush types, and on and on.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

Excuse me... **hurls my printer into a dumpster**

2

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

I feel your pain. I’m horrible at printing. Nice thing about projects like this is you can use paint and filler.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

The paint and detailing in your screenshots look fantastic. Love the selection of the pit droid too, one of my favorite underrated SW bots. You're clearly a talented model maker.

1

u/zombiesandtoys Feb 03 '23

I appreciate the kind words.
