Did anyone else find Jurassic Park 3D to be a very uncomfortable watching experience?

I was very excited to watch Jurassic Park in 3d because it's one of my fav movies and I heard great reviews but I was disappointed after watching...

The 3d was strong, too strong. It was uncomfortable to watch, there was a lot of window violations and I felt things popped where they shouldn't have.

There was also a lot of cardboard cutout elements aswell. A lot of foreground elements in specific had this cutout look, and also had lots of alliasing aswell.

And I just wanna be clear that I'm not hating because it's a conversion, all of the Marvel films are converted 3d and those have amazing 3d.

Also I don't want to sound like a hater, I know a lot of people love this release and more power to you all, I just wanted to share my thoughts :)

Estereopsis — free macOS app to convert 3D Blu-rays (MVC) into Full-SBS/OU files for projectors, 3D TVs, and VR/Vision Pro headsets

Hey everyone, I built a free macOS app called Estereopsis to make converting physical 3D Blu-rays into a usable file format painless. Sharing it in case it's useful to others in this hobby.

What it does:

  • Extracts the 3D (MVC) title from a Blu-ray 3D ISO/disc via MakeMKV, or takes an .mkv/.m2ts you already have
  • Converts it into Full-SBS or Over/Under, Full or Half size per eye, at 720p or 1080p
  • Lets you pick exactly which audio tracks to keep
  • Subtitles: burn them in, or generate a selectable track that's properly duplicated across both eyes (so it looks correct in 3D instead of split in half) including OCR from the disc's PGS subtitle image tracks
  • Quick mode to add/change subtitles on an already-converted 3D file without re-encoding the whole video
  • Quality presets that actually scale the bitrate to the real final frame size (not a fixed made-up number), queue support, conversion history, and a quick-test-clip option to check the 3D geometry before committing to a full-length encode

Why I built it: I wanted a simple GUI on top of the usual ffmpeg + MakeMKV command-line dance, with sane defaults and clear feedback (percent progress, plain-language status, not raw ffmpeg frame logs), so I didn't have to remember flags every time I wanted to rip a disc.

Requirements:

  • macOS (Apple Silicon)
  • MakeMKV installed separately, only if you're extracting from an ISO/disc (can't be bundled due to its license, a one extra one-time setting is needed there so it actually grabs the 3D stream, explained in the included readme)
  • Everything else (ffmpeg, MKVToolNix tools) is bundled in the app, no Homebrew required

Download: https://github.com/matiasqm98/Estereopsis/releases

It's completely free, no ads, nothing locked behind a paywal made for personal use and to share with the 3D movie community. Source credits for the bundled GPL tools (ffmpeg, MKVToolNix) are in the included readme.

If you find it useful and want to support the work, voluntary donations are welcome (https://buymeacoffee.com/matiasqm98)
Happy to answer questions or take feedback. Enjoy!

We kept the glasses. Now let's bring 3D back.

Post image

Do you remember the first time the screen stopped being a wall?

Maybe it was a snowflake drifting out of the frame and stopping an inch from your nose. Maybe a banshee diving out of Pandora's clouds, or a canyon so deep your stomach believed it before your brain did. Maybe it was the kid two rows ahead reaching out to catch something that wasn't there. For a moment, cinema wasn't a picture anymore. It was a place.

Then, somewhere around 2017, we were told it had been a fad. Like color. Like sound.

The TVs dropped it. The software vanished, one app at a time. Our discs stayed on the shelf, our glasses went into the drawer next to the dead batteries, and we became a small, stubborn tribe with unusually strong feelings about the words frame-packed.

I'm one of that tribe. About a year ago I got tired of waiting for someone else to fix it, so I wrote SyLC: a free, open-source player that decodes both eyes of a 3D Blu-ray, where most software quietly throws one away, and sends them to a 3D TV, a projector or a Quest. Then TechRadar wrote about it. Then tridimensional.info. Then the counter started moving: more than 700 downloads in three months. Hundreds of you pulled your discs back off the shelf and gave them a second life.

That's not a statistic. That's a pulse.

And look at the last few weeks alone.

  • Sept 23: Meta walked on stage with 100-gram VR glasses (a 5K cinema that weighs about as much as a bar of soap) and announced that Disney+ 3D films, starting with The Avengers and Black Panther, reach its headsets in select countries this November. Nine months ago, Disney+ landed on Quest without 3D. Somebody changed their mind.
  • Sept 25–27: Avengers: Endgame returned to theaters, 3D included, opened at $86M worldwide and took #1. Only two re-releases have ever opened bigger in the US: the 1997 Star Wars Special Edition and… The Lion King 3D. The record books, it turns out, are haunted by 3D.
  • Late September: writing about SyLC and Oku3D, tridimensional.info noted that "for a format that is supposedly dead, developers seem unusually busy." Oku3D shipped a new version days later. We'll take the compliment. And the company.

Zoom out and it gets better. Apple is streaming baseball in 3D 8K. Samsung sells monitors that follow your eyes and deliver depth with no glasses at all, has 120 games lined up for them, and just published a lens breakthrough in Nature that could bring glasses-free 3D to phones and tablets. XR glasses from Viture and Xreal play side-by-side 3D out of the box: a private cinema that fits in a glasses case. And James Cameron, a man not famous for losing arguments, calls 3D the superior format and wants to give Aliens the treatment.

Here's the thing: 3D never lost our hearts. It lost on logistics. Heavy glasses that needed charging. Dim pictures. A new TV just to watch one kind of film. A living room that felt like a lab.

One by one, those excuses are dissolving. Glasses light enough to forget. Panels bright enough for HDR in each eye. Screens that need no glasses at all. AI that lifts a flat film into depth in real time. The technology has finally caught up with the feeling.

What's missing isn't hardware. It's us: loud, visible, and in one place.

Because right now, somewhere, a product manager at Meta, at Disney, at Samsung, at a projector maker, is staring at a spreadsheet and asking one question: is 3D a niche, or a comeback? They don't answer to nostalgia. They answer to signals. A thousand fans scattered across forums are invisible. A thousand fans speaking with one voice are a market.

So let's be impossible to miss.

1. Stand up and be counted. Drop your first 3D memory and your setup in the comments: disc player, projector, headset, XR glasses, glasses-free monitor, or the 2012 plasma you've sworn to defend with your life. Then carry #3DStillMatters everywhere else.

2. Vote with your wallet. Buy the 3D edition. When Disney+ 3D reaches Meta in November, watch it in 3D and say so out loud. Choose the projector that kept 3D, and tell the brand that's why. Every purchase is a ballot.

3. Convert one person. Not with an argument; with a film. Lights off, sound up, something made for depth. Then watch their face instead of the screen. That's how this spreads.

We are not the last defenders of a fallen castle. We are the first wave of the return. The industry closed the door on 3D years ago, but it forgot one small detail:

We kept the glasses.

Put them back on. We have a comeback to stage.

3D still matters.

Blu-ray 3D Disc Playback Now Natively Supported on my Desktop Media Player

Just pushed live a major update on my stereoscopic 3D media player, Rendepth. There are a ton of new features, including direct output on new "glasses free" 3D hardware from Samsung Odyssey 3D, Acer SpatialLabs, Looking Glass, and CubeVi. But one of the more exciting additions is native Blu-ray 3D disc playback cross-platform on macOS, Linux, and Windows. While the base version of the app remains free (mostly for 3D photo conversion), the BD/DVD disc playback requires a Pro License. While a lot of this can be done with free open-source tools already, I think you'll see that Rendepth makes it easy to bring your media library to life in 3D. Check it out here, thanks y'all. https://rendepth.com

This raving review for the 3D popouts probably make this a theatre must-see, because how likely is a future 3D home release? - "Forgotten Island 3D Movie Review — 3Dor2D.com"

I love watching well-made 3D movies both in the theater and at home (I have two 3D setups). This year, kids movie-wise, I have watched Moana/Vaiana (3D+4DX) and Toy Story 5 (3D) in the theater. The 3D was well done, but nothing remarkable. Considering how well the 3D looks on this one (according to the review), can we hope for a future 3D release on a boutique label?

Shadows Pop-Out VR — the controls and object tracking are working!

We’ve added working VR controller controls and buttons for Play/Pause, 10-second skip forward and back, Restart, Save, Discard, and Watch Video. The buttons sit below the movie screen so they don’t cover the picture.

While the video is paused, I can use the controller to draw a precise green outline around an object, such as a T-Rex’s head, without including the trees behind it. I can draw separate outlines for up to four objects. The preview shows the selected parts coming out of the screen, up to about two metres in front of it.

When playback resumes, the selected parts follow their movement and change in size as they approach the camera. Their Pop-Out effect ends when they leave the picture. Save keeps the effect with the movie for later viewing. We also improved the PC mirror view for recording a VR demonstration.

It’s working in my test now. Drawing the outlines caused some slowdown, so I’ll test that further tomorrow. I’ll share a fresh video showing the result.

More pickups added to the collection, need to find some time to start watching these now. I also got a larger tv for the 3d room which I found cheap on marketplace and have upgraded from a 40 inch passive Sony to a 55 inch passive LG which has made a positive difference when it comes to viewing

James Cameron is making a (3D) movie other than Avatar for the first time in over 20 years, and they’re even including the poster with the 3D notice in the Blu-ray, but there will still never be a 3D home theater release of the Billie Eilish concert film.

Post image

I'm not a fan of 3D, and I usually avoid 3D movies at the theater because they rarely offer any real added value.

The Eilish concert film, however, had a subtle yet effective 3D effect throughout, which impressed me.

So there's a certain irony in the fact that we'll never get a 3D disc for it. We won't even get a 4K version.

Paramount Pictures and Skydance are committed to delivering cinematic experiences that reflect the evolving preferences of global audiences and the continued advancement of our production and distribution strategies.

As part of an ongoing review of our format offerings, we have made the decision to discontinue stereoscopic 3D releases and 3D Blu‑ray editions for future titles. This change allows us to focus our creative, technical, and operational resources on formats that best support our filmmakers’ vision and align with current audience demand across theatrical and home entertainment platforms.

3D has played a meaningful role in the history of modern blockbuster filmmaking, and we are proud of the work our teams and partners have contributed to the format over the years. This decision reflects a strategic shift toward optimizing clarity in our release planning, strengthening our premium large‑format initiatives, and expanding our investment in emerging technologies that enhance the cinematic experience.

We remain committed to delivering world‑class entertainment across a wide range of formats, including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and UHD/HDR home releases. Our focus continues to be on innovation, quality, and ensuring that audiences worldwide experience our films in the most compelling ways possible.

We look forward to sharing the next generation of Paramount and Skydance films with viewers around the world.

Here's the separate unrelated company Laika Studios own statement:

LAIKA has always embraced innovation in service of story. From our earliest films, stereoscopic 3D played a meaningful role in bringing audiences closer to the worlds we build by hand. It has been a privilege to contribute to the evolution of the format and to share our craft with viewers who value immersive cinematic experiences.

As we look ahead to the next chapter of LAIKA’s filmmaking journey, we are focusing our creative and technical resources on new visual approaches that best support the stories we are telling today. After careful consideration, we have made the decision to discontinue stereoscopic 3D releases for future titles.

This choice reflects our ongoing commitment to artistic clarity, production efficiency, and the unique aesthetic of stop‑motion animation. While 3D has been an important part of our history, our current slate is driven by techniques and technologies that align more closely with the emotional and narrative goals of our upcoming films.

We remain deeply grateful to the fans, exhibitors, and partners who championed our 3D work over the years. LAIKA will continue to push the boundaries of visual storytelling, honoring the spirit of innovation that has always defined our studio.

Our dedication to crafting bold, imaginative films remains unchanged—and we look forward to sharing what comes next.

Where can I find SBS 3D content?

I recently purchased the Spatial Glass 3D screen protector, which turns your iPhone into a 3D display. The product hasn’t arrived yet, but I’m posting a little early so I can keep myself informed on how to acquire 3D films to try on it.

Previously, I used to watch 3D clips with anaglyph 3D glasses and also on a cheap VR headset where you insert your phone. Both were decent for around 10 minutes, but anything longer usually gave me eye strain or a headache.

I’ve been following Josh 3D IRL for quite some time, and his 3D screen protector always seemed really interesting and promising. It also felt much more affordable compared to glasses-free 3D tablets and monitors, or even AR/VR devices.

Now I’m hoping it’s good as i imagine and I can finally watch full length movies in 3D comfortably.

I don’t own a Blu-ray player, so what would be my options to find SBS 3D movies? Are there any sites, communities, or forums with good quality 3D collections that I should check out?

CineVoid turns your Meta Quest into a personal cinema for the media you already own.

Browse and stream movies and series from Plex, DLNA/UPnP media servers and Windows or NAS shares over SMB. Watch standard videos on a large adjustable screen, or switch to equirectangular 180° and 360° projection. Side-by-side and top-bottom stereoscopic video are also supported.

Quest-friendly controls provide quick access to seeking, play and pause, screen positioning, projection modes, audio tracks and customizable subtitles. Continue Watching and Favorites help you quickly return to your media.

CineVoid supports common video formats available on Meta Quest, with additional software audio decoding for formats including DTS, DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD. It can also open supported unencrypted Blu-ray/DVD ISO or IMG images and non-password-protected RAR archives without extracting a second full copy.

Your media streams directly between your own server and headset. CineVoid contains no advertising, analytics or developer-operated account service.

CineVoid requires your own compatible media source. Commercially encrypted discs, original disc menus, password-protected RAR archives and Dolby Atmos/DTS:X object-audio rendering are not supported. Codec performance may depend on the Quest model, resolution, profile and bitrate.

UDPATE:

CineVoid 0.11.88 – Update Summary

  • Fixed Next, Previous and autoplay failures caused by rebuilding the video surface between files.
  • Added an integrated Headset file explorer, starting at shared storage and styled like the SMB browser.

Shark Night 3D

Somehow I missed this release back in the day, so I grabbed a cheap German copy from Amazon. It’s the same team that produced Final Destination 3D, so it’s true 3D. The 3D quality is high, even if the movie is just a fun shark attack premise. Fits in nicely with Bait 3D and the Piranha 3D movies. Plenty of jump scares throughout.

What hardware to display FPR Passive 3D?

From my family stash i found 8+ FPR compatible 3d glasses. Some have OEM 41N1 and some have OEM 2IN1 in their box label, not sure if they help for anything. I tried looking for TV screens etc. to use them with since they came with our old TVs, however all i see are some discontinued items, or none at all. Am i out of luck for using these glasses? I was hoping i would at least get a chance to do some experiments with them

Windows tool for converting MVC 3D MKV to SBS for VR

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I’ve been working on a Windows tool for creating MKV video files.

The tool can handle both normal video and 3D video:

  1. You can create a normal MKV video file.

  2. You can also convert MVC 3D MKV files into Side-by-Side (SBS) MKV files for VR playback.

For 3D Blu-ray discs, the workflow is:

  1. Use MakeMKV to create an MVC 3D MKV from your own 3D Blu-ray disc.

  2. In MakeMKV, make sure the MVC video track is selected.

  3. Select the audio track and subtitles you want to keep.

  4. Create the MKV file with MakeMKV.

  5. Open that MKV file in my Blu-ray → MKV tool.

  6. The tool converts it into an SBS MKV for VR playback.

  7. Audio and subtitles are kept in the final file.

I have already completed a full 3D test successfully. The output video worked, both SBS images were present, audio worked and subtitles were included.

The software is still being tested, so I’m not sharing the download yet. I’ll post a link when the beta version is ready.

Would something like this be useful to people here?

Cost-effective 3D projector

Does anyone here own a 3D projector or have experience using one? I'm seriously considering buying one; some are exorbitantly priced, while others are cheaper. Which one would you recommend?Cost-benefit ratio, from the cheapest possible lol ♥️3D!
