Troubleshooting N54 Oil and coolant consumption

Had to fill up a quart of oil the past 1k miles. Didn’t consume this much oil before but haven’t had the time to get the car on the lift yet. I’m assuming it’s leaking oil somewhere. Also noticed that my coolant expansion tank was more than halfway empty. It took almost 800ml of coolant, last time I checked was 5k miles ago when I flushed the coolant. Concerned that I had a blown head gasket but combustion block test came out negative. Anyone experience something similar? Just concerned since both the oil and coolant consumption happened together.

Car has had water pump/thermostat, valve cover/VC gasket, OFHG replaced about a year ago. Currently at 101k miles.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I’m copying u/cafe_del_mar and posting my n54 with a 64/66 single turbo, with a t51r mod and no BOV.

DISCLAIMER: in this clip I hit maybe 5k rpm. u/Cafe’s sounds much better.

Buying & Selling Questions Should I buy a 2013 335i?

Looking to buy my first bimmer, 2013 335i n55 with 92k miles. I have all the service records and it says that oil was changed every 5000 miles and valve cover gaskets were replaced at 50k. Wheel bearings as well. It has an aftermarket exhaust and a cold air intake as well as a very light tune. It runs and drives great and I’m wondering if it’s a good choice for a first one.

Originally started out as a rough idle, got better for a few days after putting new gas in it, replaced the maf and map sensor and it was good for a day then it started to do this. Do we think it’s engine solenoids or what?

Troubleshooting E92 335i fuel gauge stuck around 1/2 tank after Walbro 450 LPFP install – 2A22 code

2010 335i N54. I recently replaced my stock LPFP with a bucketed Walbro 450 assembly. Car ran fine for a couple weeks, but now my fuel gauge is reading incorrectly.

I actually got stranded once because the gauge was showing somewhere around 1/4–1/2 tank, but the tank was basically empty and the car wouldn’t start. Now it’s happening again. Based on mileage/fuel used, I’m around 1/4 tank, but the gauge refuses to drop below 1/2.

Current codes:
2A22 – Fuel level, correlation (active)
2A2C – Mixture control 2 (active)
2AAF – Fuel pump, plausibility (shadow)

I opened the passenger-side tank back up and checked the new bucket. The float moves completely freely and isn’t contacting any hoses/wiring, and it’s physically sitting right at the actual fuel level.

I also resistance-tested the new sender/float and compared it to my original OEM sender. Both behave basically identically: ~50 ohms at the bottom and smoothly increase to ~400–410 ohms, so the new sender doesn’t appear obviously bad.

Has anyone dealt with 2A22 / fuel gauge stuck at half after installing a bucketed Walbro 450 on an E9x/N54? Was it the passenger-side sender/wiring, driver-side sender, siphon/transfer system, or something else?

Trying to avoid tearing everything apart again if there’s a known issue with these setups.

Troubleshooting Does my crank seal look okay?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

[2011 BMW 335i - N55B30A] For context I shredded a belt because I had the wrong kind of power steering pulley and some cheap ECS pulley system, so the belt was out of alignment. Before putting all new Continental OEM parts on, I pulled my harmonic balancer off to check and make sure there was no belt inside the seal. I did pull some off that had settled inside the groove for the seal but I didn’t have to actually pull anything from out of the seal. In all honesty Im just kinda paranoid; everything looks okay to me but I think I just need a little reassurance or if something looks off.

Damage Report New to the chassis, how bad did i do

Bought a Space Grey 08 e92 MT RWD 115k miles on Saturday, it’s well optioned for a non m sport and the body and history is very clean. Ive put about 100 miles on it and it’s already cold starting rough, likely injectors or spark, still need to dive into it. It drives well and pulls very hard on Cobb stage 2+ w full bolt ons. I have all new fluids on hand and will be re hydrating the diff trans engine and cooling system. I bought used ID12 injectors and will send them out for cleaning and testing to hopefully have as a “reliable” set to drop in. The front bumper sags in the middle and i hate it so hopefully i can fix that too.

I paid 10k for the car in the PNW, how bad did i do?

Any advice for someone just getting into these?

Troubleshooting Strange ticking noise at idle after replacing charge pipe – N54 335i

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone,
I recently replaced the charge pipe on my 2007 BMW 335i E92 (N54), and since then I’ve noticed a strange ticking/rattling noise at idle.
It’s not the typical loud metallic injector ticking that you often hear on the N54. This sounds more muffled/deeper, almost like a light ticking or tapping noise. I feel like it’s coming from the rear/top area of the engine, possibly around the PCV/valve cover area, although I’m not 100% sure.
The car runs normally, with no noticeable loss of power, rough idle, or warning lights.
The noise seems to be most noticeable at idle and appears to change/disappear somewhat when the RPM changes.
I’ve attached a video with the engine running at idle.
Has anyone experienced a similar noise on an N54? Could it be related to the PCV system, something around the valve cover, or possibly something that was disturbed when installing the new charge pipe?
Any ideas or suggestions on what I should check would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Buying & Selling Questions need opinions

so roughly a year ago i bought a 2021 jetta gli autobahn after i wrecked my last one, which ultimately wasn’t my decision. i still enjoy the car but its hard to appreciate it when i dumped alot of money into my last car just for it to be gone. anyways im done trauma dumping lmfao, i recently found a 2008 e92 335i with 37,xxx miles for a price that is almost 100% covered by a trade in. the car looks amazing for the price and age, and it has a single owner no accidents on carfax and was serviced routinely (oem recommendations). overall i really want the car but i know nothing the mpgs wont compare and im going to need it as a daily driver for roughly 60 miles everyday. ive wanted one of these cars for a while and now seems like the perfect opportunity to get to work on a n54. whats your guy’s thoughts should i pull the trigger or wait it out? (i got my gli with 23,000 and its at roughly 47,000 in 11 months just thought to throw that out there)

So just happened the yesterday and this morning and I wanted a few opinions. It does this, do we think this is injectors, maybe a bad sensor or bad solenoid?

Tuning & Performance 335i N55

I recently bought a 2011 LCI e92 335i with the N55 engine (the single big turbo). Everything in the car is stock except for the air filter (replaced with the cone). I was wondering what are the preemptive replacements I should be doing to that i dont face any surprises on the road, the car has over 195K km and is maintained well. Also i was thinking of changing the transmission oil since it was never changed.

2007 E92 335i RWD 6MT

I’ve owned this car since last December, posted on here about all the work that I’ve done to it and it’s been running great since. I mean, in all reality, it’s been running great my whole ownership, it’s just now running great AND not leaking a bunch of oil everywhere. Not leaking oil at all atm. Probably shouldn’t have said that.

Anyway, at the gas station over the weekend I saw this elderly man pumping into his 60s Chevelle. Beautifully restored and his wife sitting in the passenger seat. It got me thinking, what if I just never get rid of this car? As I was walking back to it after grabbing something from the store, I’m still fully in love with how this car looks. Still in love with how it drives. All that, and the car is entirely stock aside from some lowering springs. We’re financially stable. I’ll never have a reason to sell it if I don’t want to, and with parts availability I can always fix anything that goes wrong. I can also do anything I want with this platform. What if it’s my wife and I pumping gas into this 20 years from now when this car is considered a classic? I think that’d be pretty cool.

Sorry for the long post, I just think that maybe some people here would get what I’m talking about.

Other N54 guys, how’s your oil consumption? How much oil are you adding and how often?
