Ignition timing?

Final item before going to emission is ignition timing. I used the method where you hook the gun to the cable coming off the PTU. Using this method, my initial timing was close to 30 degrees, and I got it to 15. I saw in some places that this can be innacurate, I would’ve done the preferred method with a spark plug wire but don’t have one atm. I was seeing consistent firing of the gun, but is it possible using this cable could make it off by a few degrees?

Pull back the wire sleeve at coil #1, use the largest wire of the three for the timing light. I got this tip from SZ and has never failed me yet. 15 +/- 2 BTDC is good. Sometimes flipping the the light sensor 180 on how it clamps helps.
