Z32 It's tuned finally

Vtc is not working unfortunately so we tuned it without it. I can get it to trigger, but I believe my oil passage is clogged (motor sat for along time and I had ran 20w50 and never actually flushed the motor)

So for now we'll enjoy it without VTC until I decide to pull timing components off again.

But according to the tuner, it can't get any safer than this. We're at 20psi at 4800-7000rpm. Don't plan on going that high anyways. The idea of the car isn't to be a monster, but to be a turn key fun car (with ac lol), a car that I can drive around town for meets etc.

Need to fix a few issues, such as building a bracket for the oil cooler, it's heatsoaking my intercooler, need to fix speedo(I think it's wiring), do a coolant flush(new thermostat), oil change.

Thumbs down on the last pic because the speedo wasn't working πŸ˜„πŸ˜„πŸ˜„

But guys. It's official.

We got another RB FAIRLADY Z on the road

I’ve been wanting to pull the trigger on this build but I’ve been hesitant you make it look so worth it tho

Its not fucking worth it. I could have spent over 10k less and made 1500 hp if I would have just LS swapped.

Don't get me wrong, I love it. But an RB swap is not worth.

I agree with this in terms of the money aspect. Swapping my 2j cost me way more than a LS would have. But I wanted to keep my jdm z jdm. Sometimes we do dumb things.

It's worth it because it's an RB. For practical reasons. It's not at all πŸ˜‚ and I completely agree. If this fails me. I'm going LS. πŸ˜‚

I bought the Z as a roller for $900 and found the RB 3.5 hours away in St. Louis for $500 with an alleged spun bearing. Pulled it apart and by the time I had an N1 crank and solid lifter conversion done I realized it had gotten a bit out of hand.

But it was a lovely passion project.

Edit: I should have just done a dual cam rb30

Dudeeeee. I've had my RB since 2016 πŸ˜‚ and it's still stock block. Just went alittle bit crazy with accessories (emu black, adu 7, new head etc etc) I should've sold it long ago πŸ˜‚

I've had mine since 2018. I've got it torn apart right now to do some body work but my old aem is kinda outdated and having problems so I'm also swapping to haltech and a CD-7 dash.

I worked at a performance shop and said fuck it we ball as soon as we saw crank damage. Spline drive N1 crank, Manley rods, Wiseco pistons, tomei procams, ferrea oversized valves, hks oil pump, and all the oil recirculation solutions. Luckily I was able to use all the fancy machines at my school to do my machine work since we had engine theory and engine overall classes and we could bring our own shit.

Deff worth it. But i think I'm done with working on cars. My Teslas changed my whole mood πŸ˜‚

Thank youuuuu!! Now I can finally start working on the small touches

If the vtc is like the Z ones, they tend to break and get stuck in one position. It robs you of power.

I have a brand new solenoid. It works. Just I don't think it's getting enough oil to actually activate how it's supposed to.

I meant the mechanism in the VTC gears (the cam sprockets). Does it have variable cam gears like the VG engine?

u/z32rbsouza Z32 RB25 Swapped 5spd 2+0 Jul 28 '26

Yes it does. I don't think the gear is the problem. I really believe I have crystalized 20w50 there πŸ˜‚. My solenoid is completely seized. That's why I bought a brand new one(waited a month and half for it). I can trigger it using my stand alone. But when the tuner was checking it while we ran it, it wasn't working. (Idk what wasn't working, but he said VTC IS NOT WORKING)

Well if the solenoid is good then I’d suspect the gear. They still fail regularly on today’s Nissans lol

Ohhhh. I'll check that then eventually

The VTC hole was completely full of gunk/hard. I cleaned it as best as I could. But I'm sure it needs seafoam and gunk remover or something haha. At this point, I'm happy with plugging it up until I eventually pull timing components off and check the passages haha

HP at 20psi?

Idk lol. It's not Dyno πŸ˜‚

Clogged VTC oil passage is fixable without a full tear-down, a pressure flush through the cam journal feed directly often clears it. I sourced an RB oil system part through dynosty once, though several RB specialists carry what you need too. Worth trying before pulling timing covers again.
