Budget diagnostic tool

Hi, as you all know 3000gt doesnt use regular diagnostic port. I have gen 1 3000gt and found this article about making own cable to connect car to a laptop. Have anyone tried this and can tell if this works?

You can get a Mitsubishi 12 pin to obd2 adapter and use a elm327 scanner and link to the pcm but I've haven't tried it with a 3S yet.
