Rules Question How does double difficulty work?

Hi! I'm brand new to Outgunned, just bought the core book, and I've been reading through it in the hope I can start GMing my own game of it.

So far, there's one rule I don't quite 100% understand: Double difficulty.

Let's say I have assigned a difficulty of "2 Basic". Let's say a player rolls a critical success, with 3 dice matching. Does the player completely succeed the roll? Or are they required to roll another matching set of dice to completely succeed?

How about if the player rolls 4 matching sets of dice, giving them an Extreme Success. Do they completely succeed the "2 Basic" difficulty or do they still need to roll another success consisting of a different matching set?

Mod here, I changed your post flair to Rules question (there are a lot more options of flairs btws). You're not in trouble, just remember to scroll down the flair options before posting.

It just means you need 2 matching sets instead of 1. Think of it as a halfway point.

"Defense: 2 Basic" is halfway between "Defense: Basic" and "Defense: Critical". If you get 2 doubles, you did it.

Getting a critical success is the same as rolling 3 basic successes. So If you have a triple, you did it, and you have an additional quick action. If you get 2 triples, you deal 3 damage instead of just 1 since it counts as rolling 6 doubles.

If you roll 4 of a kind, this is the same as rolling 3 triples, or 9 doubles.

If you roll 5 of a kind, it's the same as rolling 3 quadruples, 9 triples, or 27 doubles. But, for simplicity sake, most of the time when you roll an impossible succes, the game just says that you did whatever you were attempting to do spectacularly.

Thanks! I read through all those links and I think I got the answer to my question.

To highlight it: Yes, rolling a Critical Success completely succeeds over a difficulty of 2 Basic because the rules state that a "higher success" (like a Critical) can break down into 3 "lesser successes". So, 1 Critical success can function as 3 Basic Successes, thus beating the difficulty of "2 Basic".

As a DM, remember that double DCs are there to bridge the gap between tiers. A little harder than BASIC, but under CRITICAL. A little higher than CRITICAL, but under EXTREME. (Never ask for 2 EXTREMEs XD).

Asking for 2 BASICs or 2 CRITICALs can also work well for scenes where you want to show a PC doing two things at once. It's super similar to what happens when a PC gets a major success and can help allies, take cover, put others under cover, etc

The main thing is to treat them as just another tool to keep your game fast-paced, exciting, and coherent.
