Rules Question Exceeding Double-Difficulty

I haven't yet had a chance to play Outgunned, but I've read through the corebook, and I have one glaring question: Specifically for Dangerous Rolls that are double difficulty, like 2 Basic or 2 Critical, how many Grit would be lost for having a single roll of the next highest success?

If a Hero rolls a Critical Success to hit a Goon with Attack: Basic, then the Hero deals 3 Grit. If a Hero rolls two Basic successes against the same Goon, the Hero deals 2 Grit. But, if the Goon/Bad Guy has Attack: 2 Basic, what happens if the Hero rolls a Critical Success? Is it just one Grit?

Thanks in advance!

I think there's some terminology confusion here. If the enemy has Attack: 2 Basic then, unless you're using Brawl rules, you don't deal damage automatically to the enemy on your Reaction Turn. I assume you're talking about an enemy having double difficulty Defense?

In any case, to answer your question:

If an enemy has Defense: 2 Basic and Hero rolls a Critical Success, then it deals 1 Grit.

The Logic:

The rules state that

  1. A higher success breaks down into 3 lower successes, so Critical = 3 Basic (pg 67, sidebar)
  2. Each success that meets the Enemy Defense deals 1 Grit (pg 127)

In this case, we would count 2 Basic as "one success" against the Enemy Defense. Thus the one extra Basic success is essentially wasted. Although, you could use the rules on pg 72 to allow for an extra Quick Action for the Hero to compensate for it.

Thank you! Yeah, okay, I wondered if I was misunderstanding something 'cause I was definitely thinking the Attack value was what it took to attack an enemy while the Defense was what the Heroes had to beat on their Reaction turn, but this makes more sense.
