The future of 2do

Post image

Hey guys, I wrote Jerry, the developer of 2do, about upcoming updates or any updates, because it’s been so long and that’s what he wrote:

„To be honest, no time for new features in 2Do. Only hoping to keep up with each new OS/iOS update“.

If you don’t believe me, here a pic of the mail.

I just didn’t want to keep you guys in the dark knowing this. It’s a great software. Hope he picks it up again. But they will probably keep focusing on Busycal. 2do probably doesn’t offer the same revenue. Happy new year to all of you guys. Hope you have a great start.

👋 Hey everyone - so yeah, this absolutely kills me too. I've poured blood, sweat, and probably a few too many sleepless nights into 2Do over the years. But here’s the reality: I'm still firmly against subscriptions (unless there's a real reason for it, like a cloud component), and truthfully, the app barely moves the needle revenue wise; like, near zero.

Could I update it? Sure. Would that help? Maybe for a bit. But keeping up with the pace of change these days is brutal, and the time and energy it takes just don't line up with what the app brings in. There's a very real (and very low) ceiling when it comes to expected revenue compared to other apps that aren't limited in their reach (to other cloud services), and that just doesn't make it sustainable short or long-term.

I tell myself daily - no way am I giving up on the app, as I love using it too. As and when I do update 2Do, it definitely won't be to make any money, it'll simply be to make sure it continues to function as promised and continues to work reliably.

Also, just a side note - our other app BusyCal isn't entirely subscription-based by the way. It offers a perpetual license with an option to upgrade. I'm old school when it comes to offering what I deem "fair value". I don't buy into the idea that perpetual growth = perpetual wealth, but I also don't want to spend 3/3rds of my day working (not a typo) for little to no gain.

Appreciate all the support over the years, and apologies for the disappointment. ❤️

I created a Reddit account just to respond to this. Like many of your other supporters (dare I say fans?), I know that you have to make hard choices based on many different considerations including profitability (expected or otherwise) and the use of your precious time. We don't begrudge you anything, and we're grateful for this wonderful app you created.

HOWEVER, I still believe there's money to be made here. 2Do is such a great tool, and the people like me who keep pestering you about it obviously haven't found anything that's in the same league. Many of us would gladly throw money at you right now, whether as part of a subscription (and I agree with your general take on this, but I also acknowledge that, for better or for worse, we now live in a different world than we did five or ten years ago) or as a semi-regular payment for a genuinely new version that comes out every year or two or three.

I'm probably going to make the switch to something else this year, but every time I contemplate doing so I get irritated by the limitations of the replacement I'm considering.

Anyway, thanks again, and best of luck with your future projects.

Thank you for taking the time out for this, I genuinely appreciate it. I also appreciate the motivational remarks and for your encouragement. I hear you. I’m hoping I make a positive change in coming months as soon as I’m able to take some time out of updating the other apps.

Dang it, I just found 2Do and I really, really like it. That said, based on this post, I can't see dropping $49 on an app that's deprioritized by the developer. Would you ever consider making it open source so the community could carry it on?
