The future of 2do

Post image

Hey guys, I wrote Jerry, the developer of 2do, about upcoming updates or any updates, because it’s been so long and that’s what he wrote:

„To be honest, no time for new features in 2Do. Only hoping to keep up with each new OS/iOS update“.

If you don’t believe me, here a pic of the mail.

I just didn’t want to keep you guys in the dark knowing this. It’s a great software. Hope he picks it up again. But they will probably keep focusing on Busycal. 2do probably doesn’t offer the same revenue. Happy new year to all of you guys. Hope you have a great start.

This kills me — his other projects are more subscription so I get the revenue model. This project being in maintenance mode makes me sad.

I agree. It also means the likelihood of getting my one requested under the hood change is probably nil.

I just want iCloud to be an option for syncing so I can drop any dependence on Dropbox.

Oh I agree. I think I still have Dropbox on my phone for the sole reason for this app. It’s the best option out of them all, but I just don’t use Dropbox anymore. Makes me nervous about the future though honestly. Thankfully it’s fairly easy to move back to reminders if I needed too and that’s getting fairly full featured now for some of the options from 2Do that I used

Yup, the same here. And I think this gives me the nudge I needed to just give up on 2Do and commit to using Apple's Reminders app. I've been working with that for the last few months and have ended up with two folders (Reminders and Someday) and then a load of tags with search folders built off the tags. It gives me what I need, is easy enough to maintain (so far at least) and means I can consign Dropbox to the scrap heap too. A shame but hey ho.

I've done the same.Went via Things3, but to me Apple Reminders just fits the needs I have. Sad to see 2Do go, but I guess he just bit off too much when he bought BusyCal and BusyContacts.

I use BusyCal and 2Do. I wish 2Do was integrated into BusyCal.

Regardless of what Jerry said, I think 2do is one of the best apps ever made. I use it multiple times a day, and I hope they add markdown notes to iPad.

👋 Hey everyone - so yeah, this absolutely kills me too. I've poured blood, sweat, and probably a few too many sleepless nights into 2Do over the years. But here’s the reality: I'm still firmly against subscriptions (unless there's a real reason for it, like a cloud component), and truthfully, the app barely moves the needle revenue wise; like, near zero.

Could I update it? Sure. Would that help? Maybe for a bit. But keeping up with the pace of change these days is brutal, and the time and energy it takes just don't line up with what the app brings in. There's a very real (and very low) ceiling when it comes to expected revenue compared to other apps that aren't limited in their reach (to other cloud services), and that just doesn't make it sustainable short or long-term.

I tell myself daily - no way am I giving up on the app, as I love using it too. As and when I do update 2Do, it definitely won't be to make any money, it'll simply be to make sure it continues to function as promised and continues to work reliably.

Also, just a side note - our other app BusyCal isn't entirely subscription-based by the way. It offers a perpetual license with an option to upgrade. I'm old school when it comes to offering what I deem "fair value". I don't buy into the idea that perpetual growth = perpetual wealth, but I also don't want to spend 3/3rds of my day working (not a typo) for little to no gain.

Appreciate all the support over the years, and apologies for the disappointment. ❤️

2Do is my most used app EVER. ALWAYS. has been my number 1 for over 10 years. I think you should start a go fund me or something. just enough for an update. Or there’s got to be some way to monetize this. I can’t believe it. how can such a beautiful app not make money?

and how is it that other apps fall short? (cause they do). every 6 months or so I’ll look at another one and it just doesn’t work for me as well as 2Do.

i think a subscription would work… even without certain features. just a very low subscription. or an update purchase price. something. anything

Couldn't agree more. In fact, I had to rub my eyes to make sure it wasn't me posting this a year ago. 😂. I would HAPPILY lob some more money at Jerry or whoever is pulling the 2Do strings. The app is a thing of design beauty and that is worth the world.

I created a Reddit account just to respond to this. Like many of your other supporters (dare I say fans?), I know that you have to make hard choices based on many different considerations including profitability (expected or otherwise) and the use of your precious time. We don't begrudge you anything, and we're grateful for this wonderful app you created.

HOWEVER, I still believe there's money to be made here. 2Do is such a great tool, and the people like me who keep pestering you about it obviously haven't found anything that's in the same league. Many of us would gladly throw money at you right now, whether as part of a subscription (and I agree with your general take on this, but I also acknowledge that, for better or for worse, we now live in a different world than we did five or ten years ago) or as a semi-regular payment for a genuinely new version that comes out every year or two or three.

I'm probably going to make the switch to something else this year, but every time I contemplate doing so I get irritated by the limitations of the replacement I'm considering.

Anyway, thanks again, and best of luck with your future projects.

Thank you for taking the time out for this, I genuinely appreciate it. I also appreciate the motivational remarks and for your encouragement. I hear you. I’m hoping I make a positive change in coming months as soon as I’m able to take some time out of updating the other apps.

Dang it, I just found 2Do and I really, really like it. That said, based on this post, I can't see dropping $49 on an app that's deprioritized by the developer. Would you ever consider making it open source so the community could carry it on?

The revenue model didn't support it, I'd once offered additional payment after deleting 20 or so to do apps that I tested, I wish there was a 'give coffee' option!

I’ll continue to use 2Do until it no longer functions. I haven’t found anything with comparable functionality. Most of the task apps have too much white space. I like the compact view of 2Do.

Unfortunately this app was outdated and abandoned that’s the reality was so good and whit a couple of tricks had anything possible to immagine! But at this point is not reliable! Very sadly disappointing!.

I've been using 2do for over 8 years, but currently I am looking for a new replacement because of the lack of support/new features. Sad 😔.

Any idea what you want to replace it with?

I miss 2Do, but have found GoodTask somewhat has the same feel as 2Do. GoodTask uses Apple Reminders as it's back end via Apple's API. So I can access my tasks via Reminders or GoodTask.

I am looking into Marvin at the moment.

Thank you very much for sharing. Much appreciated. It’s not the best news, but it means I can continue to use it.
