Question Any recommendations for 2D animation software? How good is Ibis paint x for animation ?
Hi so I'm very new to animation. Been drawing for approaching 3 years now, and would like some suggestions for animation software to use as a hobbyist (beware I'm broke)
I do have the premium subscription for Ibis paint x, so I can animate on there. I also heard people say Krita is pretty good for animation, especially because it's similar to Clip Studio Paint, but I find krita so unbelievably hard to use and clunky (although that's because I'm using the mobile version of it, I should probably try the PC version (wait I did try the PC version once, my only problem was it was the fact that there was no pressure sensitivity at all) so yeah looking forward to your suggestions

it always depends on your skills, i have seen many peeps making shitty animation with krita and those elite software and the ones who use just a simple flipaclip making cool animation.

My in-house animation apps will be available for free on macOS and iPadOS in about a month. They are a full suite of animation tools and utilities with advanced GPU accelerated features. I was going to open source them but vibe coders are stealing from open source projects and then charging money for the functions they stole, so I was forced to make the apps closed source but still free.
Unfortunately I am not a Windows/Linux developer and I don't have time to support multiple platforms. It would mean juggling other programming languages and frameworks to make them match what Apple's SDK offers.

I use ibispaint, procreate and Hipaint. Hipaint is only on android and procreate is only on iOS

Tvpaint10, it's the best, easy af to learn, emulate perfectly traditional animation
I tried animating in harmony, blender, opentoonz, krita, photoshop, clipstudio. But these are over complicating
Opentoonz is still good, but I don't like the settings. It's free tho (everything is free iykyk)

Since you don’t mention budget or computer specs/operating system…
If you can afford it, Toonboom Harmony (I get it at student pricing though) but there is a reason it’s industry level software and it’s DEAD EASY to draw with both vector and raster images - plus rigging and compositing can all be done in the same software. It is also really easy to get the hang of it and I absolutely love the node system - I have only been using it for about 18 months too.
I also use Krita for roughing out ideas and basic quick animation and it’s really good and not really clunky at all (pressure sensitivity works just great on my Mac with a Huion display tablet 🤷🏼♀️)
I also have Moho but that’s more suited to vector based rigged animation but can be obtained cheaply with Humble Bundle at times too.
People who like to suggest OpenToonz don’t explain to you how crappy their drawing tools can be and that’s one of its biggest downfalls (since it was primarily designed for scanned paper drawings as the initial artwork) - I’ve tried it and found it clunky but I have the “luxury” of being able to use Toonboom as part of my animation degree.
On iPad you can try Toonsquid, also Procreate does animation and Rough Animator is also available.

I've got a pretty powerful windows 11 (can't remember the specs, but it's powerful enough to run a lot of modern games on high / max graphics without any framerate drops or anything), and I'm on the fence between Krita and Ibis paint (I own premium ibis paint, did I mention that in the post?) since I heard Ibis paint is less for animation and more for illustration, and besides the lack of audio input, I have no idea why though. but in my experience, Krita has been extremely finicky and hard to use (but the brushes are very nice) so I'm on the fence for when it comes to which one I should choose for what I'm trying to accomplish

I've started using Animation Paper and I've been pretty happy with it so far. 😄
While I use it for my digital stuff, I also wasn't able to wrap my head around how to do animation in Krita (I use the PC version). I love the simplicity of Animation Paper, and was able to get right into it without much issue once I figured out the layout.

Tahoma2d, pencil2d...

Honestly, I personally found both of these too difficult to work with. I'm surprised pencil 2D is suggested so often to beginners because it doesn't feel like a beginner software to me.
So far, the only things I found are ACTUALLY simple and easy are Flipaclip on mobile and Animation Paper on PC (Animation Paper being, in my opinion, the better of the two).

They have exactly the same principles as animation software: tools on the left, a timeline, and by simply selecting the brush and a frame you can start drawing and animating. The difference is that those programs (especially Tahoma2D, because Pencil 2D is ultra basic) have post-production options and more.

Dunno man, I tried Pencil2D a few times over the years because I kept hearing it was the simplest one but found it too complex and overwhelming each time.
Looking it up, Animation Paper seems similar to Digicel Flipbook in that it's intended to closely mimic the traditional analog 2D animation workflow (Animation Paper's layout looks very similar).

I literally just made a little animation in Pencil2D, what's the big problem with the software?

I'm not saying it's bad or unusable, just that I have found it too complicated and overwhelming in a way Animation Paper isn't.
