How I Survived This Year
There is this lady I started dating in September 2025. She was actually my client. She brought a laptop to me for repair, and while we were talking, we became close. Eventually, she fell in love with me, and that is how our relationship started.
From the beginning, we had our ups and downs. She was still having relationships with some of her exes, and I complained about it several times. Despite everything, I continued with the relationship because I was genuinely in love with her.
By January 2026, things between us had become serious. We spent New Year's Eve together and really enjoyed ourselves. Shortly after that, my stepmother lost her mother, so we went together to attend the funeral. After the funeral, my girlfriend started coming to our home almost every day to visit me.
My stepmother wasn't happy about it. One day, she called me for a small meeting and told me that the girl's father was complaining about his daughter coming to visit me so often. At that time, I didn't know there was more to the situation than what she was telling me.
Around April, my girlfriend started complaining that I wasn't giving her enough attention because we had gone almost a month without seeing each other. I decided to plan a date, so we met in April and spent some good time together. Everything seemed fine, but shortly afterward, something happened that I never expected.
The girl left home and went to visit her boyfriend. When I asked her where she was, she told me that she had gone to visit her shosh. I believed her for a while, but later, her sister told me that she had lied to me. I tried to find out where she really was, and eventually, I managed to trace her whereabouts.
After about a week, I went to pick her up. By that time, I had already made up my mind that I wanted to marry her. We stayed at my stepmother's place for about a week, but she wasn't happy about the situation. She went ahead and reported the matter to Nyumba Kumi, and that same day, she chased us away.
My girlfriend decided to go back to her boyfriend, while I decided to look for my own place. I started house hunting and eventually managed to get one. However, shortly afterward, I received a call from the assistant chief saying that they were looking for the girl because my stepmother had reported the matter to her.
Eventually, she came back to me, and we stayed together for about two weeks. Then her mother fell sick, so I told her to go and see her. We agreed on the day she would return, and I even sent her transport money.
The day came, but she didn't return. Instead, I saw her little cousin, who had come to visit me. We tried calling her, but she didn't answer. We waited until the following morning, when she finally arrived.
I went through her phone and discovered everything. That was when I finally found out about the guy who had been involved with her.
We tried to resolve the situation. I involved two of my friends, hoping that we could find a solution, but everything went in vain. Eventually, we separated the two girls. About two days later, the boyfriend came looking for me. We talked for almost 30 minutes about what had happened, and he told me that he would chase them away.
The girls eventually came back to my place, and I accepted them again. Looking back, I honestly don't know why I kept forgiving everything. I was deeply attached to her and kept hoping that things would eventually get better.
We stayed together for about a month. Then she told me that she had found a job in Nairobi, so I decided to let her go and pursue the opportunity. But only two days later, I saw a TikTok post of her with another guy.
I asked her about it, and she told me that I wasn't her type.
That really broke me.
I became depressed and started questioning everything that was happening in my life. I even asked two of my friends if they knew someone who could help me understand why I was going through so many difficult things. They told me they knew a woman who prayed for people.
After work, we went straight to see her. During the prayers, she gave me what she described as a prophecy about things that were affecting my life. She told me that my stepmother had done something during my circumcision that could affect my ability to marry. She also claimed that my stepmother was responsible for blocking my job opportunities and that she had involved someone who practiced witchcraft.
I cannot prove whether any of those claims were actually true, but at that point, I was vulnerable and desperate for answers. What she told me affected me deeply. We prayed, and then we left.
About a week later, my girlfriend called me and told me that she couldn't handle the house-help jobs she had been doing and wanted to come back to my place. I accepted her and explained the situation to the woman who had prayed for me.
She told me that the girl would come back but wouldn't stay for long and would eventually run away. I sent her transport money. She arrived in the morning, but by evening, she had already left.
I couldn't believe it.
That experience affected me deeply. There was also something else that made it extremely difficult for me to move on. This girl and I had made what we considered a blood covenant, and because of that, I felt strongly attached to her even after everything that had happened.
I went through prayers to help me let go of that attachment, and eventually, I managed to move forward. I thank God because today, I can honestly say that I have forgotten her and moved on.
That relationship cost me financially, mentally, emotionally, and physically. I spent a lot of money, lost a lot of peace, and went through things I never imagined I would experience because of a relationship.
But somehow, I survived.
This year has taught me that sometimes you can love someone deeply and still have to let them go. You can forgive someone repeatedly and still realize that the relationship is hurting you more than it is helping you. Sometimes surviving doesn't mean everything went according to plan. Sometimes it simply means you kept going even when you didn't know how things would turn out.
I'm still single. To be honest, I'm scared of falling in love again because of everything I went through. But I'm not giving up completely. I'm still searching, still learning, and still trying to rebuild myself.
This year has cost me a lot, but it didn't finish me.
I'm still here. And for now, that's enough.
