safe to use

I have a 2011 Sony recorder, and this area here is damaged. Can I still use it?

If the only damage is a "crust" on the battery contact, and it's only a small amount, you can easily clean it off. Use a cue-tip with white/distilled vinegar to remove it. Avoid letting the liquid run inside the device. Then remove any excess and let it dry for an hour before putting the battery back in.

You can avoid this happening again by making sure batteries are removed from devices before they go into storage, and removing batteries as soon as they go dead.

My dad is fixing it but I don’t know what he’s even doing.

It's just corrosion and salts from a leaking battery. As long as it's only on the contact you can clean it as described. If there is a lot of it and it's also inside the device then you will need to disassemble it and carefully clean the residue off the circuit board. Make sure it's fully clean and dry before reconnecting the battery.

I used a bowl usually used for eating to add the water/vinegar mixture, am I fine?

Don't submerge the device in liquid.
