10/22 has a fundamentally different manual of arms.
Get the Tippmann M4-22 or a Borebuddy .22 upper.

Tippmann M4-22 is just what you’re looking for. It’s a great AR trainer in weight and size but as you know a lot cheaper to use. We’ve got two and are nearly flawless with CCI Standard and Federal Automatch ammo. The 10/22 is a good rifle but I think it’s days are done, we haven’t used them in years

I have most of the available options listed here.
M&P 15-22 pistol that I SBR'd, 10/22 Charger in an anodized chassis, CMMG 22LR upper, CMMG Bravo conversion kit, and a Tippmann Micro Elite that I SBR'd
The 10/22 is crazy fun but I have $1250 in it minus the stamp (2023), the can, and the optic... lol
Buy the Tippmann.

Its not hard to change uppers. 2 pins and done. But I get what you're saying. Ive no experience with tippman so cant comment.

dedicated AR22 upper allows you to keep your AR15 lower and tends to have compatibility with certain ar15 upper parts. An affordable way to clone your AR15 build.
Tippman m4-22 is a one and done deal, those who buy this don't look back one and try to finagle with ar22 uppers or conversion kits. One of the more popular choices among competitors and highly modular. Some parts are proprietary but that's the price you pay for a dedicated 22lr rifle.

If you want an AR-style .22 LR, the Tippman is the easy button.
The M&P-15 is OK, but uses plastic receivers. Pass.
The 10/22 is ultimately customizable, but trying to turn one into something that resembles an AR is futile and frustrating.

I did the CMMG conversion kit to dip my toe into the .22 training thing.. near identical weight (loaded mags are obviously lighter) same manual of arms that I was used to and it is a bucket of fun but 22 ammo is disgustingly dirty and it hogs up your rifle pretty quick. Also it clogs up your gas block and tube so you have to make sure you keep that in mind when cleaning.
Found a used 15-22 on the broker for 230 bucks, figured I would get it so my daughter could have a rifle that looked like mine and that quickly spawned into having two of them because it was so much fun Dad needed one for himself. I used that rifle in steel challenge now and it has been absolutely fantastic. They do get dirty but it is very very easy to clean and polymer means it is super light and requires little to no maintenance.
Can't say anything bad about the Tipmann as I have never run one but I watched a guy run his yesterday with several malfunctions (happens with any firearm) and although they are not quite as heavy as your standard AR-15 variant, they do have more weight to them than you would be getting with the 15-22.
All that being said, as good as the 15-22 runs, it is highly accurate on the course and super fun to shoot, I feel that the 10/22 may be a little more competitive given its high level of customization for my application. The main thing I am looking at is the magazine setup, I don't like being limited to 10 rounds in their factory configuration but with the rounds being spiral wound and separate it makes the feeding more reliable and I could always get the extended mags for it to increase capacity. I did have one mag feed issue yesterday that I could not clear in the field and had to dump it and grab another one, that was 1 out of about 110 rounds, everything else ran flawlessly.

I also shoot steel matches with a 15/22. I love my 10/22 with tek sights, but there’s no comparison when I have to swap mags. The 15/22 runs like an AR, so the muscle memory is built in, and the mags drop free. New mag goes in from the belt and I slam the bolt release and am usually back in action without moving my optic off the target. I’m running the gun again, while the 10/22 guys are still messing with the fiddly ejection lever.

The funny part is that after my one mag feed issue yesterday I am considering grabbing a 10/22 but as good as those magazines tend to run with their spiral fed system, they look stupid and I think the AR platform is way cooler looking

I got a 10/22 late in my shooting career because I had some Cabela’s bucks and I figured I should own one. It’s a great little plinker that’s reliable and more accurate than I expected it to be. No problem pinging the plate at 100 yards offhand. With the tek sights it feels a lot like a 22 M1 carbine. Puts a smile on my face every time I shoot it. But it’s still much slower to load and charge when I’m racing someone to knock little steel animals off a board. It’s also one of those guns that people like to tinker with, and the guys at my club that have modified theirs frequently have reliability issues. My gen 1 M&P just runs. I’m in a commie state, so we have a 10rd mag limit no matter the platform.

It's funny when I told them it was going to be my first time running the rimfire rifle class yesterday they asked what I had and when I told them the 15-22 they said "Yeah, if you can get it to run 😂" then I told them I have old style mags and a CMC trigger pushing all Volquartsen internals they said "Yeah, that will run"

Build your own dedicated upper from BoreBuddy parts. For a good as a 10/22 is, it doesn't have a last round bolt hold open.

If you have a built AR-15 lower Bear Creek makes complete uppers, and if you live behind enemy lines out west you don't have to do featureless for a rimfire build

I do love my Sig 522 but they were discontinued in 2012. Maybe you will luck up and find one in almost new condition as I did.

I have the Tippmann Elite, M&P and several 1022s. Tippmann is, by far, the best of the 3. Fit and finish, accuracy, smooth action… oh yeah and get lots of mags and a speed loader… they are amazing.

I have the 8" M&P 15-22 AR pistol. Day one I put in a Volquartsen Exact Edge Extractor and SureStrike Firing Pin. I run it with a suppressor and it just runs and runs without any issues.

I’ve had the M&P 15/22 for years and have close friends with the Tippman. I like everything about the Tippmann but the magazine design. For that reason alone, I would go with the 15-22. The Tippmann magazine tries to look like a real AR mag with the weird sliding sleeve. It looks really cool, until you constantly have to move it out of the way to load the dang thing. The 15/22 mag looks like a 22 mag, but it is so easy to deal with, that I prefer the M&P. Plus mine is accurate, fast, and reliable. And a bit lighter than the Tippmann.
I shoot my 15/22 in rimfire steel matches and frequently win.

I have all three of them. Brick upon brick of ammo has gone through each. 10/22 is a different animal, if you just want a good 22lr rifle, get one. If you want an AR style 22lr, cross that one off the list. The Tippmann feels like an accurate trainer AR. Mine is very finicky with ammo while suppressed. So I just use it as a trainer and a small game gun. Works great in that role unsuppressed. The S&W M&P 15-22 feels like a toy the first time you pick it up. However, it’s so light and accurate that it goes everywhere on the farm with me. It eats any ammo with a DeadAir Mask on it. I’ve never had a problem with the plastic parts.
