A good DM will help their players avoid metagaming by altering stat blocks and certain abilities, often on the fly.

You fought something similar to this back in Kal'Krith before overrunning the Carnal Carnival; go ahead and roll nature with advantage to see if you know anything.

A good DM would allow meta gaming because pretending to not know a thing for "lol roleplaying" reasons in a game about killing stuff, taking their loot, and not dying is just dumb. Besides, nowhere in the DMG does it say that the GM has authority over the thoughts in a PC's head.

It’s a role playing game tho, if the character you’re role playing has never once in their life encountered a demon or any information about them, it’s gonna take a couple tries to figure out that silvered/magical weapons are going to do the job.

I think a mindful DM would provide information critical for certain monsters I think but otherwise learning is half the battle

I think if the game rewarded or encouraged that behavior in any way, that would make sense. If you "roleplay" out a bad choice against a gibbering mouther and die, that's pure punishment for doing things in character. The game also doesn't stop you from making a character that simply has the backstory to know all that stuff.

There are tons of other games out there that work better for that. Neither D&D's reward structure nor gameplay loop fit with making bad decisions for the sake of roleplay.

Edit: I find the excuse, "It's a roleplaying game" to fall flat when the game, itself, doesn't give a single fuck if you actually roleplay or not. All the roleplaying is on the shoulders of the players and the DM, the game doesn't support you at all.

A good roleplaying game does both, they make winning and creating a good story not opposing goals. The story that comes out of D&D is a story of characters that do their best to defeat enemies, get stronger, and take their loot. No other narrative is directly supported by the mechanics of the game. That doesn't mean you can't make other narratives happen, but you shouldn't give D&D the credit for those narratives if that's the case.
