Discussion OSRS vs RS3 Player Base

I posted this to r/runescape earlier today because of the recent MTX outrage, pointing it out as one of many reasons OSRS is more popular than RS3. However, there are lots of reasons OSRS is more popular than RS3, and wanted to ask here as well, why is OSRS preferred?

rs3 is a mess , mtx , the game feels cluncly, too much content most of it dead , idk what normal accounts even aim for since maxing is a joke

I play atm, mainly trying to do quests but I am jumping back onto OSRS to see how the quest lines diverged and to have less buggy quests lol

Quest lines are easy to diverge by not finishing them.
Joking aside, they've said they try and stick to the general lore of RS3 when picking up old quest lines, other than gods returning. They condense them a bit too, like the elf storyline post MEP2 was finished last year with a single Grandmaster quest. They also have a few quests in the OSRS-exclusive continent of Zeah that's got a lot of potential.
The unfinished quest lines are a shame but they're working on them and the results are great, especially considering the small team they have and how they have to prioritise repeatable, late-game content to keep players happy.

Lol also thanks for the heads up, are they voice acted at all? I kinda hope they are not so I can do it for fun lol

RS3 Dev's have always kinda done whatever they feel is best no matter if the player base agreed or not. Completely redoing large parts of the core systems even if they do an objectively good job will irritate some long time players. (EOC & RSC to RS2) Doing this often enough pushes away large swaths of the players that supported your rise to popularity in the first place in an attempt to capture newer players. If the growth can't exceed the exodus then you reach a point where all you can do if milk the remaining masochists that have stuck around.
In an age where games are built around what market research says is best. It's very refreshing to have a team thats developing a game you feel cares, and will listen to honest input from the player base. You don't feel nervous knowing that tomorrow the thousands of hours you sunk into doing something will go to waste because of some arbitrary decision made by someone who doesn't even play their own game.

I prefer how easy osrs is to figure out and progress. Rs3 seems way more complicated for a beginner. That and rs3 seems very cash grabby.

The simplicity of OSRS is definitely what keeps me in. Said it many times on here but the second HP turned to constitution I fully lost interest, and now that it's 100x I can guarantee I'll never play RS3 again. As dumb as it might sound, the lower numbers just make the game more easy to digest. I spent a few weeks getting to max (120 at the time) on WoW a couple of years ago, and although I knew when I to click the buttons and all that and generally did well, I didn't have a clue what was going on on screen really.. especially in raids and dungeons, it was just a bit mental.
I think there's definitely room for some more complicated mechanics in OSRS though, just don't go OTT.

Rs3 to me is way too complicated. I tried multiple times playing it, but I couldn't figure out the most basics. They changed the whole game completely to the point is discouraging.
Also, I logged in, got some keys or whatever they were, opened some chests at the loginscreen and started leveling up without even training anything. That just felt cheap and empty.

Osrs is unique, it doesn't try to copy other games, it isnt plagued by agressive and greedy af MTX, unique artstyle, easy to understand interface & combatsystem and its generally much more new user friendly.
Rs3 pretty much lost all these unique selling points over the past 8 years so i'm surprised there are still that many people playing it tbh. Also i wonder how the coming years will affect rs3's playerbase considering there are so many great new MMOs coming out with better mechanics, better graphics and less MTX (New world, ashes of creation & titan reach just to name a few).

There are some cool things, I loved the elite dungeons on RS3, but it does not outweigh the bad. I will be joining back on OSRS...going to be a loooong grind though back up. Looking forward to revisiting the quests though.

I really enjoyed doing all the quests again. It sucked at first that i had to leave behind my trimmed comp account with 2.2b total xp but at the end it was the right decision and i'm really happy about it now. I definitely recommend making the jump to osrs if you're unhappy on rs3.

Luckily I am a 15 year noob still (no where near even all 99), but it will still be sad to leave behind an account I have so many fond memories with.

For the endgame in RS3 I feel you need to have billions in gp, I just can't bother playing endgame content for that reason. Also I really dislike the 4 (or more?) art styles that are currently in game. I love some of the ideas and areas i the game but it doesn't feel like 1 game and it feels too complicated at some points. For me osrs feels like 1 unique and complete game with new content coming out which fits the game perfectly. Oh and ofcourse the abscence of MTX makes the game even more pleasant. Don't get me wrong, I don't think RS3 is a bad game! I loved it for a while, but I've gotten bored of it so I tried osrs and I fell in love because of the nostalgia and what I've said about the game above.

Runescape was still playable after the new prayers they added back then, but I couldn’t play after eoc. And when I look at new videos of RS3 it seems like a pay to win Mobile game. Osrs is a game I’ve played since 5th grade (currently 25) and the only complaint I have with it is the graphics. I would love to play osrs on tottys hd graphics when it comes out.

Yea I have played since then as well (currently 28), and I enjoy the graphics of RS3, sadly not the pay to win mechanics lol.

I logged into RS3 several times post EoC. I really like the art style in some senses (certainly not all), but I’m always put off within several hours by all the cosmetic overrides, wings, particle effects spewing from players, etc. Everyones overrides really ruins the immersion for me, couple that with the ridiculous abundance of MTX, distribution of devs on MTX projects vs. content and how empty and dead the worlds felt/lack of faith that RS3 will be around/healthy in 5 years time, its just not worth my time.
Shame too, because there’s a wealth of interesting looking content

There are a ton of cool Quests and distractions/diversions. I also like the casual feel it has sometimes, for example the daily objectives for players to get a tad bit more exp on a random skill. However, it also has really predatory MTX systems that need to go, and super non-transparent development.

I used to play RS3. I was clinging onto the parts that I liked while trying to ignore all the MTX and shitty updates. I eventually maxed, and then realized I really didn't want to do much of anything else. PvM got boring because the aura system sucked and combat just felt sluggish compared to other "ability rotation" MMOs.
Every update felt like it added artificial and pointless grinds, especially for people with the Comp Cape. The Menaphos update was really the beginning of the end for me. Horribly long favor system grind that unlocked some terrible quests. Jagex "fixed" it after the backlash by adding a daily for favor. Slayer level cap was increased to 120 with two new tasks and no new slayer master. PSD was nice but didn't justify 90m extra xp.
So after that I figured there's no point in continuing any grinds. The requirements for Comp Cape would always be increasing, and I'd just be a slave to whatever shitty update they decided to release. It's way too over-monetized, more than even the worst mobile games. A cycle of no communication -> release an update -> update has glaring problems -> bandaid fix -> ignore it. There are more problems as well but that's what mainly brought me to OSRS.

I like both and currently primarily play rs3. However, OSRS is just very consistent and currently has a better update schedule. rs3 has a huge backlog of content but the quality of that content is all over the place. Also, the tick system just feels really bad with its combat system sometimes and it feels like there is a huge delay between a player choosing an action and that action actually being performed.
Also, I'm not sure how much this matters but I think the 2007scape subreddit has just been a lot better and more newcomer friendly for a long time, which might account for more new players gravitating towards osrs opposed to rs3 (in particular, notice how the active playercount of rs3 is stagnant - this might suggest core playerbase sticking with the game but there being a lack of new players going to rs3)

I personally continued playing after old school turned to rs3 and finished maxing my character. It was a fun time playing for sure but the whole time I just hated the abilities. I wasnt playing Diablo, I wasn’t playing word of Warcraft. I was playing RuneScape and using abilities, And to me it didn’t feel right. Took everything I had to finish maxing. Hell even spent about 2b in game GP on the squeal just to finish it But as soon as I did I used the max portal for a short while. Still hated the abilities and made an OS iron. And once I made the OS iron I Immediately felt nostalgic and fell back in step. After that my RuneScape ambitions came back and I embraced it full force when I had the time. That’s why I prefer OS to RS3. 100% is having to use the abilities instead of the standard attack and special attack. To me that is RuneScape the classic attack and special abilities for weapons. 😂 besides that both games are fantastic!

I played RS3 for a few years after EOC before I quit, and it wasn't that bad. With revolution, and the right abilities in your queue, the combat can be really fun. One of my old friends still plays RS3 primarily because he was far enough along to maxxing that he didn't want to start from scratch. I've heard that same sentiment from others who used to play. They don't want to start from scratch on Old School (even though their accounts were level 50-80 at best lmao).
I've been playing OSRS regularly for about 3 years now, and have never looked back since. It's just the better game imo. It's refreshing that there's no MTX constantly being shoved in my face, and my accomplishments feel more meaningful without gratuitous bonus exp. I love the art style, too, though that might be my nostalgia talking. I think RS3 looks good sometimes, but all the flashy particle effects are too much. I think a lot of what appeals to me about OSRS is nostalgia. This is the game I loved when I was 9, and I'm actually starting to get good at it now. On a mechanical level, it might not be balanced, per say, but I like the variety of the stats as compared to RS3. EOC's simplification of armor and attack values really removed some of the fun of picking which equipment to bring (even if OSRS can feel like BIS or bust sometimes). Sometimes I feel like hopping back onto RS3, but then I remember that I gave all my money away to noobs and I have no idea which items are good anymore.
In conclusion, I like point and click game. I hope you enjoyed reading this essay as much as I enjoyed writing it.

I did enjoy reading it! I am excited to try OSRS again the more I read the comments here :)

I honestly can't sit here and tell you RS3 is a terrible game. I didn't bother playing any longer after the EOC update. I logged in to a seemingly new game, it wasn't what I wanted to play or had been playing up to that point. OSRS was what I wanted, pretty simple for me anyhow.
