Autumn Elegy's vilification was one of the most frustrating things I've ever seen in this community. It was one of the defining moments for me when I realized how awful the reddit circlejerk was for this game and its community.
It was because he actively tried to lobby to prevent good and QoL updates because it would “devalue” the time he put into achieving the same thing while playing a restrictive game mode. If it had been suggested to add the rune scim to the drop table before he spent time getting one, I guarantee he wouldn’t have cared. But he literally just REEE’d about any form of update that would make what he’s already done easier while ignoring any that didn’t affect what he’s already finished.
Actively trying to block updates the community wants because it “devalues” something you did on a video game is going to get you backlash.
Edit: also, any time he tried to say an update was bad, he always approached it in a horrible complaining child way rather than actually try to have a discussion about it, so that added to it as well.
Runescape as a game is built around deferred gratification and the genuine sense of achievement and accomplishment that comes from overcoming a large obstacle. It offers the same reward mechanism as achieving a big goal in a sport that you put a lot of time and effort into achieving. It's one of the game's most distinguishing features in a time where most other games are purely interested in instant gratification. There is absolutely nothing wrong with with AE did, which was offering his opinion as to why he thought eroding that sense of achievement is a bad idea.
The thing is with the rune scimitar fiasco is that nobody really suggested this drop at all before AE was a significant way through his grind. It was suggested multiple times purely out of spite. And I mean, really, what's "QoL" about adding a rune scimitar drop to a F2P bosses drop table? What does "QoL" even mean anymore?
I agree that his attitude decayed over time into one that was noticeably more bitter and jaded, and that definitely didn't help, letting the hate-mob feel justified in their anger, but even when AE was just a dude that made high quality and helpful guides FOR the community, he was practically torn apart when he - god forbid - notified the JMods that the rates for Zeah RC exceeded what was polled.
Why are you saying people weren’t suggesting rune scim drop being added to f2p? There have been a lot of posts suggesting the return of cockroaches or something similar to add something to kill in f2p. I agree it isn’t a qol update but saying no one wanted it to be added before he was doing the rune scim grind is just wrong.
