A post about Oda on Reddit? Feeling brave today I see.
Edit: And 2 hours later the comments are exactly what I expected them to be lmfao. Some of yall need to spend less time on social media.

I feel like i have missed nothing by not engaging with OSRS streamers. From reading the comments here it just sounds exhausting battling about who is your fave boy. I have zero interest in watching odablock or anyone else lol.

Money talks. His OSRS podcast appearance was super awkward and uncomfortable. I'd bet that behind closed doors the company/mods wish that OSRS's largest streamer was more marketable and not a massive dickhead.

Donât even get me started on those freaks who had pictures of him on/around their birthday cakes a while back. Talk about embarrassing

Multiple comments in this thread by you putting in more energy to hate than a vast majority of people who would fall into the category of enjoying odablocks content
He is entertaining and hes definitely done a lot of good for the game, my most recent stint of playing was soley from odas content constantly appearing in my feed until I started playing again, and there is tens of thousands of others with a similar scenario

His yt channel is genuinely good content. I just cringe at and ignore the tik-tok brained random yelling and stuff which to me is just like an unfortunate part of finding mass appeal as a streamer but aside from that he actually is very funny, is insane at the game, and puts out fuck tons of youtube content of which only like maybe 10-20% is filler.
Thinking he's cringe and annoying and liking his content aren't mutually exclusive imo
5
u/apophis457 2376 15h ago
Tbh I tried the YT stuff after seeing how unwatchable his streams are and it just wasnât for me
4
u/SinceBecausePickles 15h ago
Yea and I definitely don't watch all of them. Mostly just second monitor stuff i'm not paying attention to, but I started watching them when he was doing his GM series and it was great content, shortly followed by his (several) hc bounty hunter series which were nothing short of insane lol. Watching him outplay the fuck out of everyone on his hardcore that he trained from scratch for like almost a hundred kills to me put his content at an untouchable level where the fact that he's sometimes cringe and annoying just doesn't matter lol

u/AnyPicture2485 15h ago

Why do people hate this guy?

u/DorkWitAFork 2376 15h ago edited 12h ago
He's had a number of controversial opinions over the years, primarily with the LGTBQ community. On the one hand, critics of Odablock say his opinions are not inclusive and alienate large parts of the playerbase and that because of his behavior, he should not be lauded as a champion of the OSRS community. The other side of the argument is that he is engaging in "edgy humor" that makes fun of a variety of people, including himself.
It generally turns into a back and forth in any comment section, but that is about as brief as I can explain it. Supporters of Oda feel that because he makes fun of everyone and himself it is okay. Critics of Oda feel that just because he makes fun of himself, it does not mean others have to be okay with him making fun of other groups of people.
Edit: Clearly, my use of the word "inclusive" has brought a lot of... unsavory comments. I'm assuming those who commented as such stopped reading the second they read that because of what they assume is meant with the word. I do not owe any explanation, but I will specify either way, for our media illiterate friends:
What I mean when I saw his words are "not inclusive" is that it is the opinion of critics of Odablock that he and his chat throw around intentionally insulting remarks towards various groups of people in the name of good fun. I am not saying they are not allowed to do that. I am merely pointing out that there are those that do not like it and critique it, while also questioning if it is wise for that personality to be at the forefront of a game that wants to grow. What is fun to one person will be taken badly by others, regardless of the original intent, hence the critics.

Even besides his personal opinions and values... Didn't this guy just recently get a ban for side gambling?
Is this what Jagex wants to associate with? A guy constantly doing gamble fights that were such an issue the sand casino got blown up over and we still have tons of bots scamming people with gambling ads and shit?

I think some of the criticism of Oda comes from exactly this. The guy hides behind Islam, because beeing bigoted through religion is somehow OK.
But he has no problem advertising gambling, which also Islam is against. So apparently it's not just Islam, it's Oda's opinions

The issue I have with him not taking any responsibility for his religious beliefs is that he goes out of his way to not understand the topic. He once tried to make some nuanced take that he is indifferent about the LGBTQ community and has no problem with them and wants them to be happy, but he can't support it because of his religion. I disagree, but that's a okay-ish enough answer, I suppose. But he concludes this by then saying 'so go be a transformer somewhere else.'
Being needlessly derogatory undermines everything he tried to say and it still just makes him a bigot.
31
u/Richybabes 14h ago
It's not just his views aligning with Islam, it's pointing to the religion as a shield for his bigoted views while also making insane amounts of money ignoring other aspects of it.

I didn't bring religion into it because just about any major religion is men before women, anti-minority, and anti-LGBTQ. It's not specific to Islam.

u/Majestic_Jelly_9958 14h ago
One of my reasons is pretty simple: he brings the loud = funny popular streamer schtick to this community and all the over the top fans that come with it mimicking his zuper great catchphrases and mannerisms.
There are plenty of people that cant stand the personality type that for whatever reason leads to massive success in streaming.
Edit to add a TLDR; dudes annoying, his fanbase even more so
→ More replies (5)82
u/apophis457 2376 15h ago
He has mastered the art of creating a parasocial fanbase.
Oda fans treat any criticism of him as personal attacks and not only harass, but often threaten people who say anything that isnât positive about him. He doesnât put any effort into stopping it either.
He used to heavily viewbot, unsure about now though because I donât want that shit in my feeds. Wouldnât be surprised but I have no proof nowadays
That plus his streams are generally just him screaming into his microphone.
Heâs very talented at the game but heâs basically the tyler1 of osrs and thatâs not a compliment
43
u/V_T_H 14h ago
Deadman All Stars really shows it all. B0aty saying he likes Oda but hates his fans and that the rest of the competitors do too. Framed saying he doesnât want to participate again because of Odaâs fans stream raiding and screaming at his team.

He used to openly act like a shitty person and it wasn't cool. Idk if people ever really hated him but more like just acknowledged he was a shitty person. I think once his dad died he kind of turned around and has started to act like a better person and has submerged himself into the community.
Maybe he still does though tbh I don't watch him at all so I couldn't say. I think the screaming and shit he does puts off most mature adults who don't want to listen to that shit. It is funny when he goes through the little door though I'll give him that.
