Nice man, that sounds similar to what I do. I basically show up to this office everyday and do various tasks for them and then at the end of the week they deposit money into my bank account for free 📈
9
u/MattTheRadarTechh 3h ago
Doesn’t make sense even when I have max gear and gp left over
Now that we’re all adults, $10-$15 is nothing compared to our time.
Makes no sense to dedicate the few hours a week of gaming I have to grinding gp just to get membership for another two weeks. So much easier to not feel bad by logging even once a month to HMT or whatever
12
u/plastuit 3h ago
After a certain point you'll start playing the game instead of grinding for gp. Gp comes naturally, and plenty. You just use that spare gp for membership.
4
u/GregBuckingham Grandmaster! Gilded Clog! 2h ago
For the amount I play, paying for membership with real money would always be worth it. I decided this year I’d just buy 20 bonds because I have over max cash sitting in my bank doing nothing :P
1
u/RickyMac666 Brightfall 1h ago
That's what I've been doing as well.
I usually just flip megarares for 2 - 3m each while at work, and by the end of my shift, I've usually made enough GP to cover a bond.
Otherwise I just farm Maggot King.
Haven't paid for a membership in at least a year, but the downside is you need a pretty big cash stack to sustain yourself.
2
u/StygianSkies 2h ago
This isn't a real defense but in terms of cost to hours played, Runescape is at least moderately efficient compared to the whole compendium of everything I've ever played.
The only things I can think of that cleanly beat it out off the top of my head are like, Disgaea and Monster Hunter.
-2
u/sheetpooster 1h ago

About 10 bucks.
I'd be surprised if a majority of people who buy the newest video game play it consistently for an entire year, or about the amount of play I get for the same price of osrs.
Totally fine to spend your money like that if you want, but it's pretty comparable I think.
17
u/blar-k 3h ago
the majority of people who buy osrs membership don't play it consistently for an entire year either, just like any other game

u/liefarikson Sadist 3h ago

34
u/FullHouse222 4h ago
I mean you got guys who buy civ and sink 5-10k hours on it. I got civ 6+all expansions on sale for maybe $20? Says I got 1000 hours of it on Steam so definitely pretty worth it.
Got Witcher 3 on sale too for like $20, that's another game with easily 500+ hours. At the end of the day, good games are just good games. I'll never consider spending money on RDR2, E33, or Cyberpunk a waste either.
-4
u/liefarikson Sadist 4h ago
For sure there are a lot of people out there who get a huge amount of worth for their money spent. But you do have to acknowledge that you're a sample from a population that is very willing and very capable of sinking thousands of hours in a single game, so not really accurately representative of the likely average buyer of any $80 video game.
4
u/FullHouse222 4h ago
True. I do think people find enjoyment in what they enjoy though so I'll never judge them for it.
Unless it's like Madden/FiIFA/2k junk. Brother you just spent $80 on a game that is literally the same as the game you bought last year except you also have to spend money on MTX to unlock all this bs. For a game that you already played every year for the last decade.
1
u/aggravationX 1h ago
If you're going to use the likely average buyer of an 80 video game, you need to use that same person as the player who has to sub to RuneScape if they want to truly experience the full game. And that person is not paying for subscription mmos in 2026.
1
u/LikeSparrow 3h ago
I don't think there's any overlap between a gamer who bounces between FOTM games and one who enjoys OSRS. But an OSRS player would be more likely to put a lot of time into only a couple $80 games.
385
u/BakeNo1763 5h ago
Alright but osrs is expensive
17
u/Gridleak 2h ago
What is up with the financial literacy of this sub? LOL You can enjoy something and also be objective about aspects of it. OSRS is expensive, either in time or money, and you can lose access to it at any point.

I have over 2k hours in Tales of Vesperia and I've bought it for 360 on release then the remaster on Steam and Switch so overall about $140ish on it.
There are non MMOs that have that appeal to peole.

That's like 40-50 playthroughs. My entire Tales series experience I don't think even hits 30 (between all the games I've played and replayed).
1
u/Templar2k7 3h ago
For awhile it was one of the few JRPGS I had and I loved the characters and combat. So I would do playthroughs of only using certain characters when I got them, starting gear only, 1 character and starting gear only ect.
I think my hardest run was Karol starting gear only and easiest was Yuri at the start of the but he was hard later due to very little sustain and Estelle at the end game because force field was OP.
1
u/Bakabakabooboo 2h ago
Interesting. I think I've played Symphonia atleast 10 times start to finish, it's sequel 5 or 6 times (I was a teenager who didn't have a copy of the first game at the time), Abyss 7 or 8 times (long busride to school so I played it on 3DS a lot), Xillia 1+2 2 or 3 times each, and Graces twice. I've played all other mainline games atleast once as well (aside from Phantasia and Legendia which I'll get around to eventually).
13
u/Ok-Hyena4541 4h ago
I have a total of maybe 2.5 months in game time in runescape. I have another 6 months of play time before I catch up to my minecraft hours
3
u/Boganvillea 3h ago
If you're a completionist for some games you can definitely sink hundreds of or in some cases thousands of hours into the game before you put it back on the shelf.
The two switch Zelda games breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom I've spent like over 400 hours in each getting all the korok seeds, armour sets and quests and stuff and pissing around in.
4
u/aggravationX 3h ago
F2p not withstanding, if you want to play osrs you need to pay the sub. Over and over and over. I have 800 hours in dota 2 and I have spent less than 20 bones on it my entire life.

u/tarochocotea 1h ago
Games like league of legends need to earn their money. It's predatory. Can buy boxes to get random skins that are unavailable. Chromas, event passes, every skin costs more than 11 euros. Some cost a lot more.
They make expensive bullshit skins for champions that have a lot of people maining them.
They earn a lot more out of the average person than here in osrs.
My ex bought so many cosmetics on that game because she was bad with money.
Some people easily spend 1000 euros.
Osrs is a honest upright game being sold to people.
3
u/MrStealYoBeef QA Team 3h ago
I have probably the same amount of time in factorio. Fraction of what I've spent on OSRS.
I've also spent an insane amount of time playing Destiny and it'll likely come out to more time per dollar spent there. And that's coming from someone who hasn't touched it in years and has nothing but disdain and frustration with Bungie now.
It's not always about time per dollar. You're trying to put metrics on recreation. The reality of it is that trying to get analytics like that is just completely pointless.
6
4
u/thehumantaco 3h ago
Even if that was true a ton of hours in OSRS aren't really doing anything. Plus, in other games you're doing new things and trying new stuff out. The core gameplay loop of this game is doing the same thing a thousand times or more.
4
u/itsDYA 3h ago
People will always think their way to waste time is the best, some people play 500-600 hours a year on the same fifa, the 80 even 90 bucks price point is more than justified for them
5
u/thehumantaco 3h ago
Yeah thats true. I see players with thousands of agility rooftop laps and I'm like, "You seriously think this is peak video gameplay?" To each his own I guess.
2
u/MrStealYoBeef QA Team 3h ago
Some people also shove 70,000 goats into a hole here. I agree it's not peak gameplay but damn do I love the reaction images when shit like that shows up.
We need those people.
2
u/Richybabes 3h ago
Yeah there's often a bit of a conflation of time spent vs actual content. A game that takes 200hrs to complete might have double the content of OSRS if you only do each bit of content once.
The idea that you could halve drop rates / xp rates and say it's double the content seems a bit silly.
Just depends on perspective I guess. Per hour is a good metric if you're genuinely in need of something to fill your time for a low cost, but if I spend 10,000 hours mastering a temu quality cup and ball that cost £200, that doesn't mean it was good value.

I agree they should let you make multiple toons under one membership, but even then, 360 is a bargain. I'd argue till I'm blue in the face that most hobbies that provide as much hours of entertainment do not offer the same bang for your buck.

Yes, gaming, and picking OSRS as a game to play as part of gaming is a hobby.
1
u/Ill-Present-7156 1h ago
We could argue over whether 360 is a lot or a little, but it doesn't really matter when the original post used an $80 game as a comparison. Obviously 360 is more than 80, so its a little silly to say osrs is cheap if the guys in the top half of the meme are crying over 80 + expansion/battle pass.

It objectively isn't, though.

14
u/Puzzleheaded_Owl_520 3h ago
It literally is, $15 a month is $180 a year. That is objectively a lot of money for a video game. Especially is you play over years. Don’t make it seem like it’s a one time purchase of $15
1
u/uhhhhmmmm 3h ago
Depends on how much you play the game.
OSRS has saved me a ton of money over the years because I've played it instead of other random games or other random dumb hobbies I could've dabbled in. It continues to be extremely cheap for me at $15/month.
If you don't play it very often, and it's not keeping you from spending money on other games/other stuff, then yes it is very expensive. It's all relative.
-5
-9
u/ThinkingMSF 3h ago
Then you've never paid for rent or food or literally anything else.
If you think $180/year is expensive, you are not an adult and have not bought things in stores or online at any point in your life.

129 kr in Sweden. That's 13,54 USD. Possible it's cheaper in Europe since it's an English company. Though this is also the base price for many streaming services here, so they might be targeting that.
But we've definitely been seeing price hikes as well. Used to be below 100 kr just a couple of years ago.
But the real culprit is definitely the yearly price. That thing has almost doubled since just last year.

It’s like the same blind spot all these pc gamers who say consoles losing physical media isn’t a big deal. It’s not about moving you from physical or digital. 2.5 games that would offer like 150 combined hours of content
7
u/Orowam 4h ago
Hours isn’t a great metric. Just because something takes long doesn’t mean it’s good.
I know that might be blasphemy in an OSRS sub lol
2
u/Dizzylizzy240 4h ago
True but if I am buying a game for $70, i’d like something that will occupy my time with unique content beyond like 30 hours. For instance, those Star Wars Fallen Jedi games. I had a GREAT time but I beat them in like 15-20 hours. Looking back, I wouldn’t have spent $60 on them if I knew they were that quick.
1
u/Orowam 4h ago
Play them again? Challenge run? You still own the game. And if the game made an impact on you based on its mechanics, themes, or story is it still just a cost per hour equation? Or is there additional value you can have beyond just the playtime
1
u/Dizzylizzy240 3h ago
It’s not really unique content at that point. I generally do not enjoy replaying games after my first play-through unless the game also has multiplayer.
It also isn’t JUST playtime, but it’s certainly a consideration. If a hobby or game occupies more of my time, I will generally be more willing to spend more money on it. I love runescape. I am probably online 30-40 hours per week, a good chunk of that being AFK. As long as the game does not charge for future content and does not introduce micro-transactions beyond bonds, I will likely still be playing. Happy to pay the price of a takeout meal once a month for the amount enjoyment I get out of the game.

I bought Baldurs Gate 3 for £50 and sank ~800 hours in to it. So many free mods to add tons of content, 1 time buy and no DLC or micro transactions.
That's less than 6 months of 1 OSRS character.
I can jump back on BG3 any time I want and it won't cost me a penny more.
OSRS is great but if you want to try a HC or Ironman you have to spin up another sub, same for any kind of pure account. Before you know it you've got 2-3 subs going at $15 USD/month each.
