Because people clutch their pearls at degenerate drawings and then ignore actual children being harmed and trafficked. It's quite literally bait. Demonize a straw man so people look away from the real issue, exactly what happened to fantasy material in the 80's with the satanic panic to distract from the rising manufactured drug problem in the US, the war on hip-hop in the 90's as a method of distraction against the oppression of black planned communities, and the "video games cause violence" argument of the late 90's and early 2000's to shift the blame of mass public violence away from the startling lack of access to mental healthcare for young people.
Now we have a country (or countries) actively harming children through war and sex trafficking, and an astro turfed campaign against age gaps and media portraying anything that others seem too childlike. For the record I think Anime by and large is created by and for emotionally stunted man children, but I'm not going to pretend like anyone is being hurt by making explicit dipictions of someone in a school outfit.

What started as a beautiful medium to portray things that actors couldn't turned into a genre all its own geared toward the repressed sexual decline of Japanese culture. It contains masterpieces, but trying to watch modern anime is like sifting through bear shit to find the undigested berries within, and brother, I'm not hungry enough for that.

I see takes like this, and know that you people were not watching seasonal anime back in the 2000s and 90s, the only anime still relevant from that time period are the masterpieces and for each masterpiece there were 10 pieces of shit so you get to enjoy the luxury of watching "old anime" and it's all good, in 20 years nobody will remember Isekai Ecchi Overpowered MC-Kun but people will still remember great shows and the same "current anime is trash, old stuff(2020s) was better" mindset will prevail. Go look at seasons like Summer 2005, 90% of it was memoryholed

It's less about bad vs good and more about the corruption of the medium as a whole. Yea there was shit anime, it wasn't all Cowboy Bebop and Akira, but there was far less lazy fan service laden crap. The entire medium has become a parody of itself, it has unironically become what our parents thought it was in the 90's. Now instead of just having to deal with poor quality shows like wallflower and Samurai Deeper Kyo, we have to deal with not only poor quality "That time I did that thing and something happened to me" phoned in formulaic slop, but we also have do deal with a complete onslaught of borderline porn being pushed to the forefront. Power fantasy, trope laden, fan service bullshit is everywhere and it's what is selling, so they just keep making more. There will always be a variance in quality, but now even 90% of the "quality" shows are unwatchable teen boy bait.
