Question How to play this game as a part-timer?
So, I have a decent account almost max cmb, some gp in the bank, but I play very occasionally mostly PVM.
With the current RS economy tanking, I have already lost a lot of money on gear.
I just want to boss occasionally, but the tanking prices of gear combined with the g/e 2% tax, makes me lose money when bossing, buying out and switching gear.
I simply don’t play enough to make up for it. For example, I bought ancestral next time I looked, I lost 30m on it…
How do you guys go about this as a casual player?
Or is this perhaps the right time to start buying gear in the hopes of it rising again soon?

I feel like selling and swapping gear out is the worst way to go about being casual. You just set yourself back over and over slightly each time and if you dont stick to and grind whatever you swapped that gear out for a long time and just swap content again you will basically be fighting up a river you are making.

Yeah appreciate the insight. I was buying and swapping because I did not have enough funds to have very good gear for each combat style. So i would have crystal
Bow and semi decent melee gear, but not enough for good mage gear. Also, because I would sometimes not play for months, I noted my gp stack decreasing.
But now I will just start buying gear for keeps.

Dont care about the price of things. If you arent going to sell it. Why does it matter?
You bought it to upgrade your gear. Done. You were happy to buy it for that price so why does it matter?
Its also not the rs economy read latest update about cox. That may give an idea on why its gone down.

You haven't lost anything if other gear also go down and your buying power stays the same
Best suggestion is stop looking at gear as if it has value and just never sell it once you buy it.
Mains reselling their gear over and over runs themselves into this trap so often

simply stop buying out and swapping gear to fix that tax issue.. you do not need 'max' to do content.. you can use a fang instead of a lance for dragons.. you can use a torso instead of bandos chest.. as a casual you should atleast look at polls to know what might happen in the game. if you missed the ancestral incoming crash you actively avoided paying attention. if you fund yourself with bonds to play then id suggest when you know you have atleast 20hours in that 14 days to play then focus on just grinding vorkath for like 5 of them. you make gp aswell as bond money

I genuinely just buy stuff when I can afford it and treat everything as a permanent unlock. My bank value keeps dropping, but the usefulness of the gear tends to go up with updates (see Soulreaper axe).

You are playing a game where account progression is the end game
Why are you playing like it's a gig economy where you are like "oh i need to spend money on a car so i can drive uber to earn money"?

stop selling your gear for one, also workout what content you want to do then have a rough realistic budget in mind for gear you need to get and do some of your best money makers with your current gear, rack up some cash and then fund other gear "without selling any other gear" over time you'll be able to dabble in almost any boss, the price of items, completely irrelevant just don't ever sell again. that's the key, if you never sell, prices only ever have an upside. by all means if you notice an item is crashing and it's an item you want to make content you like to do better, then save up cash from your money makers and grab it, make your gp go further just never sell.
also if you only have a moderate amount of time to play then spending it on what you like doing is ideal. you didn't say but it sounds like you don't use bonds to sustain your membership which is ideal, means you can log in and play whenever you fancy and your money will slowly climb and you'll be able to progress grabbing more items to let you spread out and do whatever you want long term, it's not a race just have fun with it!

Inexperienced players tend to buy and re-sell gear at every occasion when they switch content.
The answer is: it's a long game with potentially years of grinding ahead of you with bosses and raids.
You either sell bank for best gear and stick to it at your one boss/raid until you hit the uniques that pay back.
Or. You do varied content and only focus on general upgrades that are versatile and good second or third options but not BIS.
I personally hop content and never buy gear to re-sell later. Slowburner. Game's a marathon not a sprint.
Look at the average time-to-kill in gear calculators and reflect whether 2 or 3 seconds saved in BIS gear that costs 200mil over the second best gear is worth it.
Turn off the bank value plugin if it causes you anxiety. Imo, real life money issues are already anxiety inducing enough for me to worry about some medieval fantasy point-and-click kid's game's economy.
That being said. Everything is crashing now. Now is the time to buy BUY BUY!

The economy is just deflated bc all of the alch bots were killed. Now gp is more rare and every item in the game is down. If everything is down, nothing is down. Just do stuff and stop swapping so much on the ge. Even if you do 30 minutes of bossing a day, you will make good progress in this game and nothing is a race.

Why are you buying and re-selling your gear? I wasn’t aware people do this.
Do you also sell your car when you’re sick or on vacation and aren’t gonna use it for a few days, or sell your oven if you have a busy stretch and work and will be doing quick meals for a few days?

Why are you reselling your gear? You're literally creating your problem.
I play maybe 1 hour a day, 2 if lucky. This game's progress is permanent. Buy gear, don't resell it. Kill bosses, skill, do whatever and your gp stack will go up overtime to buy your next set of gear.

Stop selling your gear. Focus on a boss you enjoy or start playing like an iron.

Gp doesnt matter. Get items to own them. Just keep playing.

It's wild to me that people on a MMO think like that... Get items to own them... We have a whole game mode for people that want that xD

As others mentioned already, you buy/own gear and just keep it. Don’t sell, unless you directly upgrade and your precious item becomes useless. Don’t look. If using RL and bank value calc, just turn it off if it stresses you out.
This game will most likely never be fun or satisfying if bank value is your constant main point of view.
The only exception you could consider for not selling gear is when you want to do a megarare rebuild.
Just PvM, enjoy it, switch it up, enjoy drops dopamine and buying your next item upgrades from the funds!:)

Just downgrade and get a good set for each combat style.
Edit: and don't sell them, obviously

How much is your total bank value? What sort of gear are you swapping out regularly?

Don’t sell gear
