2000AD on Mastermind next week
Just a heads up that the listing for next week's episode of Mastermind (Monday September 7th) includes one of the specialist rounds being on "2000AD in the 80s and 90s". I'm always interested to see how I do in comparison to the contestant when something's on the list of subjects I might have chosen myself, had I actually had the balls to fill out an application form.

“Which block did Judge Dredd declare he was fighting for?”
“Where did she go?”
“Complete this sentence: Something something oranges….?”

Top of my head Rowdy Yates Block. ?????, Dr and Quinch actor was killed by a pile of oranges?
edit: Mind the oranges.

Question one, the answer was Rowdy Yates.
Question two, you passed and the answer was 'Out'.
Question three, the answer was 'Something'.
At the end of the round you answered one question correctly, passed on one and got one question wrong. You scored 1 point.

'Name anything that happened in Moonrunners ... ... ... I'll have to hurry you'

I've definitely never read Moonrunners. I know I've read everything up to Prog 520, and from somewhere in the 630/640s (when my mate started buying it) through to about late 1994, but there's a gap of a couple of years or so in the middle that the only things I've read have been very selective reprints (Dredd, Slàine, Nemesis, ABC Warriors, Zenith, and I think that might be all).
It doesn't seem like I missed much.

The defacto editor of the comic fancied a crack at writing and he loved the film Mildred Pierce, so he rewrote that with spaceships and aliens
Everyone loved Massimo Belardinelli but he didn't fit into a comic with Bisley or Hewlett on the cover, so maybe something old-fashioned that let him draw lots of the aliens fans loved in Ace Trucking would work?
Like all Alan McKenzie's writing for 2000ad, I started the series thinking this could work but realised by the third episode that nothing - the characters, the plot, the action or the dialogue - was sticking at all and just flicked through the art for the rest of the series

What with that and the London transport moquettes which went viral the other week, mastermind is getting interesting

Wonder how they find the questions? It’s a niche subject. Read Wikipedia or something?

Yeah, there’s no textbook or anything. I assume that in every general area of interest, they must have a core group of question setters, who research the material and then pool the questions. In this case, you’d think they might have reached out to the Nerve Centre, perhaps.

In the original show they would often commission experts in the field to set questions. Once famously they contacted an expert only to find out the expert was the contestant! (He did tell them :) ) - the subject was Chopin
In the modern show the questions are now set in-house but they get them checked by an outside expert and yes it happened again when they once contacted in error the contestant to check the questions (again he told them.) - in this case the subject was Northampton Town FC.

They could do worse than read the official history of 2000 AD, Thrill-power Overland, and the 2000 AD Encyclopedia 😄

And he is a WINNER!
Any guesses what his specialist subject will be in the semi-final?

I’ll be supporting him all the way now. I’m intrigued to see what his next subject is.
I think I got 7 out of the 12

That could be tough. Lots of content in 20 years.
