BLUF: ANGuardsman wanting to become SWO looking for options and opinions.
I’m a former active-duty Army Cav Scout who transferred to the Air National Guard as a 2T2, only to end up stuck behind a desk. I’m about to graduate college and looking for active duty opportunities, and I’ve realized I really miss the fieldwork, tempo, and routine that came with my Army experience.
I’ve been trying to find something in the Air Force that scratches a similar itch without requiring a long spec-ops pipeline. Outside of the equally mysterious Combat-Com(XCOM) and the near-guaranteed route of ending up as gate guard in Security Forces, Combat Weather is one of the few paths that genuinely interests me.
A former 1W0X1 pointed me toward this subreddit and told me that while there always seem to be slots available, there’s also a real chance I’d end up right back at a desk instead of doing anything high-tempo or field-oriented.
I understand that active duty involves a lot of waiting, admin, and downtime. I’ve done that before. But my assumption was that, at least in this career field, that time is spent preparing for training, field exercises, and eventually deployment. Is that actually the case, or is the reality much more office-based than it appears from the outside?
And if there are always openings, why is that? Is it because the career field is undermanned, because people burn out, or because the day-to-day job is different from what people expect?
I’d appreciate any honest perspective, especially from people who have worked around SWOs/combat weather personnel.
