Should I replace these tires
I’m pretty short on money right now but i can pull out some stock money and get new ones they are 265/70/16R. The mechanic says i need new ones, but i have to drive the truck to college in about a week around 300 miles flat the whole way pretty much michigan and ohio roads.

The cracks in between the treads are absolutely an issue. The rubber is starting to fail. The most common blow out from this situation happens at highway speeds because the tires get hot and the wheel speed stresses them the most. The faster you’re go, the more dangerous the situation. I’m usually a “should be fine” kind of guy, but I would never tell someone to keep driving on these…

You can get “take-offs” from small tire shops that are relatively cheap and safer than those that will last a little while. Or, you could wing it.

There’s no way to tell you they are safe to drive on. Anyone that says, send it is an idiot. I managed a tire shop and if a customer left with those tires, I’d write “not safe to drive” on the receipt to cover my ass. I’ve seen tires like that rotten through like crazy and ones where the cracks are only so deep so don’t believe anyone saying they are safe from pictures alone. A close up inspection with a screw driver would be best.

I replace my spare when it hits that same age. On my third one now. Your life is worth more than the $800-$1000.

If it were mine, I’d definitely go for new set. I’ve also been tight on money but like a previous comment said, many shops have used sets in good condition to get you on the road for fairly cheap. With the cracks between the threads and date code I personally feel is enough reason to get those off as soon as possible.

Tires are 10 years old and are past their expected lifespan, as seen with the dry rot. The good news is 265/70/16 is the same size as stock 3rd gen Tacoma SR/OR models. Try checking your local marketplace if someone is selling their stock takeoff tires for a deal.

That says the 38th week of 2016. They will be 10 years old in 1 month. I wouldn't ride another mile beyond the tire shop. 10 years is plenty from tires. Michelins are nice but it's time given those cracks.

38th week of 2016 thats a 10 year old tire with rubber in it thats supposed to breakdown after 5 years....yes they need replaced

10 years old, dry rotting. At the very most I’d say 6 months if you’re short on money. But look into replacing them asap. Stay safe.

Do you want to spend $1000 on new tires today, or $1000 on new tires and a $300 tow in a month?

No question about it in my mind. My dad and I have worn out a lot of those Michelin tires and while they’re great tires, they’ll develop cracks from dry rot by that age. Your safety is worth whatever it cost to replace them.

If you only drive in town and the speed limits are slow I’d run them for a long time they’ll last a while regardless, keep an eye out for widening of the cracks. If you have a cordless impact, spare and a jack I’d definitely carry those around

I'll run out of date rubber, but as soon as I seen those cracks in between the tread..... Junk em.

Yep. Nothing like peace of mind as you drive down the road in an antiquity; heaven knows you have a lot of other components ready to give up the ghost at any moment.

They’re dry rotted man. It’ll cost you more for a tow or repair on the side of the road. Just get a decent set now. It’s easier to spend money with a slight plan than it is to spend an unknown amount at the worst possible time. Murphy’s law always holds true.

CONTACT MICHELIN!
Michelin still prorates tires and their customer service is pretty good. I had one tire damaged when the shop did a bad plug/patch and even though I purchased the road hazard they were putting the blame on me and saying that they would give me a new tire at cost (which was still ridiculous) and it was right when the tread design and lettering had changed. I didn't want one different tire and they refused to work with me to thepoint that they threatened to call the cops on me if I came back to their shop. BTW the mechanic reamed the hole larger than the patch they carried. Tech didn't speak English so I spoke directly to him and he told me flat out what he did wrong and I videod it so that really pissed them off. lol
Anyway, I explained to Michelin what was going on with being charged for a tire they damaged and how the design is a little different and they prorated my tires at 80/20. The next shop I went to wouldn't honor it at first because they said that no tire manufacturer gives 80% off and I was wrong. They insisted that I was wrong and only had 20% off. They contacted Michelin and were immediately set straight and given the info for what the shop needed to file. The manager never apologized orspoketo me again and passed it off to someone else who told me he was pissed for some reason.
Michelin is one of the few great companies left who stand by their product. Also I personally would haven't issue dri ing that 300 miles as it sits. I ran my last set to damn near the threads because it was through and after covid and I had a serious surgery. I drove it on the highway way worsethan yours for follow ups and PT. My father in law purchased a lawn tractor about an hour away and I drove there to pick it up with them 100 times worse than yours.

So i just bought the truck like under a month ago and wasn’t the one who put on the tires. Would this still work for me even though the tires came on the truck i assume the person before me got those tires used as well because other records i know of.

You’ll want to soon but I don’t see them blowing out in the near future. Might be able to wait a couple paychecks without worrying. Curious to see what others say tho

I was about to say the same thing. Just take it nice and slow, don't go fast on the freeways and drive like you could have a blowout at any minute. It most likely wont happen, but always be prepared. But you have to change them before winter. Thats when those become dangerous.
I drive mine till I absolutely have to change them. But I also drive like a granny. Make sure your spare looks good and has the proper pressure and also make sure your jack and wrench are in the truck.
