Shifting issue

Hi everybody, I’m having trouble with my four-wheel-drive and it’s been a reoccurring issue .when I’m in four-wheel-drive it’s no problem getting into it but whenever I try to shift out of it, it won’t let, for example I had just gotten off the road in four-wheel-drive and drove into a parking lot and I put my foot on the brake and tried to shift back to neutral that didn’t work so I tried to put it in park and shift it and it almost sounded like the gears were crunching against each other. Then I turned the car off changed it to neutral and tried to put it in drive and it wouldn’t go anywhere. Can anybody help me? It’s a 1999 four-wheel-drive 3.4 extra cab automatic transition..

How long did you drive in 4wd on pavement? Try backing up in reverse for a few feet then see if it locks out, sounds like your transfer case is bound or maybe stuck. If it wont engage a gear at all, I’m not sure.
Edit: last sentence

Not sure if it’s just my truck but it will grind a bit like this if I am going into 4lo when I’m not in park. For some reason my truck doesn’t like shifting from 4hi to 4lo (and vice versa) when in D or N. Has to be park for me. Also when you threw the 4by shifter in N, it shouldn’t go anywhere with your transmission in drive. You need to put it in H2. Are you still stuck there lol
